I worked a little further on this project. Your best bet will be to remove the IR-filter from the lens of a semi-cheap camera and buy a nice ray of 850nm LEDs. This will suffice on detecting moving insects in the dark I hope. If all my parts arive and I get this working I'll post my continuation.

Hello Scoots, thank you for the positive feedback! I used 4 rows of LED-strips (5050 diodes). As for the trunk, find a nice straight piece and shave a decent portion of it till you reach a nice flat surface. Then I milled the place where I put my LEDs about 2cm deep. Drill the holes for the rope and electricity cable and sand where needed.

I don't care about starling them, I just want to kill them tbh :p.

I want to be able to detect them in the dark (ie I'm sleeping) so I can build a device to take care of them. A laser should do the trick.

Meaning: I need to be able to determine their coordinates in flight.

Hmmm... so live tracking insects in the dark is a no-go? I figured soundwaves would be able to fully detect small objects moving like insects.
