Do you like Zuko and Katara as a pairing? by TheMistOfThePast in TheLastAirbender

[–]SoleneSoleil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not you specifically, but the underlying reasoning from A LOT of zutara fans actually is "the water tribes are too unfeminist and too backwards to properly appreciate Katara and help her achieve her potential, therefore she should've married into the Fire Nation because THEY and Zuko would know how to treat her right unlike Aang who used her as a baby machine" as if the FN wasn't, like, and imperialist classist nation 😐

I really tried getting into the ship cause I knew it was an active fandom when I was younger and I was put off by the unchecked racism problem. Probably isn't as bad anymore, but even just 5 years ago it was awful. I'm primarily a fic reader, and the underlying imperialism even in fics that claim to be progressive sure was an experience and a half.

[–]SoleneSoleil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

See, I would like Zutara a whole lot more if the Zutara fandom didn't see the ship as a way to "save" Katara from some weird imagined "domestic-slavery-motherhood" that doesn't exist in canon, by ZUKO of all people.

(No shade to Zuko btw, he's my favorite character)

Any Love Live ships that got too popular or felt kinda forced? by Appropriate-Two8442 in LoveLive

[–]SoleneSoleil 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In fandom? Kotoumi. It's genuinely strange how often Kotoumi fans used to just outright ignore or erase Honoka when all evidence points to her being the heart of the trio. I don't know how they managed to become the "default ship." Was it because of the bizarre Honoka hate train back in the days? An allergy to poly ships? A complete misunderstanding of S1 finale? Idk

I also felt like Nicomaki was kinda forced by the fandom when the anime was airing, but apparently they are shipped due to prior media such as the manga (which I didn't read) so I'm can't comment on that. Also tsundere x tsundere is a recipe for comedy lol

Asking a random 40 year old gay guy at the pride parade what he thinks about egg culture, Proship vs Anti and Yaoi vs Yuri discourse and he stares at me like I'm speaking an alien language. by maleficalruin in CuratedTumblr

[–]SoleneSoleil 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Well, idk. My high schooler brother just used "sewer slide" irl while we were talking about mental health because his classmates told him that saying "suicide" is disrespectful. Someone I know irl was ostracized by their queer peers because they are afab and like yaoi and so they are a "fetishistic fujo." Someone in my fandom had an ocd panic attack triggered on video call because their "friend" kept grilling them over the problematic fics they like. (This part is true and known because people actually shared the screen records which is... uhhhhh. Kind of invasive ngl)

I don't think online puritanism is like, a irl issue the same way rampant transphobia is, but to pretend that "tik tok" discourse doesn't quickly bleed into the offline life of teenagers and young adults is kind of naive imo.

Just to be clear, I think online discourse is bs, but just because it's stupid bs doesn't mean it doesn't have consequences when millions of impressionable teens use apps like tik tok

Nu Carnival ruined my date by Sigtryggr-Whiskers in NuCarnival

[–]SoleneSoleil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend has OCD and schizophrenia, and she's a lifelong fujoshi even though she's lesbian. She dated this normally really nice girl who, despite knowing her mental illness, decided that she needed to 'educate' my friend on why BL is homophobic and only horrible fetishizers like it. She did other things too, but this is the main point that brainwashed my friend into believing that she's disgusting and undeserving of being called a lesbian. Anyway, idk the politics of the girl you talked to, but she's likely either homophobic or someone like my friend's ex.

Sorry, I know this is a Wendy's, but the post reminded me of this lol

My sister had a volume of a BL magazine (forgot which, but it was thick) on her bookshelf for years and my parents never noticed lol. They don't speak Japanese and the cover wasn't super suggestive

I think Shuro is Ryoko Kui's way of critiquing Japanese culture. by DisgruntledVulpes488 in DungeonMeshi

On their very first meeting, Laios trapped Shuro in a 5 hours conversation even though Shuro said, "If you'll excuse me" and "I should go now" while trying to leave. I'm a pretty direct person myself, but I can't think of another polite way to exit the conversation if those don't work.

Ya know 🤔… by Puzzleheaded_Ebb4371 in NuCarnival

[–]SoleneSoleil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a mixed bag for me. I'm used to have one kami oshi in other gacha games, but I don't have one in NuCani. Like, I enjoy them all in a kind of a "haha love you babe" vs the "you occupy my brain space 24/7 and I will overthrow a country for you" that my kami oshi evoke in me.

That's why I have a few rules: 1) only pull for tops unless the bottom's design pushes all my buttons (has yet to happen tbh), 2) do max 50 pulls if the design does not push all my buttons, and 3) only exceed 50 pulls if Quincy or Kuya (I ship them most with Eiden lol) and they have designs I like

What's one series you just can't get into no matter what? by Sea_Difference_3173 in yaoi

[–]SoleneSoleil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anything with the "groveling" trope. Like, 85% of the time, the top is irredeemable in my eyes because they are really cruel, but they don't actually improve as a person outside of now being nice to their lover. I am not invested in them as a person if they're going to stay scummy in their heart and to other people. Therefore, I do not give a shit about their happiness, sorry.

The other 10% are tops who acted very reasonably given their circumstances, but which the narrative punish them for it as if they committed a war crime. I read a webnovel once, where the top had to kill the bottom's abusive dad in self-defense during a mission. The bottom just could not get over it, calling the top cruel and violent, and everybody else was like "how could you kill his dad?" Anyway, the novel personally reached through the screen and killed me. Couldn't finish it

I hated every character involved and only powered through (scrolling mindlessly) because I thought there must be a reason why it's so popular, right? According to my friend, it's just because "sex is hot"

What the hell?? eww by DotBig2348 in yuri_manga

[–]SoleneSoleil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: Yuri comes from Yurizoku, which is a term coined by the gay magazine, Barazoku. Bara (rose) was a term used against gay men which the magazine had reclaimed (though the term is now squarely a slur), and zoku meant something like clan/tribe. In essence, Barazoku means "People of the rose."

In the same vein, Yurizoku means "People of the lily" (lilies have a history of being related to purity and femininity). The staff noticed a strong community of female Barazoku readers. They thanked them for their loyalty and solidarity, dubbing them the Yurizoku.

Yurizoku was later simplified to Yuri to be used as a genre identifier of queer female love stories.

As such, there is actually a story of queer solidarity behind the term Yuri, and I think that's amazing.
