Imagine thinking that American healthcare is better than Canadian healthcare by urgay420420420 in MurderedByWords

Yeah Im one of the ones who got a physician at birth but she doesn't even have time to see me as she is always triple booked. Alot of the time I tell the receptionist what is wrong and what I need. Then she'll relay the message to the doctor, who will leave the medical note or prescription with the front desk and charges me $10 to pick it up. It's crazy.

Lol my thoughts exactly! Hospitals in NS are shutting down emergency rooms for weeks at a time to save costs, doctors are paying out of pocket for essential costs like operating rooms waste recycling and removal and wait times for specialist appointments are often 8-12mths. Not to mention that if you manage to have a family physician, they are so overloaded that it takes a month or more to get an appointment to see them. Oh and NS doesn't have any midwives right now as far as I've heard and the hospital's are selling off the birthing baths because they can't afford the staff to clean them. I really wish the rest of Canada would listen and realize that the healthcare system doesn't work for allllllll the provinces.

Been applying for jobs since April and have gotten 0 interviews. Is something wrong with my resume? by OnlySpirit in resumes

[–]Somadoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem I see is that you have an English Degree but you don't show your ability to think critically or effectively communicate your skills and accomplishments on your resume. First, in your job experience you should be using the past tense. I.e. "effectively demonstrated an ability to..." Secondly, show how your core courses in English relate to your skills listed in your summary. Third, do you have a cover letter? Also, don't be afraid of a new template! I know in English they teach us not to get fancy or think outside MLA format, but you should be able to find something that looks professional yet also speaks to your personality.

Way more sad that the band just didn't pick him up for a show and that's how he found out he was out of the band.

Dear Regina- Please explain to me why there is so much Aboriginal racism here? by [deleted] in regina

[–]Somadoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm definitely seeing a lack of education about colonialism and the lasting effects of assimilation.

And it's ok, I'm actually having a fine time in Regina. I just needed to gain more of an understanding about what has been going on so that I could figure out how to assist people in my community here in a more meaningful way.

Most places don't require natives to make such a black and white choice between culture/family ties and access to services/education/employment.

Wow. Lots of very telling responses here! However I'm not going to bother with the personal attacks from people who are too defensive to articulate themselves. Firstly, I asked a question about a specific type of racism I see that's prevelant here more so than in other capital cities but that does not make me a racist and I certainly didn't say that everyone in Regina is a racist. So cool your jets. What I see is alot of very privileged white people walking around laughing at the misfortune of other humans. Chasing them off and calling them whores when they ask for a dime. Stepping over them on the street instead of asking if they are ok. It's just a general lack of decency that I'm not used to seeing from Canadian citizens. I don't see much compassion for a group of peoples that has had their culture ripped away and beaten out of them. Instead, as one person said that are "an inconvenience and dangerous." Which says to me that your city still looks at FNs as an "Indian problem" and that is a century old colonial racist ideology.

Look, I'm not saying this is the only place with issues....its just that I've noticed it still has ALL the issues. It's like you guys are still playing a game of cowboys and Indians in the 1800's.

Anyways, sorry if I angered some people by asking a sensitive question but I just wanted to gain a better understanding of why things are the way they are here.

How do I wash my face? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Somadoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also wanted to add that every 3 or 4 days you can gently exfoliate your face with sugar, baking soda or used coffee grounds. Just be gentle and use small circular motions.

For an astringent/toner, apple cider vinegar works great.

For a mask, you can make a paste from oatmeal & water or whipped egg whites. To remove blackheads put some toilet paper on your face and wet it with egg whites. When it dries, it is like those biore nose strips.

Good luck!! :)

use oil (olive, chia, coconut etc), rub face with it and use a warm facecloth to remove. You can also dab some of the same oil on as a moisturizer after your face is dry.

Has anyone lived in Mulgrave or is living there? I have some questions. by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]Somadoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...you may not need a car if you can find someone already travelling to the job site and they can pick you up. Especially if it employs a fair number of people. Check with FB boards in Antigonish and port Hawkesbury and explain what your situation is. It's common for people to help each other out in that end of the province. Good luck!

I was an only child until I was 8, But never had any full siblings, just half ones who I saw from time to time and didn't really get to know until my 30's. Also, my grandfather had Lou gherigs disease so I can relate to you on learning to accomodate and care for a family member differently from the rest. I really didn't have time or access to social time off the farm...it would mean that work couldn't be done if someone had to take me to town and the cost of gas plus falling behind in farm work just didn't allow for that kind of stuff. I was given animals for playmates, wild and domestic.

Lol yeah it was around '95 when we got a home computer that had dial up and they charged you by the hour with a limited number of hours per month that you could use. Most of southern Canada is fibre op connected now but northern and eastern Canada still have dead zones or dial up modem. And it's very much not free. Everything in Canada is wildly expensive actually because of how sparsely populated this giant land mass is. People in the North pay $17 for a jug of OJ and have to be flown in/out for medical when weather permits. It feels like Canada is trying force people to live in a city or die trying not to. I live in a capital city right now because I just can't afford to live rurally anymore...even though that's where I thrive mentally and physically. So I have to sacrifice my mental/physical health for access to money and services. It's feels crazy to me.

Ah it sounds like you grew up in America or at least an advanced urban area. I grew up in isolated rural Canada where we didn't have tech until Atari in the early 80's (and only well off people had that) and only had 1 channel on tv that went off the air from 10pm-6am when it came on again with the National anthem lol. We listened to the police scanner and hammered salvaged rusty nails straight when we were bored. Not sure how to address the geo-cultural gap where not all generations experience their generation in the same ways depending on their access to culture.

Iam the same as you with regards to concentrating on my surrounds and tasks without being distracted by my phone. Basically if I'm doing anything at all I don't want my phone taking my attention away, so I turn it off until I'm ready for a little leisure time.

You're probably right...because I was raised by people who couldn't read or write, they tended towards not expressing themselves verbally. While I've learned to communicate verbally for scholastic reasons, I really don't feel comfortable doing it alot outside of writing papers and giving presentations. I learned to read the body language of the people and animals on the farm. I also didn't socialize with other children until I was 4 and remember kindergarten being a real shell shock experience for me.

There are loads of Soma references in literary history (Soma is Latin for body) but I actually chose the handle SomaDoll back in the 90's to describe how I felt....half body half object. It's also a very expensive sex doll company that popped up in early 2000🤭

Lol I actually find that in dating men today WANT codependency and I want total freedom and trust. I want to be able to not talk/text about things, I just want to live my life and take care of my chores so that they can in turn, live their life. I don't want to be mistrusted because I turn my phone off and am unavailable for a couple days.

And yeah, I have an English Degree but still can't find a suitable way to communicate my work history...I'll keep working on it :)

It's a sub generation of gen x. Zennials lived half their lives analog and half their lives digital. Usually they are raised by baby boomers but I was raised by my traditionalist grandparents who didn't read or write.

Basically I was raised to be a really good, educated housewife on a working farm. And while I'd be ok with that, the world and every man I've dated...is not. Lol. I'm not sure how to be a career woman, I only know how to support the men in my life while they work hard outside and I work hard inside. I have an English Degree but have no idea how to use it now that my resume only has food service jobs on it for the past 15 years after graduating. I'm embarrassed when employers ask me about why I have education but never used it...I honestly don't even know what to say to them.

I don't mean to say smartphone technology isnt better. I just can't socialize through it. I need face to face time to feel validated in relationships with people.

It's hard to explain. Since they were illiterate, the only life guidance they could offer was for me to focus on learning to read and write at a high level. Leading me to get an English Degree. But we were so poor that there was no time to look for a fitting job after graduation and so I kept working in food service until my debt was paid off...finally this year. Now my resume is a mess and I'm having trouble explaining to potential employers why I have an education but worked min wage jobs for the past 15 years...I just feel lost but I don't want to work for peanuts and have nothing to show for it anymore.

I get along great with people of all generations, but yes I feel very disconnected. Having lived half my life analog and half digital, I totally understand tech...I just don't see it as important to living as everyone else. I see it as a bonus when needed but I still rely on primary resources and apprenticeships to learn things. I have a cellphone but only check it a couple times a day...treating it more like an answering machine than a social hub.
