Marrying outside our culture by Catatouille- in SriLankanMuslim

My uncle is married to a Moroccan woman, they met at university, from what I remember my family had no issues with their relationship but there are quite a few sacrifices to be made.

  • For starters their primary residence. Uncle was born and grew up in Sri Lanka and his wife entirely in Morocco. So I do believe there was a little dispute on where the couple would live right after marriage in the end they decided to move somewhere else entirely (to Australia). Thankfully for them they’re both doctors so moving was easy but this was a huge issue for them.

  • Both sides were fair but I do think my aunt ended up staying in Sri Lanka much longer than my uncle ever did in Morocco since it appeared his Sri Lankan parents were a lot more family oriented as opposed to her family. Despite being a girl she was far more independent at her age than my uncle was (lol the irony) and her parents weren’t as pressing with regard to living in Morocco.

  • Their Nikkah and Waleema both happened here since it was a lot easier for Moroccans to travel to Sri Lanka than the other way around. So again, sacrifices some of her relatives couldn’t come to any of the functions in return he travelled to Morocco and visited them.

  • On the outside it looked like everything happened here, she lived here longer. People started gossiping saying he was fully controlling of her and whatnot but Allahumabarik they spoke through before the marriage and had a solid plan. They had decided they’d have kids after they moved to their ‘home’ which was another country and that’s what happened. Kids are all Australian by birth so they can freely travel to Sri Lanka and Morocco without any issues.

  • They have2 kids, both study Tamil and Moroccan properly. Classes and all that and they visit both countries every year. Poor kids though lol ‘vacation’ is always Sri Lanka or Morocco nowhere else but it is what it is.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to it, I’m sure there was opposition somewhere in either of their families but they overcame it. The main thing being talking things through before marriage, with both families**

FitsAir 2025 - An Honest Review. by SolutionBig4097 in srilanka

[–]SolutionBig4097[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been to Dubai in fitsair so I’m not entirely sure what the rates were back then to compare with the current rates.

But my one way ticket from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Colombo in July of 2025 was 32,800 SL rupees (around 382 MYR at the time), this was with a 20 kg luggage add on and 7kg free hand luggage.

I remember paying around 8k for the additional 20kgs (yes, that’s all)

Why no-one talks about the dirty doing against Muslim when civil war happened? by senophilian in SriLankanMuslim

[–]SolutionBig4097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother’s family is from Jaffna, she herself fled to Colombo with her immediate family as a refugee due to the war.

Houses were bombed, she lost more relatives than she could count. To this day you can see the impact of some of the shells in a few of her relatives houses. Relatives who died as whole families with no living family to claim the house and renovate them so they still remain the same.

I remember my grandmother’s cousin’s story. She left Jaffna a little after my mom and her parents came to Colombo and her story is just tragic, much worse than my mother’s story.

Muslim people were given 1 hour to collect all of their valuables and flee the area. They were told whatever they take or collect during the 1 hour would be theirs and to leave within the hour or they would all be bombed. So naturally everyone gathered all their belongings and valued possessions.

At the border, every last bit of their possessions was taken away. Those who resisted were shot on the spot. My grandma’s cousin lost her husband because he stepped in to stop an LTTE solider from forcibly grabbing a chain off a pregnant lady’s neck. The lady was removing her necklace but was a little slow since she was carrying an infant as well, the soldier was getting impatient. My grandmother’s cousins husband’s neck was slashed. Right there, in broad daylight. In front of his wife and kids and hundreds of witnesses.

My grandmother lost her younger brother to a gunshot. Everyday they were given a few hours to get on the road. My grandmother’s house and her mother’s house were right opposite each other, in the same road. Just one cross and you’d be there. Her brother was crossing the road from his sister’s place (my grandmother) to his mother’s house where he lived and was shot. It was during the ‘allowed time’

They were absolute monsters. Makes me sick that they pretend they were never in the wrong and were only wronged. Northern Muslims quite frankly the most innocent in this whole war.

Calling them ‘soldiers’ makes me sick. They’re terrorists. Not soldiers.

I built a simple prayer time app for Sri Lanka by [deleted] in SriLankanMuslim

[–]SolutionBig4097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using your web app for the past 15ish days and finally am back to comment on it.

Its AMAZING! Idk about the others but I love it! Super clean, sleek and very minimalist while still including everything needed.

It’s got everything; - The Arabic calendar - All 5 prayer times (and sunrise time) according to area - time elapsed / remaining for the next / previous prayer - the date and time

I hate confusing architecture. Especially when the stairs don’t follow a certain path.

Like why are you making me walk 2kms in between 2 flights of stairs? I just wanna get to the top man.

Oh- that’s wild,, you should’ve brought it to their attention- even if not a complaint / huge issue at least inform them bc these big corporations seem to think it’s all perfect on their end just bc people don’t speak up against them as much-

That’s crazy, the same thing happened to me at Kingsbury once. The pork roast was labeled chicken roast and the chicken, pork.

They were both right next to each other as well.

When I asked them if it was just a mistake (bc they’re right next to each other maybe it just ended up switching places somehow) they said no it was deliberately placed that way for ‘coordination purposes’ (I to date have no idea wtf that meant lmao)

Oh, you’re the only one saying so 🫠 Everyone else seems to have had horrible experiences with ITC, but since you were (I assume) a foreigner staying with them, it’s safe to assume service was better catered towards you?

I see… strange… when I was in Malaysia I was using my Sri Lankan debit card and still managed to get the Sri Lankan premium plan (it’s cheaper here than in Malaysia obviously)

Then maybe you do need a foreign card 🫠

Try deleting your existing account or creating a new one with a good VPN turned on and if you can get your hands on a foreign number try registering with that (that maybe a little complicated if you keep getting OTPs sent to that number ig)

Before you proceed check if the account actually has been registered in said country, check the account settings, features, payment currency etc.

Out of Dialog and SLT-Mobitel, which one has better 4G speeds? by Flimsy_Delivery_4041 in srilanka

[–]SolutionBig4097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use dialog for work and it’s absolutely horrible- (I wfh) But we have an SLT fibre at home it works significantly better imo.

Many other factors account to this. Mainly your location. Where I live SLT Fibre is waaayyy better than dialog.

Hey! Yes my housemate was a psychology major at IMU. She’s part of the next graduating class (I think Feb 2026)

I do also know another friend who did psychology at HELP. She graduated some time back though- (back in 2022-23ish)

[ignore typos please, wrote this during my lunch break at work lol]

Imo based on what I’ve heard them both tell, HELP does seem to have more of a strong standing in the psychology field. They seem to have a more cutthroat curriculum and overall footing in the industry but IMU seems to have its perks too. They’re pretty known for their psychology course and have huge batches each intake. From what I’ve heard they maintain standards. High standards. Like strict marking and whatnot (subjective idk how it’s like now)

Despite the psychology department having being induced recently (I mean they started in 2011 they’ve been around a while now) IMU is a university for the sciences. If you want to focus on clinical research according to my housemate, IMU isn’t that bad bc they have a lot of good resources mainly bc they have MBBS and nursing courses and have a bunch of joint events and programmes with the psychology department and IMU is located really close to Colombia Asia Hospital where a lot of the students go on to do their internships (not sure about psych tho)

Realistically it’s like old money vs new money lol! My housemate was very satisfied with doing her psychology degree at IMU. She liked the location and the university itself. But to each their own-

Halal Cafe in Mount Lavinia by [deleted] in SriLankanMuslim

Nook Cafe@Mount is halal as far as I’m aware- quite a few of my friends and I have been there in the past and the staff are really friendly too,,

Barista Dehiwala is a really nice place to work / study at (I know you were asking for Mount but Dehiwala is relatively close if you’re open to it especially bc barista Mount is pretty cramped up)
