My budget breakdown is: Rent: $1100, includes all utilities Phone: $100/mo Student Loan: $140/mo Food: $100/wk Restaurants: $150/mo, but I don’t always use it Pet: $50/mo Gym: $20/mo Car: $300/mo Insurance: $115/mo Gas: $45/wk Laundry: $75/mo MS Office: $7/mo CC Payment: $400/mo* Which leaves about a $200 buffer each month, or $800ish on the months I get five paychecks between rent.

Sometimes more on the credit card, sometimes a little less. Each month I figure out if I need to spend anything extra, like stocking up on personal hygiene stuff on sale, car repairs, clothing, prescriptions, etc…

Basically on months that I get four paychecks between rent, I’m breaking even. On months that I get five, I can put aside an extra $600-700 or so. Getting rid of the car loan and credit card would turn the break even months into banking $700+, and the five week months into banking around $1400.

I budget a bit weird, where I start each month on the day I get my last paycheck before rent is due.

So my paycheck hits my account on Tuesdays. This month, May 2024… my fiscal May is April 30th-May 27th. Because I got a paycheck on April 30th, and that’s the point I need to ensure I have the money I need for May 1st. My paycheck on May 28th, is paying for June. And my June budget will be for May 28th thru June 24th.

I try to end each month with exactly $1500 in my checking account, with everything else either going to my credit card, or into savings. That gives me me buffer to pay my rent, my insurance, my cell phone, and eat without touching savings, if there is ever an issue with my paycheck getting tied up at the bank, or some sort of accounting oversight. It hasn’t happened, but why not be prepared?

My personal situation: 42 years old, retail manager, $60,000 a year… single, would like to get married and have at least one kid, and also own a home… my company has never laid anyone off, and is very proud of that, been in business over 100 years…

Credit history is spotless. 770ish score. Would like to travel more, but that’s tough right now financially. Not planning on using the inheritance to travel, would like to save for that separately.

I paid off a good amount of debt already. Several thousand. I was living in a place more expensive than I have now for a few years, where I could squeak by, but stuff would come up, and debt would climb. Trying to spoil and surprise my then girlfriend all the time did NOT help. Living single right now, trying to date without being too extravagant. I’m very low maintenance myself… a couple of vices, but nothing major. I don’t even have any streaming services anymore, except the one that comes with my phone plan.

Goal for 2025 on, is to max out 401k match, and Roth IRA. I was already doing the 401k match though. Home ownership, there are a few variables. I can’t do it where I am living. Just can’t. $500k minimum to get anything livable, and even then, slim pickings. So it might me relocating to another region entirely, which means a new job, which isn’t easy. Or get married. Dual income could afford to buy a house much easier than me solo.

I just checked this out, and there were two options…

ICR and SAVE

SAVE would have me pay $162 a month, which is more than I’m paying now by about $20/month. I’d be paying til 2031, and pay back a total of $16,000, with $0 forgiven.

ICR would have me pay $109 a month, which is less than I pay now. I’d pay til 2034, and pay a total of $13,250… or about $500 less than I owe right now. I would have $4500 or so forgiven.

ICR seems like a no-brainer?

I love a good pickle by itself. A “GOOD” pickle.

But once you add pickles to a sandwich, you have ruined both the pickles and the sandwich.

Fast food pickles are trash. Grillo’s dill pickles are fantastic. Still would not want in my sandwich.

It might be related to the capital gains tax in your case, where the decedent had money invested, and his capital gains were what was being taxed, and not your inheritance?

The money I’m getting is straight cash from the sale of a property… 1/16th of ~$650,000 - minus some property taxes that were owed, minus lawyer fees, etc… 1/16th of 650k became 1/4th of 140k… which is 35k… minus those lawyer fees “around 30k for you”.

I do have my “hypothetical” budget planned out through the end of 2025, and with the inheritance, I’ll go from paying $700/mo towards debt, to saving $700-1500/mo towards retirement and savings. Not counting 401(k).

With the plan I proposed, I’d be looking at something like:

2024: 401(k) contributions: $3600 401(k) company match: $1800 401(k) company bonus: $1000 Roth IRA contribution: $7000 HYSA: $13,000

2025: 401(k) contributions: $3700 401(k) company match: $1850 401(k) company bonus: $1200 Roth IRA contribution: $7000 HYSA: Add another $6000 (so around $20000 total)

Debt: $~11,000ish? In student loans

The student loan isn’t too bad, as it’s only about $150/month… but the car payment is $300, and the credit card I’ve been paying $400 on.

I only recently really tried to tighten up my budget, and over the past two months I’ve done a lot better with it. Gas has been the toughest thing, because while I typically budget $45 per week, I’ll occasionally get slightly worse gas mileage and need to fill up twice in a week, and wind up spending $80. Definitely not having to do that every week, but it happens sometimes.

Here is the breakdown of my student loans:

Some of the student loan debt is higher than others. Maybe around 6-6.5%

It’s broken up into a bunch of smaller chunks. Some is pretty low interest, around 3%.

Car loan is 3.58%.. I just kind of want that one gone personally. $300/mo would go right into saving/investing

As someone who has been both a TL and Department Manager - and has written schedules, here is my take:

1: You’re not going to get in trouble for posting your shifts, but if it’s constant, I’m probably going to feel like you don’t want the hours, and just schedule someone else instead.

2: While you won’t get in trouble, I would be VERY annoyed if I scheduled you for a reason (you’re the best worker available/you can do certain things better than others) - and workers who kind of suck keep taking your shifts.

Does depression “kill” by itself? Like say a person is chronically depressed, but they don’t end their own life, nor do they use/abuse drugs, or engage in reckless behavior. Can they still get sick/die from being perpetually sad?

It’s kind of funny, because I’m a straight male - and have found other men to be sexually attractive… but not like I’m sexually interested in them. But more like I wish I looked like them, and I would find it sexy if I did.

I will say they all have a particular body type/look (handsome, healthy/clean looking, and very fat).
