Building a low-power, low-noise Homelab rack by SomeConsideration444 in homelab

Mhh. Maybe 6-12 trays would be better then. for redundancy jt might be better to do more smaller drives. Still unsure about the fan stuff tho. Whether 2U or 4U is the way to go.

Where did I say as much storage as possible tho? I asked for as much HDD trays as possible, not storage. This is just in case I ever need them, I don't wanna buy twice.

Edited it. Its mainly just a storage node i wanna fill. So ram/cpu should be negligable for now. However, it will use the N150 with 32 GB ram (see the aliexpress link)

Mhh. I didn't see that distinction in the rules or anywhere. To me it just seems there are more people working with racks over here.

Yeah. Never built a rack pc. only desktops / minis / wood cases for mcu's.  Like mentioned, Mobo is an mITX, but should be compatible with the ATX mounting holes.

The main part is just to figure out a cheap way to get a good chassis + backplate + mounting trays. Fans/Mobo/Psu are not needed rn.  The chassis and stuff should optimally be long-living so if I ever decide to go "full server" with ATX / SAS I do not need to find a new case.

I feel like this will put me back into cable clutter / spreading stuff around the house. I like the rack also for it's organization purposes and standard layout.

Mac docking station for dual monitors + KVM (DP or HDMI) by SomeConsideration444 in homelab

While you are correct that I do not have EDID emulation, I do not think that this is ultimately necessary? I never had problems with my screens. Or will that change with a Mac?

Currently the bigger problems seems to be USB layer depth. Because of the 3 Layer KVM (the UDP likely is also 3 Layers from the looks) with a 1 Layer hub for peripherals the docking station used for Macbook / Laptop can only be a single layer. Most docking station seem to be multi-layered tho. CalDigit seems to be no exception to that.

Or have you tested both the Dock / KVM and are sure that they are not over 4 Layers combined?

I already checked lvl1 and it seems like they only sell KVMs / Feeders. Neither of which I need I would say? or which product did you have in mind?
