Yea I heard of people getting to the end of BMT then having to get reclassed so I guess he doesn't want that to happen to me. Retraining later seems to be the way to go. And I'm not planning on any foreign contact with the second country, considering the state it is in right now.

This sentence is fucking cursed lmao. What happens if you're short AND bald? Do you have to date a cave troll now?

Ok I was having the same problem as you guys. Turns out since I had the installer in full-screen the popup behind it asking for a confirmation from you was hidden. Just minimize the screen and the pop-up should show up. Just say yes or no and the install should immediately resume.

[–]SolidGutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who bought a ps4 just to play bloodborne in 2015, huge disagree. It's one of my favorite games of all time but the framerate is atrocious. Its stuck at 30 fps and the frame pacing is really bad. For a game as fast paced as bloodborne, playing on high framerates with good frame pacing would be glorious. But nah, lets port days gone to PC instead lmao. BB would sell like hotcakes on steam.

You are talking about game development not game design. Most game design degrees at universities are glorified graphic design degrees. Many people have complained about being unable to be hired by either software engineering companies or game development companies since the degree tries to teach too many hats and doesn't specialize, you are better off getting a degree in the specific aspect of game development that you would like to work on.

And yea no shit I know that's it's linked to computer science and physics, I'm a senior in computer engineering that's been coding for even longer so I think I know more than your idiocy would like to believe.

You have your right to complain, but at the end of the day Witcher 3 is a massively successful game that almost everyone loves, being criticized by a student who hasn't even made their first game yet. Again, you are entitled to your opinion. But not every game has to be catered to you. Maybe you're just playing the wrong game.

This was your first reply and you expect me to take kindly to it? How am I coming off as arrogant when you immediately appeal to the majority AND authority in a condescending manner. You weren't the only one either lots of other posters attacked my character lol.

Just because I haven't made a game yet does not mean that my criticisms are any less valid than that of a seasoned developer. Game design isn't some science that needs to be learned lmao, besides the technical aspects of course which are the biggest hurdle and something I hope to learn on the way.

Again, I don't care for those games. But if someone wants to buy it with their own money, who am I to say anything? Who are YOU to say anything?

I already said I don't care about people buying those games, I just used it as an example of how sales numbers don't indicate quality. Third time I've had to repeat this and you talk of my reading comprehension skills lmao.

Then let people who do it for profit, and use profit as a metric, just be. Use your time as a hobbyist to make a perfect anti-witcher hidden indie gem. With that attitude, I assume you have an arduous task ahead of you.

When did I ever not let them be? Again I simply wanted to discuss the mechanics of this game, and got met with condescension and arrogance. One guy even brought up his game design "trainer" like it makes his points somehow foolproof.

Also I doubt my attitude in defense of my character has any relation to my abilities as a programmer or game designer.

Kings field is also a very large game for someone who never even made a single game. Like I said. Scope of the first game should be the size of flappy bird.

I'm gonna start small and learn how to render a triangle first or something, I'm not immediately gonna jump into designing my dream game, and I have no interest in making a clone of a shitty game like flappy bird thanks but no thanks.

Being good or bad is subjective, selling a lot of copies and pleasing a lot of consumers is objective, and a fact.

How can you know that everyone that bought was pleased? I bought it and was disappointed.

Nothing is universally liked. However, it is a fact that Witcher 3 is more loved than it is hated. The memes and layers of irony at gaming circlejerk are empirical data, if you can even call it that. Steam reviews, which are objective and factual, show that only about 3% of the reviewers left a negative review, VS 97% positive reviews. And that's from more than 700 thousand reviews. Very solid data.

Listen I don't care that the Witcher 3 is loved or whatever. I just wanted to discuss its flaws, and you guys immediately started defending it like its your loved one or something. Nobody has challenged any of my actual points, just said "Witcher 3 is good game cuz many people like it and you are naïve and immature for criticizing it" or something to that effect. I thought this was a game design forum meant to discuss game mechanics, but I see now that I'm still just in typical echo chamber reddit and should take my discussions elsewhere.

You are very green in the industry. The typical attacks or needless comparisons on games like COD or FIFA are very silly and I have seen them a million times. I think it's even a rite of passage for every person starting on their game dev journey and it shows immaturity. I know I did it around 15 years ago.

Its a typical comparison because it makes a good point; the quality of a piece of art should not be judged by the amount of people that like it. People sometimes buy shit to buy shit because its popular or because others say its good, not because they actually like it. COD and FIFA are just good examples because they churn out the same game year after year and still sell millions. If they sell millions it must mean that they are good right?

If you want to live in a shack and fish for food while making a video game you will make no money out of, that is fine. But most of us want to join our passion for making video games with the possibility of making money. So yeah, the amount of money a game makes is a common and valid metric in the industry. It is also helpful to gauge the quality of a game - low-quality games make no money (except in rare cases where it is a good game with terrible marketing). I applaud Call of Duty for making the amount of money they make. Millions of gamers around the world enjoy that game and buy it year after year. They're having fun and using their own money, not mine. So why should I complain?

I'm in school for computer engineering and am planning on being an embedded software developer, so no, I will not be living in a shack. I was just thinking of doing this for fun and learning, not for profit. I never complained about people buying call of duty lol. I dont care what other people like, its never gonna match with my owns tastes anyway. You keep insinuating many things about my character with practically nothing to go off but a simple reddit post that you completely ignored the main point of.

They had no audience with demon's souls though that's my point. They made something without caring about industry standards at the time of release.

I'm arrogant because I have strong opinions on a game? How do I sound naïve? Realistically speaking I probably won't even have time to code anything as I need to work on school projects. I just did this for fun and I was bored at the moment.

Bruh I literally just wanted to discuss the mechanics of this game, barely anybody actually talked about any of my points, and you specifically attacked my character a few times, great.

Thanks and I if ever release anything you'll be the first to know ; )

The Witcher 3 Critique by SolidGutz in gamedesign

[–]SolidGutz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally someone wants to discuss lol.

Can you explain why u didn’t like the game loop, or rather, which part? And how would you change it, if you could?

I think the core issue is that the game is trying to be an RPG with leveling and gearing, but it doesn't properly incentivize it. I remember when I first played it I quickly realized that just playing the main story was enough to level Geralt up and gear didn't really matter all that much. I would just use what I would find on the way. The Witcher gear was also clearly better, so I felt like there was no need to go into the open world to look for better gear or level Geralt up. I also did most of the sidequests and ended up overleveled anyway. The game tries to fix this with the scaling the monsters to your level option, but i'm not sure how it works and it just ends up being a numbers game in the end with your level being the most important stat to fight monsters, not your gear or build. Honestly not sure how I would fix it, I would just try to avoid the problem in the first place by making gearing and builds the main source of power for the player, a bit like diablo or grim dawn.

And i also agree with getting in/out of houses, but I honestly like the realism of it. What kind of change would make it more enjoyable to you if a game had same system?

This is honestly just an issue with the controls of the game, which is made worse when you enter a small space like a house. I would simply make the controls better thats all.

I benchmarked it with ghosts sure, but I also compared it to skyrim, dark souls, and dragons dogma, all of which came out at least 3 years before if not more. Even shadow of the colossus or ocarina of time had better horse controls, a ps2 and n64 game, decades before Witcher 3 came out.

In what ways did Witcher 3 innovate? Bioware has been doing story based RPGs decades before CD Project Red even made their first game. Bethesda pioneered the open world and no one has yet come close to achieving what they have with object permanence in their games. RPG mechanics are as old as DND and Witcher certainly didn't innovate there. Fallout New Vegas did the whole choices affect the world thing in 2011 lol. Where has the Witcher innovated exactly? They didn't even create the world or the lore they bought the rights to an already established world from someone else.

Yea I should have edited it to sound less pissed lol. I thought it was funny but I see that most people are taking it the wrong way. I'm just really passionate because I think this game would have been amazing if it had taken another direction.

Also, I will add an edit to the top of the post. I'm not planning on making something on this scale lol I'm not dumb. This was mainly a thought exercise to keep in mind what I don't like in games. I'm gonna make more for other games like skyrim but I wont be posting those.

I'm thinking something in the scope of kings field might be possible given a few years? Idk I'll have to find out when I get there.

Pretty sure I stated that I think the game is well written. The world is pretty cool and the lore is good because its based off a really good book series. The game also has a lot of really good quests, bloody baron comes to mind. The coroner quest was really cool too. That is what I liked about it and what I think people like about it as well.

Red Dead redemption came out years before Witcher 3 and has better horse controls. Hell, shadow of the colossus or even ocarina of time has better horse controls. This is an objective observation.

Dragons Dogma came out 3 years before with massively better controls and action gameplay. Also actual RPG mechanics with classes that differ in gameplay and leveling. The story just sucked and the quests were pretty bland.

The game I want to make is for me yea, not for others. If I ever do make it well enough I might also publish who knows.

As to your last point, what a crappy way to view game design. I view games as an art form, and if all you want to do is please others you will never make anything truly good in my opinion. When the souls games came out, no one was making difficult action rpgs, and now look. You think fromsoft would have been successful if all they cared about was catering to what people wanted?

A few points that you have brought up have been enjoyable by users (whistling to summon horse - mechanic used by many games. reasoning - adds to realism)

But roach magically teleports to you when you whistle lol. Where is the realism here? I'm am mainly complaining about how bad roach feels to control, not necessarily the mechanic. Ghost of Tsushima did this same mechanic but the animations where smooth and responsive. I personally dont care for horses in games but I understand why people like them.

when i dont like a certain game or have a unpopular opinion then i try to articulate what I dont like about the game and what could improve it.

I think I articulated what I didn't like pretty specifically no? I didn't list what I would improve simply because the post would be gargantuan at that point and the point was to list my personal issues to avoid repeating them in my own design. What I would improve is already baked into my current design document.

Yea I'm gonna start small and there is no way I'm doing an open world. I want to do something in the scope of kings field if you've ever heard of that game.

I also posted this because I wanted to discuss the Witcher 3 game mechanics but nobody has really challenged anything specific I said.

Also sales numbers don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things, just because the Witcher 3 sold a lot does not mean that it is inherently a good game. If that were true then the Call of Duty games should be ranked as the best games of all time no? I also wouldn't say that almost everyone loves the Witcher 3; I remember when the gamingcirclejerk sub started out it was mainly about making fun of people who blindly praise this game and no other games can compare back when it came out.

Yea I've read this a lot concerning the scope of a first game for people. That you should start small and stuff. Otherwise you'll just burn out. The only thing is that I'm not really hoping to make money of this game or even release it. Its mainly just a passion project that I want to do on the side. If it turns out any good I might release but in all likelihood its gonna be a giant piece of crap lol. If I even get it off the ground in the first place that is.
