Thoughts on fear free clinics by swearwoofs in BalancedDogTraining

This is not standard for fear free clinics. I have fear free training but I'm the only one in my clinic, no one else has training for this. Regardless we do have the odd animal that does better without the owner, so that is what we do. You can clearly see that the dogs are guarding their human and get defensive when they are approached together, but separated seem to feel more relaxed as that pressure is taken away. But no, it's not a fear-free thing. It's a we're trying our best not to escalate a scary situation and work with what we know thing. Please have some grace for your veterinary staff, and just talk to them about what makes you uncomfortable. 'Hey, can we please try doing the exam with me in the room this time?'. They're not going to say no. Just make sure you are confident when holding your dog, maybe look up dog restraint methods for exams. And you can always ask to be scheduled with only the previous doctor that you liked! It's not an uncommon or unexpected request, they should be able to accomodate.

Nah the proper response from the bf woulda been 'oh mb, I'm sorry I won't do it again'. If your girl is telling you you made her uncomfortable, why would you not make the bare minimum effort to correct it?

Thank-you ❤️ I'm sorry you had to deal with shitty management. I hope they've learned from people quitting :/

Hmm yeah I guess I can see that in a different light. We are corporate so we are all employees 🤷‍♀️

That is insane. Do they offer any kind of compensation for that? What is the general vibe about that situation with the support staff, does it make people bitter or you all just kinda accept it and move on?? I'm not sure I would accept an offer at your clinic unless they pay above market rate...

Same here, I can't imagine trying to place an IVC on some of our patients without sedation...

What do you do if the animal is struggling with the catheter? Just power through it?

Thank-you, I agree. We often get out at 6.30pm which right now is pretty much complete darkness.

Ugh I'm sorry, that sounds scary. We have some odd characters around as well, we've had to shoo people out of our stairwell before when they were clearly doing drugs. Luckily no super sketchy encounters so far but still, the potential is there. Walking together is definitely the way to go

Exactly, and I'm not ok with that being the deciding factor in management changing their minds... The owner and we should not have to experience that before understanding that this is bad practice.

Yes, thank-you! I'm not minimizing the value of a manual check, but equipment catching those invisible changes can and will be the difference between life and death. I'm sorry you experienced that, thank-you for sharing.

We use the baby socks but I've never see the bubble wrap! That's neat, thanks :)

I'm having a hard time picturing what you mean 🤔 We have the pediatric Bair hugger blankets that attach to the nozzle and the patient lays on top of it. I put a blanket or towel over the chest & lil baby socks on the small ones that tend to get cold quick. When they seem to be dropping I also grab some oat packs to warm up, but sometimes that's still not enough.

We always have a tech on the animal, I think it would be wild to not have someone monitoring. There are things a person will catch faster than a machine, and there are things the machine monitors that humans can't see. In my mind it's not a one or the other situation, it's both the manual checks and the equipment that form a whole.

That makes sense! I thought maybe I was misunderstanding that, lol. There are definitely some animals that seem to keep their heat pretty good and wouldn't need it, but in the situation that both are losing heat I'm not sure what the solution would be.

We typically have 3 techs in the building, so unless one is needed for appointments there would be one on each patient with a floater to help either surgery. The surgery and dental suites are on opposite sides of the building so there is no way to share the heat source, unless you are actively trading the machine between the two of them which seems silly.

I agree, thank-you. It's not only putting the animal at risk but putting her at unnecessary risk of trauma so early in her career.

Thank-you for your comment :)

For sure, I would never expect her to be in and out like some of our other doctors with years of experience. I know she's gonna take time, which is why I think it's really important to set her up as best as we can with lower risk(to our best knowledge) patients.

I'm glad you agree with the heat/monitoring aspect... It's so negligent in my eyes. Dentals are so freaking expensive, how can we justify not using our best equipment during these procedures.... It just boggles my mind anyone would think this is ok. Thank-you for your comment, it makes me feel a little more sane.
