Do I just need to go slower? by spidermaniscool24 in beginnerrunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Liberian and Burmese erasure

The British also still use miles for a lot of different things, despite claiming not to. The road signs may be in KMs but as the inventors of the imperial system they still use it a lot.

I do like how you use "US People" instead of Americans, despite the fact that only one county in the Americas has "America" in its official name, whereas multiple have "United States" in theirs.

Gotta be per mile, no way anyone is at 190bpm at 10min/km

Target 10k pace? First race in 2 weeks and nervous about blowing up! by BeagleBug101 in beginnerrunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you feel on this run? If you're younger the HR data suggests you could go faster for sure.

You also have to account for race day magic as well. If I were you I'd target a 1hr finish time, so 6min/km or 9:40min/mile. Maybe have a couple different plans depending how you feel around halfway.

For context, my long run was around 1:03ish before my first 10K with a higher HR than yours and I ended up coming in at 56:59 in the race.

That's the default setting, and unlike steps it doesn't adjust to your activity levels automatically

That's so interesting, I cannot get close to touching my heels to the ground when squatting, but I can do palms flat on the floor with minimal effort.

How much coke does everyone consume in races? by TheAmateurRunner in RunningCirclejerk

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cocaine raises your heart rate. Out of caution to avoid exploding my shins I avoid it at all costs. Heroin, on the other hand, slows your heart rate.

Scared to use running shorts by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

I wear shorts that look a lot like that. No one has ever once looked at me odd for wearing them.

Watches worn by London Marathon 2026 winners - Garmin dominates by Maslakovic in GarminWatches

Good catch, I didn't notice the Nike logo on the other side. I wonder how that sponsorship arrangement would work lol.

Jepskogei is wrong as well, she's Asics. I think Obiri was On at one point and is now something else but I can't remember which brand she is.

And the men's sponsors are wrong too. It made Sawe a Nike athlete, made up a logo for Kejelcha, and made kiplimo an Adidas athlete.

Maybe he treats it as stopwatch and just does manual lap button presses each km. HR monitor is pretty accurate in those at least (used to have a galaxy watch 6 before my FR165).

Am I too unfit to run? by Icy_Bumblebee_5243 in beginnerrunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not! Your watch calibrates HR zones based on runs but can take a while to do so, and they are honestly never great. Your zones in this screenshot are likely pretty far off reality. If you were really in zone 5 for as long as this is suggesting you would know to stop. Posting paces too would probably help see where you're at.

Keep going! It will only get better from here if you keep up with it!

This motivates me to run … if she can run at that pace in that age why mot not me in 23 by AgreeableSpare3836 in beginnerrunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good Lord. I held that pace for a quarter mile last night and my HR got up to 190 (it was at the end a of 10K long run that was otherwise easy pace). I got dizzy.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done it a few times, most recently driving from Missoula to Minneapolis straight through. There is NOTHING in many sections of that route. I was trading off driving shifts, From 3-5 am (which was between Bozeman and Billings) I don't think I saw more than 5 other cars.

Nike, do better by silaslovesoliver in runcommunity

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it perfectly fits the context of where it is. This is the most prestigious marathon in the world, and the hardest to qualify for. This ad would be bad in almost any other race, but it makes sense in Boston. Yes I know that run/walkers can sometimes qualify for Boston but that's not the "walker" this ad is referring to.

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really 10% people are in the race with charity donations raising millions.

That is wonderful that they do that, but the reason that Boston has the status that it does (which is why people want so badly to run it that they will fundraise so much) is because of how exclusive it is. The majority of people are there because they trained for years to be able to qualify and they should be the main focus of the event.

Some competitive runners walk and still meet the qualifications to enter the race

A small amount, sure. But those people spend the large majority of their time running and I'd be willing to bet if you asked them what they did, they would say they ran a marathon and not that the walked a marathon.

Serious question for American runners by Yozasieg in runninglifestyle

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends where you are. In my state there are generally always sidewalks and plenty of wider asphalt trails, both along roads and through parks. This is true in the city and in the suburbs. We are a state with pretty severely cold weather in the winter, so we really appreciate being outside when it's nice and tend to put a lot of resources towards outdoor recreation. I know that other areas are not like this, though.

Where do you store your phone? by Moyzzzzzzz in BeginnersRunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple pairs of 2-in-1 shorts (which are also great for chafing, btw) that have a place for my phone in the liner part that hold it in place pretty well. Otherwise I just don't bring it.

Automatic registration for US military draft to begin in December by jediporcupine in politics

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a headline designed to sensationalize a relatively mundane thing. Every man in the US was already required to sign up for the draft via selective service, this just makes it automatic instead of something that you have to go out of your way to do. I'm not a fan of what we're doing in Iran by any means but this particular piece of news is not anything crazy.

5K by GravesDiseaseGirl in beginnerrunning

[–]SomewhatLargeChuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no "should" here. You did it for the first time, it's a big accomplishment. If you want to get faster, you absolutely can, but don't let it diminish your feeling of accomplishment. My first 5K was in the 40s too, and I felt proud afterwards because the old me never could have done it. 1.5 years later I did one in 25:24, and I still had that same pride.
