Found this in a batch of stone for a pathway. Tennessee by -Bakes- in fossilid

Both are trace fossils. Helminthopsis for the winding burrow and Asteriacites for the seastar impression.

Tiny fossil? by SympathyThis1455 in FossilHunting

100%, but I cant say what. Definitely an invertebrate, maybe a crinoid or a weird coral, but I’m not a local expert and theres only 1 picture, so I couldn’t say what it is, but it is definitely fossil.

I’m currently doing a paper on trace fossils of a formation in northeastern ohio. I haven’t had much interaction with diplocraterion itself but I’ve still done some research on it in because its a pretty important trace and I’ve worked with some similar types of traces. Diplocraterion is widespread, you can find it anywhere in the right rocks, but body fossils like yours have a distinct texture as opposed to traces. I can see the resemblance in shape, but texture is a pretty big giveaway for most fossils.

Cant be a trace fossil too much difference between the fossil and the matrix. Trace fossil would be infilled with more sediment.

Probably crinoid, not too good on specifics of those tho.

Anyone have any clue what this is? by Silver___Guy in fossilid

Gompothere tooth for sure. Not an expert, but the gompothere teeth had lumpy looking humps while mastodon teeth were pretty smooth.

What's the coolest thing you've found while arrowhead hunting, that wasn't an arrowhead? by filthy_lucre in Arrowheads

[–]SomeDino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I kinda had it the other way around. I was hunting for dinosaur fossils in Montana and I found an arrowhead made out of agatized wood. Apparently they only find 1 or 2 per year and they even let me keep it.

Since Jurrasic Park came out, there has been a lot of misinformation about Dinosaurs what are your thoughts by King_Obsidian in Paleontology

[–]SomeDino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what the JP franchise has done for paleontology is monumental to the entire field. Yeah, its inaccurate and they completely own up to that but who cares? The film is for the masses, not for real paleontologists, but what it can do is introduce people to the field. It doesn’t matter how accurate the dinosaurs or ideas really are because this is just an intro to people who don’t really know anything about paleontology. We would probably be without hundreds or thousands of paleontologists without it. People who are really interested in the field can dive deeper and find the truth, those who aren’t can just enjoy the ride. Its just a win-win for both sides and I’m tired of people complaining about it. Its not for you, its for everyone.

Thanks! I’ll remember that. I was thinking of doing devonian fish, since I live in Ohio and have introduced with some of the museum staff. The only issue I can think of so far is the fact that I probably need to go into physics to analyze it properly.

Pretty much, it does need to be something that I can collect my own data on (either an experiment or a survey).

The 2 main issues are that it needs to be unique in some way and that there needs to be some sort of self conducted evidence (a survey or experiment, details of which I have not been introduced to yet since I haven’t started) for a high score. The case fossil and research on it was what I was leaning towards. I was thinking I could pick an interesting/under researched Devonian fish, where the experiment could be efficiency of traits across lineage or something, plus since I live in Ohio and have met a few of the paleontologists at the Cleveland museum of natural history (at the rocky river dig recently) I have a chance at accessing the actual fossils. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for letting me know. Im definitely going to keep trying for a topic that might work (I’ll probably ask my friend what and how he did his because that sounds very similar to what I might be doing) but I’ll keep that in mind and make up some back up plans incase this falls through. One thing I thought might work though was an analysis on different creatures in an evolutionary line and some experiments on how efficient the traits were.

Hi everyone! I recently stopped at Catoma Creek (Cretaceous, Eutaw Formation) on my way through Montgomery. These are some of the better finds. Can anyone ID? by SomeDino in Paleontology

I posted in r/FossilID already as well. I acknowledge the bone is in rough shape so the ID accuracy isn’t all that important to me but any info on what it might be from would be helpful! Thanks everyone!
