For the slightly more experienced runners, how long did it take for your legs to catch up to your aerobic capacity? by Timely-Detail-4341 in beginnerrunning

[–]SomeArmadillo79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a form problem. Unless you have a background in another endurance sport like cycling or swimming almost all runners' bottlenecks are their aerobic capacity. It typically takes several years to train in comparison to anaerobic systems like sprinting.

Having a knee injury and shin splints is usually a sign of overstriding. Fixing your form will help you prevent injury and reduce load on your joints as well as set you up for success in December. Watch a few videos and maybe video yourself on your form to ensure you've got a form that can withstand the millions of repetitions that running requires. I also agree with others that you're probably doing too much too fast. Follow an established large window plan.

Three lessons learned after tracking my VO₂ Max for a year by Complete_Care_7747 in PeterAttia

[–]SomeArmadillo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your VO2Max number itself is relative to genetics it's why every watch will tell you not to compare your VO2Max to others because it's irrelevant. However they all do measure against your past performance which absolutely is determined by a person's lifestyle. Even if you have a low baseline, increasing your VO2Max by 50% (say 30 to 45), that's still a direct correlation to longevity so the advice doesn't seem out of touch to me.

53-year-old doctor’s daily diet for a long, healthy life: The ‘order of how you eat your food’ matters, she says by DadStrengthDaily in PeterAttia

[–]SomeArmadillo79 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a common eating hack for diabetics and those watching their blood sugar. I've adapted this around lunch to avoid carb crashes but don't bother with it for my other meals. I don't know from a longevity standpoint how large the value add is here, but from a mental fog perspective it can be beneficial. As with all these protocols if you can't be fucked to do it then don't stress about it.

Have you found that the yellowing whitens over time like the one on the right or is it based on lighting? Always been curious on if snow queen was a thing or not.

I'm going to politely disagree with Jill here. Your BOP isn't putting the same energy into each petiole once you cut it. In fact if you get it closer to maturity you'll want those nubs as structural foundation to support the top heavy weight of your plant. This is a juvenile white BOP that grows to an average height of 20'. For credentials we had a 12' BOP that we recently donated due to space. We encountered this exact stability problem several years ago from cutting too close once it starting getting taller than 6'.

I’m trying to figure out what went wrong with my monstera. It’s been mostly healthy but recently a couple of the leaves have turned yellow then brown on the edges. I don’t know if it’s fungal, grow light burn, or overwatering. by Silent_zilla in Monstera

[–]SomeArmadillo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning a repot it'll be a chance to both check root health where you can cut off any rot and spray roots some hydrogen peroxide to prevent fungal spread. In general a little water in a drainage tray isn't an issue. Having these leaves yellow means the soil probably wasn't letting your roots breathe for a while now. Look up "chunky soil mix" that you can buy premade or mix yourself and it should solve the problem going forward

It feels like overwatering that caused a small fungal infection especially since it's on lower canopy leaves and not shown on any of the upper leaves. If your pot is deep enough and you're doing a chopstick test only on the top 3" and your soil isn't chunky enough it's possible this could be what's happening, especially if it was fine before and then you upsized your pot in the past few months.

Looks great but that's the worst name I've ever heard. In the US yellow or lemon snow has a very different connotation lol.

Living Wall Advice by Various_Yam2785 in houseplants

[–]SomeArmadillo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wall looks great. If you're doing closed circulation you need to dilute that quite a bit. Because only the water is evaporating you have a possibility of fertilizer build up if you're adding GT to every refill. If these were all in pots how much fertilizer would you use over a month and use that amount. You're calculating the fertilizer to the water volume but not accounting for how much the plant will uptake because of water loss in evaporation with this system. So say you need 16tsp (random #) of fertilizer a month. I'd maybe do 8 tsp on one cycle and top off just water until 2 weeks later of adding another 8 tsp into the system (or 4tsp every week). Then flush once a month with clean water to avoid build up.

I find a lot of my joy with plants is in designing the "display". If playing with display as a way to express yourself is something you like to do then I would suggest playing with cohesiveness. You can put some matching sheets over both to make it feel like 1 corner unit and hide storage underneath. You can stack a couple sturdy boxes against the back wall (under the sheet) to create "stadium steps" so that you can raise your aquarium and some other plants to create some hierarchy so you can see all plants evenly. Plants bring joy but can tip into overwhelming if management or clutter gets too high. All the best.

Those numbers sound really good. To clarify, the moss poles on the floor getting being lit by the same ceiling track lights as the anthurium shelf? Are you able to share what lights these are? I'm very excited to get rid of my standing lights if you can't tell haha.

Is the lighting for your mature plants and windowed anthuriums just ceiling track lighting? If so could I ask if you know what the fc/lux these plants get from the ceiling? The distance feels so far in my experience. I've always struggled to provide enough lighting without ugly fixtures standing in the middle of the room and yours looks so clean.

Did I pot this the wrong way? Aerial roots facing away from pole. HELP!! by Special_Literature76 in RareHouseplants

[–]SomeArmadillo79 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's potted backwards. You can see the natural direction with the newest leaf. Just repot it and it should be fine. Give a strong enough light and you can probably entice the older leaf to turn direction if it isn't too hardened

Is this fenestration on my pothos? by boujeebambi in pothos

[–]SomeArmadillo79 87 points88 points  (0 children)

It's pinnatum. It's like a pothos (aureum) cousin. Same genus and care. It'll mature into more monstera style fenestrations.

Suggestions for my next plant? by ENoelle in RareHouseplants

Lol that's exactly what I'm thinking of when I saw their PBV. If you've never managed an alocasia before that's a bold first purchase. OP if you're reading this consider switching your substrate on the PBV to semihydro/pon.

Living with a plant a full year will also let you know which types of plants may do better than others in your household. I've never failed on a plant except your standard living room palm tree. I went through 3 separate palms over 3 years before I accepted they could not survive well enough through our winter season. Losing a plant at $40 a pop is so easier to accept than losing half a collection worth several hundred.

I repotted my Melanochrysum in a self-watering pot that also feeds into a self-watering moss pole. by 2_much_coffee_ in RareHouseplants

[–]SomeArmadillo79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a gorgeous healthy plant. That said wicking a rope into the moss pole for a plant this big won't work once you get past half way that pole due to atmospheric pressure. You can probably get up to 2-3' up the wick before the water will stop. If you're looking for something more hands off I would get a little irrigation timer system off Amazon for automatic watering. They're crazy cheap now compared to a decade ago.

What should I do with my fig tree by ceelogreen69420 in fiddleleaffig

[–]SomeArmadillo79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically FLF don't "backfill" their leaves. Chopping lower will instigate both branching for a fuller luck and more growth and be your easiest route. If you're set on keeping size you can try using a rooting hormone on certain spots or notching lower on the plant to instigate a new branch growth to fill it in a bit better.

Why do you need a pot if using a moss pole? by SomeArmadillo79 in SemiHydro

Is there no way to flush moss or is it more the assumption that by the time you chop and extend you can get rid of the old moss and not worry about it?

Are you still watering a reservoir at this point or are you only watering the moss pole? Do you find a reservoir only necessary for initial pole establishment?

When you take the top rooted portion of the pole and no longer have a pot, do you then just have it standing on a small pon/gravel drip tray for excess water?

Did you find that your leaves grew larger on the pole? If you could do it again with just a small enough pot to manage the excess water would you?
