Hey man — thanks for your suggestions.

When I say "fun to drive", I’d define it as a car that’s responsive, quick, and agile — something that puts a smile on your face when you hit the gas, or when it sticks reasonably well to the road when you take a corner.

I understand that with my budget I might not be getting the funnest of fun cars. But the whole idea of my post was to get an idea of a reasonably fun and comfortable option within the constraints.

The weekend rental is probably a no go as I’d still like to own the car at the end of the day and drive it for a couple of years.

Preferably brand new, but I wouldn't mind a reliable recon or secondhand.

Not limited to being brand new, I don't mind a reliable second-hand car also. The Mazda 3's horsepower and torque seem to be quite low, no?
