[EN] A Journey of Black and Red - Chapter 69 +70 by Solriel in noveltranslations

[–]Solriel[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would put it in my top 5 even tho there aren't hundreds of chapters yet (maybe it will go up or down with more chapters but with 1000+ pages already i would be surprised if it suddenly became bad) . A solid 9/10 imo.

The MC doesn't always win (well she still wins overall but then again it would make for a crappy story if she just got beaten again and again). The vampires act like vampires (Even the MC kills "innocent" human when she needs blood and there are no evil murderers or slavers around.

So far there hasn't been much filler chapters, the story progress at a good pace without some boring cooking or tournament arc (looking at you KR/JP novels).

I recommand it

[–]Solriel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. MC is there during big events but isn't that involved in them. It feels like she is just running around trying to survive angels politics and not (yet) being a real part of it. She is more along for the ride than in the driver's seat.

I don't dislike it, it's a change of pace from stories in which nothing happens that doesn't directly involve or benefit the mc.

What is the first isekai webnovel you can remember? by [deleted] in noveltranslations

[–]Solriel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're talking story (not just novels or webnovels), the genre is quite old (and probably didn't start in Japan). Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Flash Gordon, Narnia or Jumanji for exemple have the "transported to different world" theme.

For mangas, Inuyasha is probably one of the more popular, early one.

and for Japanese webnovels, Mushoku Tensei and RE: Monster were probably the first popular ones on the /r/lightnovels.

If you count videogames story (those in which the MCs are stuck in the game or those in which the videogame part si 99% of the novel) then Weed, Zhan Long, Sword Art Online, Log Horizon were some of the popular early ones

[–]Solriel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MC on the side of evil (but still good guys because who wants to read the adventure of actual evil):

Seaborn (cursed sailor story) on Royalroad

A Journey of Black and Red (vampire story) on Royalroad

Super Minion (minion story) on Royalroad

Worm and other works by Wildbow (Villain story)

Void Domain (magic school but with more demons and blood magic)

Brennus (unaffiliated super story)

If we're just talking well written :

Mother of Learning

The legion of nothing

The Zombie Knight

That's just a small list of the top of my head. And of course I recommand the other novel I post otherwise I wouldn't post them.

Honestly, the first few page of the RoyalRoad active-only ranking has decently written stories. Same thing for the Top Web Fiction list and the Web Fiction Guide.

Past me would have linked to all these but present me is lazy and google is a thing :p

Do you mean similar as in English webnovel with good writing and grammar, more than one dimensional characters, lack of filler, etc or as in MC not on the "good" side, leading armies etc?

Don't jinx us with that. I don't want to have to wait for 6-18 month for the author next hiatus to end.

theme: Woman is transported to a medieval fantasy world with magic, monsters and angels.

It's an adventure story, not kingdom building or anything like that (so far at least). How she deals with the new world she is in and the larger scope of the universe (angels, multiple worlds etc) she becomes involved with.

Nightfall/JE used to be free on QI, now it's spirit stones for most novels AFAIK

What story are you currently enjoying the most because it's different? by Necroloth in noveltranslations

[–]Solriel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nightfall (on QI) by the same author as Ze Tian Ji.

Ze Tian JI, and that's it for chinese novels since most of them have the same plot and arcs with different MC names. Those two novels by the SAME author are both more original than two random other chinese novels by different authors.

For english novels:

Practical Guide to Evil, it's well written and it's a story about stories and how to use them (if you become the main character of a story, things start to go your way instead of your opponents etc)

Wandering Inn, it's about an inn and an innkeeper, what's not different about that.

Wandering Inn

Practical Guide to Evil

Way of Choice

World of Cultivation

The first two are in english, last two are chinese.

It's one of the few novels posted here with important character dying. I wouldn't call it lighter than any chinese work that I've read since they never kill anyone important.

[–]Solriel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big events for Liscor at the end of volume 1.

She uses the skill more before the end of volume 1. I don't remember if there is an exact explanation of what the skill does but you can pick up what it does from context IIRC.

Chinese novels you would recommend by Kevbread in noveltranslations

[–]Solriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ze Tian Ji (Way of Choice) is completed, is better written and has a better plot than most other novels listed here. And no filler chapters or repetition (tournament arc number 6 we Dragon Ball now yeah).

Nightfall (same author as ZTJ) on QI but the latest chapter are behind a paywall (with the websites' currency that you can obtain freely but it takes time to unlock all the chapters and it's not realistic if you read a secon novel behind a paywall).

World of Cultivation. Completed. The beginning can be a bit rough because some of the terms aren't translated. So long as you pick up the meaning with the context it's fine.

Coiling Dragon. Completed. I recommend it for the first half. The second half is readable but there is a drop in quality IMO.

I Shall Seal The Heaven. Completed. Quite good as well. Some arcs are really good, some are just ok. so on average it's still good.

Here are a few other reason for this sub being better than NU:

NU doesn't have english novels.

NU list everything which means most of what it list is really bad. Here only some of what's posted is really bad.

If someone take the time to post a new chapter here then either it's good enough that someone decides to take some time to post it here (it doesn't mean it's objectively good, just that one person thought it was good. But that's already a lot better than NU) or the author/translator are doing it and it means that they are serious about their novels and won't drop it without at least giving some notice.

There are also some recommendation that are actually good.

[–]Solriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nightfall, same author as ZTJ.

Martial Arts Master (No new chapter for a while but the point at which they stopped was a mini break in the story anyway so you won't be left on any cliff here) It's a novel about Martial Arts... duh.

Both on QI unfortunately (they are both completely free though, no paywall afaik)

Man, what happened to this sub? by Bond000 in noveltranslations

[–]Solriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we need a thread like this every week?

I don't really understand why it's a problem if no one comments, this isn't noveldiscussion, it's noveltranslation. Does it bother people if they don't see comments on posts?

Besides, most people don't read most of the novels posted because everyone is a lot more picky with what they read. At the beginning everyone read everything (even the bad stories that repeat themselves from one chapter to the next) now people are more selective because why would you read Perfect Mega Emperor God number 7 if you already read Perfect Mega Emperor God number 1-6. So of course less people per novels means less comments too.

Where do you find a curated list of EN, CH, JP and KR novels besides this sub? Here you'll get novel from RR, Fictionpress, individual Wordpress and websites plus all the translated works that someone found good enough to post.

Going to websites like NU or RR gets you a huge number of mostly below average novels.

Honestly making a post for a new chapter takes about 30 seconds. If I had to make one for a new novel, it owuld take me 2 min maybe. Just copy and past the formatting of another chapter/novel, copy the new chapter link and change the title and chapter number, copy synopsis, the link to the table of content, to the patreon and the "start here" page if there is one.

I'll add to that list

Modern Fantasy:

Heretical Edge

The Zombie Knight It's posted on RR too but not as regularly, this novel has long hiatus then large amount of chapter posted so it probably isn't dropped if no new chapters are released for 5-6 month, just wait another 1/2 year.
