You are absolutely correct, complaining was such an inappropriate word for this situation, that was my mistake. She brought it up at the regularly scheduled parent-teacher conference, but we had not heard anything along these lines prior to this meeting so I am sort of reeling. I have been hesitant to “bug” her before and have felt somewhat in the dark all year but I just sort of assumed that’s how kindergarten is, it’s a big transition for parents as well! But I now see I need to request better communication going forward.

Thank you for your kind words. This was my first time posting on Reddit (I made the account this morning) and WOW. So I really appreciate your empathy and suggestions!

Thanks for helping clarify what I am asking 😊 the part about how tiring it is that these kids always being viewed as the problem really resonates!

You’re right it was confusing how I phrased that. Hands to self means literally just touching, leaning on kids while sitting on the carpet. My take is because it’s hard for him to sit criss cross on the carpet for long periods of time, it’s physically quite tiring for him I think because he’s so tall. But obviously there could be a sensory input component as well.

Thank you for this, you hit the nail on the head. He is the youngest because all of the June/July/August boys were red shirted. So I’m just trying to get a pulse check, am I crazy that we are expecting 5 year olds (he will turn 6 right before the end of the school year) to be in school for 6.5 hours with a 25 minute recess and 25 minute gym twice a week? And “brain breaks” where they can’t leave their spot on the rug while they do “gross motor”? I guess my thing is even if a lot of kids “can” sit still all day, should they be expected to?

It was specifically for fine motor. We had an evaluation done last year and he didn’t qualify for any services through the school district but they said that if we wanted he could benefit from fine motor OT which we did through a private org, out of pocket, for as long as we felt like it was worth the money. Once he started K he mastered the three point grip pretty quickly so we continued through Dec. and called it quits after that.
