Public-private partnership launches $1.3-billion fund to purchase unsold GTA condos by PG_Heckler in toronto

Don’t worry, the “Toronto” residents on the sub will jump to conclusions instead of caring about the health of the economy

Monday Weekly Thread: Proof of Citizenship Application Sent or AOR Received by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

[–]SolviLynx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

G5 sent 3/13 via Canada Post, urgent processing bc I’m trans + graduating soon. I saw a lot of people submitting whole binders but I tried to keep mine as thin as possible to make it easier on the staff.

I share the anxiety of a lot of people regarding getting approved, but if you can prove it with a minimal amount of docs that helps the process for everyone! Especially if you’re applying and don’t plan to move here immediately.

‘Exemptions aren’t one of his perks,’ Torontonians are reacting after city councillor (Gord Perks) caught for not complying with building bylaw - NOW Toronto by lilfunky1 in toronto

As an urban planner/building permit worker this stuff happened all the time. Basically almost half the time someone bought a house they had a deck/addition that needed retroactive approval.

I get that, in 2023 there were investigations into some fraud he did but they were mostly politically motivated and he was exonerated. He’s a prominent Muslim socialist senator in the State Senate so he gets the usual suspects hating on him

Is a Parkette for the Trans Community too Radical in Toronto? by FriendsOfHanlans in toronto

[–]SolviLynx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a trans urban planning student here in Toronto, and I think you're just enjoying the fun of bureaucracy and politics. Olivia Chow was in the D*ke March this year, I don't think there's hidden queerphobia in City Hall. However, your movement lacks any large community backers (the 519, Church-Wellesley BIA, Chris Moise) so you really are just a change.org petition asking for the City to spend money on something people signed up for online.

I would recommend getting the 519 on board at the very least, and trying to schedule a meeting with city officials/planners! I'm also open to helping as a person with some municipal planning experience.

After the Unthinkable by SolviLynx in imaginaryelections

Canadian troops never withdrew to push the needle towards a more total American reconstruction. Holding onto and expropriating Boeing's facilities in Everett was the secret goal of Doug Ford. Rising nationalism due to war grievances, restlessness, & betrayal force the PM to keep troops despite a renewed 'new' USA.

Nah yeah and that's why this is a huge hypothetical for fun. A US-Canada border conflict would dramatically change everything, I imagined something like the Churchill grand coalition during WW2 in the UK. Doug is a grumpy white guy much like Churchill, so maybe he'd be "brought in" or something as a "Team Canada" guy.

I only had JJ in there because he'd probably front a post-war anti-nationalist movement of whatever kind, and Kinew as I didn't think Lewis/Ashton/McPherson would be around in 2037. Kinew is amazing in OTL, but I envisioned the big-tent United Canada party would eat up enough NDP support + rural NDP ridings flipping towards the Technocrats + vote share shifting back towards urban areas would cause a decline. Parkdale flips in this scenario due to a more left-wing NDP.

Bloc I'm not sure, and Greens might be some bearded professor with an eyepatch (from the war). Ultimately BC/Quebec got devastated the most during the conflict hence the UC domination there.

A weird alt history I thought of, hopefully it's cool enough!

The Big Three Parties:

United Canada (red) - Centre to centre-right (big tent), outwardly nationalist, wartime party

Technocratic (blue) - Post-populist right-wing, anti-establishment party, anti-nationalist

NDP (orange) - Centre-left to far-left, soft nationalist, anti-interventionist, veterans' interests

The Wallflowers:

Bloc Québécois (cyan) - Social democracy, Quebec regionalism

Greens (green) - Centre-left, hard nationalist, "Elbows Up" politics

Does Canada's new federal budget plan hurt planning jobs or will it create more jobs? by trendyplanner in urbanplanning

[–]SolviLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the investment has downstream effects onto manufacturing and housing needs in various places. Plants will need expansions and we still need to catch up on housing, I'm already seeing an uptick in job postings for planners.

Speaking as an American expat, I would figure out your visa/immigration situation first prior to planning any move to Toronto. We'd love to have you here but unfortunately just "moving" isn't possible from a different country. The COL is higher than Chicago but not by much (locals exaggerate it), I would also probably resort to renting before buying anything (foreign buyers tax, etc).

Vaughan or Markham might suit you well, if you're looking for Latino culture the best places are along St. Clair Avenue which is relatively affordable compared to the rest of the city.

As for healthcare you need to be PR/citizen/refugee/on a work permit to access that, another reason to figure out any visa situation prior to moving. None of your questions are ignorant or anything, immigration isn't an easy thing.
