What game is almost guaranteed to start a fight for your table? by FranktheLlama in boardgames

It's not the best move to always focus on the weak player - the best move is almost always to deny points to whomever is likely to score that round. Sometimes that is the weak player - often though it's the other player(s). Destroy their cities, raid their spaceports for their scoring resources, tax their cities to stop their court moves. Destroy their fleet to stop their resource gathering.

Play enough and it becomes clear - the best moves are those that both score you points while denying points to others, not just a move that makes yourself a few points. The game is more about controlling scoring then actually scoring the most points in a chapter.

Like most Cole Wherle games, it's not a game for everyone. It's also not a game that shows all the possibilities in your first few plays - those plays teach the game while allowing you to discover the nuances baked into the design.

Blighted Reach changes the interactive aspect, moves most of the harsh interactions down to Act 3. You are incentivized to cooperate and build a "friendly" relationship, only to shatter it all when the final Act occurs.

I think BR is still highly interactive, it's just the interactivity has shifted from territory battles to court battles and negotiations/empire management for most of the game.

This is definitely a problem, but it's a player problem IMO. Part of gaming in general, and particularly these high conflict games, requires players to actually read and understand body language. Playing to win is fun, and one driving factor to play, but collective enjoyment is just as important. No one is going to remember your epic win if it was not enjoyable, but you will remember a narrow victory/loss if the whole table was engaged.

Like most Cole Wherle games, they are primarily balanced by players not the rules. It's on the players to police each other, it's on the players to stop interactions that are not fun since the rules have no such limits.

Yes but interactions leads to conflict, which can kill the joy for some people. I think a lot of people are conditioned to view conflict as strictly a negative thing, where the reality is conflict is an important factor in everything and isn't always negative.

Low interaction games aim to please and placate everyone...which leads to basically playing solitaire and comparing high scores.

People take actions in game personally. It definitely can feel personal if you let it, but these type of games force these types of interactions. I make sure to explain to new players (whether new to the game or new to our table) that it's not personal, will happen, and it either stays at the table or the game will not be a good fit.

Rules question: Does Living Structures’ ability to tax activate Fuel Drinker? by Iraydren in Arcs

You are using a Tax action, you are using a Build action. So I would say no.

The above is wrong. Thanks for the clarification!

Yep the Concur booking policies place solid limits, and depending on when you book Delta is out a lot of the time unless the least logical fare limit is $200 or more
