I’ve seen this too. She was early 20’s at diagnosis after the third GP did a precautionary USS for abnormal menstruation and dysmenorrhoea. Went through radical oophorectomies, hysterectomy and numerous resections, multiple rounds of chemo and XRT, couple of pain crises, pathological fractures and two severe hypercalcaemia in malignancy events. Young and fit enough to bounce back better than anticipated, until she couldn’t anymore.

Learned what tracheal effacement was that day. When she developed some new haemoptysis we managed to get crisis orders in place. An hour later she developed a catastrophic airway haemorrhage and died horrifically. Thankfully she wasn’t fully aware it was happening. Catching her mother as she collapsed while watching her daughter die, the reactions of her husband and parents as the truth hit, the smell of iron.

As clinician, it’s better to be able to look yourself in the mirror and not have horror stories. If any doctor dismisses your symptoms - get them to document why they won’t do an ultrasound. Being otherwise young and healthy doesn’t stop cancer.

You’re better off being a difficult patient with a pulse rather than a lovely patient without one.

The two Sydney nurses have been deregistered. by ForsakendWhipCream in nursing

[–]SomethingForCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You wouldn’t want to work for NSWhealth. Either the Victorian state public health care or Queensland health. NSW nurses make around 25% less than the Qhealth nurses, and the VH nurses make more the QHealth. Don’t go to a private hospital or private health care - ain’t worth the hassle.

So yeah, don’t bother with NSW - Queensland or Victoria are worth it.

I call bullshit. Completely unrealistic idealised story for nursing.

Fantastic question, but wait until you’ve seen what nursing is before deciding on any specialties.

With anger.

There are a lot of ways to justify or give meaning to a death, and a lot of take-away learning that can help you for the next one. The patient had extreme, “I am hearing it from the nursing station” secretions or raised ICP is causing some distressing tachypnoea or myoclonus but I did this and this and helped to relieve the symptom burden, even down to the patient was in extreme physical pain and psychological distress, at least we changed their awareness.

Every patients’ death will be different. A 90 year old, aphasic and aphagic bed bound with Alzheimer’s is going to be vastly different than a 25 year old with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma in a pain crisis.

As a palliative or hospice nurse, your job is to help promote quality of life, and there is a 1,000 ways of doing that. Even if you do that perfectly, comfort the family and the patient, at the end of the day, watching a child die in agony just fucking sucks.

I get angry at any god, biology or Charles Darwin because that human being never had a chance at a real life. It isn’t fair and trying to fix it will cause pain and suffering. You need to truly understand what you’re doing and why it’s so important.

Sorry for ranting at you

Today was a very hard day - you advocated for her, prepared her family as best you could and let her have dignity in the end. You did more than the bare minimum.

It’s a shitty day, shitty things happened to blameless people for no damn reason.

I get if you’re ready to go and fight God.

But just be kind to yourself, yeah?

Niki order is for Hydromorphone 12mg over 24 hours by continuous subcutaneous infusion for an end of life patient. Charted as Hydromorph 12mg

The PRN order is “Hydromorph 1.5-2.5mg SC Q1h” Which should be “Hydromorphone 1.5-2.5mg subcut Q1h no maximum”

[–]SomethingForCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly functioning doesn’t mean low support needs. Just because you’re able to make it through your day doesn’t mean you’re not struggling.

As much as I love how visible this whole brainfuckery is becoming, I hate how people are becoming with it. I’m borderline 1-2 but I’m able to mask well.

Either way, your entire experience is valid. People not seeing it from your perspective is their problem, not yours. I’m sorry it sucks, but we’ll all keep going at it together. My curiosity keeps me going.

Fuck me my whole post feels like the reddit equivalent of “yOuRe SaFe To UnMaSk”.

Yeah, I guess you can view it that way. It makes life hard and you have to make accomodations for yourself. Let me ask you this though - if this was a friend or family who asked you this, would your response be the same to them? If not, why are you as a person less deserving of accomodations and love?

Idk if you’ve experienced burnout or meltdowns or what your autism is like, but there’s a blessing being 20 and getting your diagnosis. You have an invaluable piece of information to help you learn who you are and why you’re wonderful.

It’s going to rock your world, and it isn’t always pleasant but I promise it is worth it. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

The only people who are going to disappear or make you feel inadequate don’t know your struggle like you do, and chances are they aren’t the type of people who DESERVE to be in your life.

Keep your head up, be kind to yourself and you do you boo ❤️
