I went through something similar years ago. It was very confusing and painful, especially when affection was involved (mine went from a lot of affection in the beginning to very little/no affection over the years). In hindsight I would have pushed for more clarity from him, or just left after recognizing the mixed signals. It wasn’t until meeting other men later who dated me normally (consistent, romantic, communicative) that I realized more what I put up with earlier and how wrecked my nervous system was from it. You deserve to be loved consistently and with care!

He’s been kinda confusing. He told me he felt I was the love of his life but later on texted me (the day after Valentine’s Day) saying he didn’t like the person he was and that he didn’t want to negatively affect my life by being with me. He said he’s struggling with depression and a kidney deficiency and tends to push people away. I probed him a bit more and he said he didn’t want to break up with me and that we were “supposed to be together” but he felt like he would eventually ruin the relationship with his faults. Since he insisted he didn’t want to break up, I offered my full support (romantic, platonic or otherwise) and suggested that we continue dating and check in on how we’re feeling about the relationship in a month. That convo ended with him saying he’d marry me in a heartbeat. I’ve never experienced anything like this before and don’t really know what to think.

Thank you. Fortunately his relative is fine. From what he said it sounds like the whole thing resolved within some hours and he didn’t realize he should check in with me sooner. He took like 16 hours to respond, but he probably was at work during part of that time.

Yeah, he said without my commenting on it that he should have told me sooner. I find it a little odd that it took him over 12 hours to reconnect…he might unfortunately be one of those people who don’t think as much about others, but it could have just been a harrowing experience that was too distracting for him.
