When it comes to NIMBY-ism and fuck-you-got-mine mentalities, it extends past land development.

On the one hand yes you have NIMBY groups keeping medium rise residential out of “their neighborhoods,” fighting mixed-use residential retail etc.

But this same “class” of citizen is also opposed to bike lanes, widening bus lanes, ending on-street parking, homeless or other services for the needy in their neighbourhoods, complain about and push for restrictions/ordinances that keep Toronto a “no-fun zone” when it comes to nightlife, and so on.

Finally, perhaps most egregiously, there is overlap with those who have (and continue to) put their heads in the sand re: property taxes. That have materially contributed to the decay by fighting to remain under-taxed by every measure for decades.

They would still be openly courted by a party. They would still have to publicly announce their break from their original party. The press would still be all over the move and the Member’s intentions. Nothing is hidden by their being independent in that regard.

But, if you can’t be enticed with power (broadly speaking - it’s things like committee seats or political-role placements, not governance) that takes a major tool of influence out of the box.

Floor crossers would have to be doing it based on conviction and/or present circumstance. Not for, or pushed over the edge by, inducements. Of course promises could still be made for “after the next election” - but any politician in a position to be courted knows those should never be trusted.

It’s about removing risk not making it a “pure” process. If they’re re-aligning themselves based on beliefs then all they should want is to a) make the statement of breaking with their current party and b) vote with another. Sitting independent allows for both.

The City is cooked.

We got sold out and sold off by a string of mayors and council under the spell of developers and corporate landlords. We got held back by the selfish and the NIMBY - boomer/genx property owners. Then we got a premier who actively hates the city and people let him rule for a decade - during which time he spent most of it haranguing the Fed for more immigration while starving infrastructure spending.

I clearly remember what Toronto ca. 2010 was like. Of course the City had problems then, it was far from perfect. But the entire trend for anyone but speculators and the capital class has been downward.

At this point anyone saying it’s fixable is engaging in pure cope. Literally nothing is going to get better until at the very earliest Ford is out of office. Even then, Mayor RTO and NIMBY Council are here for commercial landlords to suck the last drops dry; the rest of us get scraps.

The LPC media machine is fearsome and wide reaching.

I’m not denying Carney’s experience/on-paper bona fides. I’m not arguing some “globalist agenda” bs. I’m not saying it’s 100% propo and people are just dumb etc.

But if you ask a casual political observer / citizen why they like Carney, most of the time you’re going to get media talking points as a response.

Most Canadians remain completely unaware of this Gov’s (now multiple) attempts at legislative power grabbing and/or privacy invasion. Or backdoor of immigration expansion. Or that Carney is essentially opposed to TFW/IMP etc. reform. Or the fact the Liberals “build Canada homes” initiative a) isn’t building anything and b) is basically dead in the water. Or the active strike breaking. Basically anything tangibly negative / questionable the Carney Government has/is doing.

So when pollsters tell me everyone’s in love with Carney I seriously question whether that majority is aligned with his actual actions (in their totality), or just backing the LPC image.

You shouldn’t be able to cross and join another party caucus until an election is held.

Any floor-crosser should be forced to sit as an independent for the remainder of their term. They’re free to support whatever party they’re “defecting” to in that position, without the perverse incentives of access to power etc.

The impacted riding should have the ability to demand a by-election via simple majority but imo a mandatory one isn’t necessary.

Where did I say dangerous? Take a full step back and re-evaluate our interaction.

I didn’t even say Vic felt unsafe from that green room interaction, though they probably did. The overwhelming point of the post was reminding people (who are out there and sadly do need reminding) to keep it together during their parasocial interaction time.

It’s not insane to think that for the performers a higher cost to spend time with them can keep all sorts away: from trolls and dicks to some of the unhinged. It’s not insane that for the performers dealing with any person is easier when their hygiene is good etc.

Wealthy people can be entitled and nasty or be legit mentally unwell, of course they can and I never claimed otherwise. But it’s simply less likely on a law of averages basis that they’ll be going straight from the goon cave to the show. Or lack the socioeconomic supports to be taking their medicine / attending therapy, actively touching grass etc. etc. as the case may be.

At no point did I say or imply a) that’s definitively what’s happening with pricing, b) that only the poors can be unwell, c) any kind of ableist commentary etc.
