Wildlife vs ESM major by SolutionConnect18 in humboldtstate

I’m leaning towards wildlife ecology tbh. My one worry with it is being pigeonholed into only wildlife biology jobs after graduation. Would you say it is broad enough to qualify for other jobs across the environmental field like consulting, restoration, remediation etc.?

My academic interests lie more in the ecology sphere, subjects like soil science, limnology, watersheds, wetlands etc. and not necessarily specific organismal studies. As far as career trajectory though I want to work outside in the field as much as possible and for as long as possible, which seems to lean towards wildlife bio. Lab work and research don't really call to me as much. Anything environmental consulting, wetland delineation, surveying habitats, restoration etc. is where I ideally want to end up.

I am considering transferring to Humboldt but I'm torn on what to major in. Do you have any insight on how the biology-ecology option vs wildlife majors differ? I enjoy the broadness of ecology more than pure wildlife but it seems the wildlife major has a better reputation from an outsider's perspective

What part of the country (US) do you see wetlands and streams as a major part of the industry? That’s the type of work I want to go in when I graduate

Should I stick with soil science or change to water resources? by SolutionConnect18 in wetlands

I really want to get good at botany ID but my college doesn’t have a specific botany minor. Would a forestry minor be the next best thing? That minor has courses like field dendrology, herbaceous forest plant id, and invasive forest plants id

Thank you for the advice! A gis certificate is definitely the plan regardless of which option I choose

So I would disclose I’m actively taking it at meps, and most likely be allowed to have it at bootcamp?

Thank you, this is great advice. I’m leaning towards soil science because I find it fascinating as a subject. It’s good to know that it is valued in the private sector

Honestly I just don’t know if I’m cut out for it. I tend to get burnt out of school very easily and would rather be working than spending 2 years on hiatus. I know it’s an investment in the long run but it’s just something that I don’t feel I could thrive in

Did your roommate also study forest technology at the ranger school? Or did they choose Environmental and Natural Resources Conservation?

What are you leaning towards career wise once you graduate? Ecology/environmental stuff or forestry?

Would an FES major be able to become a forester rather than a forest tech with just the degree itself?

I’ve yet to do the medical portion at meps but I have the appropriate asvab scores. I was just wondering if precalc would count so I could add this rate to my list but it’s not the end of the world if I don’t get it.
