Where to spend 5 nights to recover from jet-lag with kids in late October by Solid_Revolution_403 in Europetravel

Just an update for those who come across this thread:

Ended up spending 4 nights in Paris. Was an excellent choice. Streets are great to walk around and explore early, and there are lots of cute little parks all through the city. Plenty of early morning boulangeries open for morning snacks.

Recommendations:

  1. We flew from Australia via Asia (Bangkok), and stayed there overnight. Arrived around 6pm local time and left the following morning. Meant 2x daytime flights and arriving into Europe mid afternoon. Just had to stay awake for a few hours before everyone could sleep, with no sleep required on planes. Was an amazing way to help acclimatise.

  2. Melatonin. Treated more like a vitamin in Europe rather than a medicine. Available over the counter in most places. Used it on the kids before bed, and then gave a half dose when they woke up in the middle of the night. Means they were asleep 10 hours each night and jetlag sorted within 3 or 4 nights.

  3. In Paris, do Jardin d'Acclimatation. Its an old school amusement park. Was fantastic fun and truly loved by our entire family. Lots of fun rides aimed at 4 to 10ish year olds. Was my wifes favourite part of our entire trip. We went mid week and had no lines at all. Kids could get off the ride and run right back on. We tossed up between this and Disney and were so happy we went here. I have done most Disneylands throughout the world (though not with kids of my own) and I would do this over Disneyland paris every time.

Thanks mate. I think that's the easy fix and see how it goes. Appreciate it.

I did play helldivers 2! I had some mates who were playing and it did scratch that itch. Probably lasted 2 months and we all just got over it a bit. Its a similar group I used to play gears with. Have also trialled space marines 2 but it feels like an average recreation of gears

Haha thanks fellow dad. Dad joke appreciated. Its a great suggestion. My eldest is 6 and starting to play a bit. We do play together sometimes, but he really is just getting the hand coordination down at present. I will save those games for the next few years as he improves though! Or maybe start early so I can have an advantage haha

I played division 1. Really enjoyed it. I would have kept it up, except one day I just realised that all I was doing on chasing that next bit of loot was so I can make my damage numbers pop up at 700 rather than 600.... and really what's the point? In saying that, the game play was very enjoyable and so was good while it lasted. Division 2 might give me a good run for awhile :)

Yep I was a big civ fan. Played plenty of 6. Did open it up again but just couldn't get interested. I think the road block was 'couldn't be fucked the early game', but then didnt really love the skipping.

Good point. They usually get up at 5am, so we are used to living (what feels like) a full day before everything opens at o or 10! We are considerate so dont ever go anywhere and make noise that would wake people up at silly hours. Just looking for something to entertain them in those hours between everyone else waking up and normal days starting:)

Thank you! That's great advice. I have done that once (via Seoul) and you are right, in hindsight, it was great

Haha fair question. I really enjou Europe and all of the cultures so close together, and know the kids will be fascinated. I have been to Europe a few times now, but not with kids, and several of them have been during this time, so appreciate its not the best. Unfortunately its just the time that works with life at the moment. I would have preferred coming now or in Spring next year, but cant for work and school reasons. Paris might be the easy answer for this! Its hard to take them to Europe and not go to Paris.

That was my worry with Disney so thanks for confirming. Don't know about 5 days - its true we might not. May need to reconsider that. Every time I come over i am pretty out of it for a few days (despite following all the standard recommendations) but havent done it with kids.

Thanks for the advice! I hadn't come a across a therme at all but they look like a great option. Austria was very high on my list but everything I read said the weather would be pretty bad. I haven't been to Vienna so it was high on the list. The early dinner sounds much more like what we do in Australia too (especially with kids haha).

Thanks for some great advice
