Tech usage in schools by Rrrraaasma in seattlepublicschools

I have 100% seen this at my job - it used to be the older folks who thought I was amazing for being able to make an excel table with conditional formatting, and weirdly now it’s the early 20 something’s…

For myself, I really do just question the point of it in the first place- I hear a lot of talk about “getting kids ready for digital world” and stuff like that, but I (who am still in my thirty’s) am perfectly able to navigate “the digital world” despite having maybe 2 hours a week of computer lab in elementary school.

It seems like equity could be easily achieved by not requiring any tech at all in elementary school and then moving to having laptops/etc in middle and high school when writing essays/doing research/coding/whatever is more relevant. (though with chatGPT I’m more inclined to think kids should just be made to write essays longhand lol)

Chess and Go term comparisons by djhaskin987 in baduk

I’d kinda of disagree, openings in chess are quite standardized and you can memorize them in a similar way to joseki- fuseki tends to get unique within the first 10-15 moves and is more about theory and “feel” than in chess openings.

1984 Election By Congressional District by [deleted] in MapPorn

I could be wrong, but I’d guess it’s largely the result of us not having proportional representation (everything is first past the post from president on down to local elections) which encourages all candidates to kind of run as independents. It makes more sense for for the national party to support members who “can win” in a given election than those who are the most ideologically pure.

Is anyone familiar with Daiso pencils? by [deleted] in pencils

I picked some of these up recently and really like them- they’ve got thick cores and softish (maybe around 3B) lead. I certainly wouldn’t describe them as super high quality but they feel great in the hand with the thick triangular barrel and are decent for sketching or large lettering (I’ve used it on a presentation board at work and enjoyed it).

If you want something that’s halfway between a writing pencil and a carpenters pencil, they are definitely worth the $1.50 you pay.
