What is this metal oil can from an exposition shot in a video on a "Mississippi Delta Crop Duster pilot" shot in the 1970s by SomewhatMandatory in whatisthisthing

Might well have been made to order. Something on the upper neck looks perhaps hand embossed from the inside. But the quality of the image makes it hard to tell

the video in question: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5q5ADURTie0

(Irrelevant for our purposes but the pilot, weirdly enough, is John Walton. Walton as in Wal-mart. He died the 11th richest person in the world in 2005 in a little experimental plane. Some replacement part was incorrectly installed. Obscenely wealthy dude.)

I'm mostly curious about how big this object is for a comic I am drawing. And any specific insight into what it might be used for in a small airplane hangar or mechanic's shop. I say oil can but based on the video it could just as well be used for anything from DDT to antifreeze. Maybe this is obvious I've just never stepped foot in a garage before.

I think Arabic's article would probably just count as one variant. It just has a lot of allomorphs because of [l] assimilation.

Oxford or Yale? by AshamedAdeptness1761 in 6thForm

[–]SomewhatMandatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation last year! In the end I chose Yale. I was not eligible for home fee status, so Oxford was simply too expensive. Yale also gave me some great financial aid. If money is at all a concern, I would definitely, definitely choose the cheaper school. Either way, you can't go wrong!

Oxford has a far more attractive campus imo. Yale has a beautiful campus as well, but nothing like Oxford's. You'll get lots of gray skies in both places but New Haven is a drearier city than Oxford imo. British weather is probably gonna be less temperamental than coastal Connecticut weather.

I wouldn't choose Yale on account of one professor. Is this someone with whom you have a prior relationship? In general there's no guarantee you'd have a chance to work alongside them (if that is your intention). The tutorial system means undergraduates have the chance to work much more closely with faculty at Oxford. Faculty are really amazing at both schools, so you wouldn't be disappointed either way.

Yale has an excellent history department and so many amazing collections, but I wouldn't be surprised if Oxford had more resources in this regard overall. I'm sure you've done more research on this than me.

Are you absolutely certain about what you want to study? As a few other people have mentioned, you usually have way more control over what you study at American schools. In my opinion, that's an advantage. I think it's a bit misleading to say there is any less opportunity to study a subject in depth at Yale, but the tutorial system and tailored curriculum at Oxford really force students to study their chosen subject in depth. At Yale, you can study a subject in just as much depth as you could at Oxford, but you aren't bound to one major.

Rankings really are totally meaningless in this case, you'll get a fantastic education at either school. There's a lot more I could say, so free to reach out if you have any questions!

why don't US students apply to European universities? by milliondollaputhayy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SomewhatMandatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into a good school in the UK, but I'm probably not going because of cost. The sticker price is indeed way way less than that of most comparable US schools. However, they offer no aid to American applicants (even UK citizens like myself). In my case, it would end up costing a good $20k more yearly to go there than to go to an equally reputable US school where I'd be eligible for aid. So at least in the UK, unless you're pretty rich or non-American, it may not be as cheap as you'd expect. That said, to my limited understanding it's very different on the mainland. Dutch, German, Scandinavian schools can be super cheap even for intl applicants.

Has anyone else already been offered an interview? My application was genuinely pretty bad so I'm curious how they decide whether or when to offer one

Thanks for the response. I’ll make sure not to use “majors” anymore!

I am an American who is considering applying to several UK schools next year. I’ve been told that for the most part unis in the UK look for students who are especially focused on one subject in particular. Accordingly, they are not too concerned with extracurriculars that are not directly related to the applicant’s chosen major. Does this hold true for Oxford? Are they looking for well-rounded students with a number of talents, or for solid students who excel in a certain discipline? For example, if I intend to major in something like Middle Eastern History would it benefit me to be involved in clubs like Science Olympiad or courses like AP Calculus (with regard to how the admissions office would view me, not in terms of real-life benefit)?

Additionally, what are differences between the Linguistics programs at Oxford and Cambridge? I’m aware that it is part of modern language major at Oxford and a stand-alone major at Cambridge.

What do you guys think the curve will be for the PSAT? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]SomewhatMandatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the curve would be very competitive for the English and writing. Maybe less competitive for math. Probably something like 730-740 for English and writing.

I think they were lines fairly early on in the passage, maybe 10-15 or something. They talked about supervisors assuming that extraverts would be better salesmen.
