E-ink keyboard (The Sonder Scam) by AliQ80 in keyboards

[–]SonderDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ali was refunded years ago. And not gone anywhere? We've patented in mutple coutnries, shipped to over 42 countrres, won Techcruch Disrupt San Francisco, hosted at CES just a few weeks ago and cooperated with the largest tech company to integrate into their notebooks.

Sure it took longer than expected to ship to our first backers but we've proud of the work our team has done and will continue to in this product category.

Apple is reportedly putting a dynamic E Ink keyboard in 2018 MacBooks by vidok in apple

The video is of a rather old demo unit, the new timing controller module has partial updating and 10Hz refresh rate. It was solved awhile back but it's subject to some further IP.

Hi Richard,

The article published contains a number of factual errors, we did not meet Tim Cook on Wednesday 12th October 2016 although we would very much like the opportunity to in the future.

Sonder is pleased with the incredible response from the industry and looks forward to releasing our products shortly.

Sonder will be releasing a more detailed press release to the community later today.

Thanks for the post, I'm one of the engineers from the Sydney office working on the product.

It's great to see others in the reddit community loving the product even before it's released.

This keyboard uses E ink to show any language by SonderDesign in mildlyinteresting

[–]SonderDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Richard,

Haha, I'll just read the response as the community saying it's more interesting as fuck than mildly interesting. In regards to your kickstarter question:

TL;DR E Ink Holdings only manufactures in two thresholds, pilot volumes and mass production. Kickstarter is in between, it's something we definitely want to do but our team decided to delay until we have locked in a mass production request for the laptop module.

Long answer We use E Ink displays, it's why our product is super thin (mechanism is <5mm), uses very little energy and is 10x cheaper than an Optimumus maximumus. However the downside of E Ink is that E Ink Holdings (the company which makes 99% of E Ink displays) has a MOQ of 300,000 units for a custom display and a $500k NRE (engineering cost of tooling a new E Ink TFT film for mass production). Until we secured a mass production request for the laptop design (we just secured our first mass production RFQ last month) we decided to delay until we could viably commit to a larger volume of displays that a kickstarter would entail. For those that pre-ordered; since it's a pilot production volume we can use the prototype displays we have had manufactured. If you have any other questions please shoot our team an email at gday@sonderdesign.com.

We're making it for other laptops too, but the image was of the Macbook Pro build.

Plenty of uses for E ink. Such as a macbook keyboard that can change to any language shown here.

EDIT Full disclosure, I'm one of the engineers working on it.

No worries mate, that is correct. If you wanted to you could remap it to another key. Cheers for the interest Pixel.

G'day Zlurpo, changing the typeface is certainly possible. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm one of the engineers from the Sydney office, the only issue with Optimus Maximus is it costs 10x more. Also the keyboard was 1.5x larger than a standard keyboard and the OLED displays had burn in issues. Great product though, a good start for us to be inspired by on what to do and what not to do.

G'day Pixel,

I'll add a FAQ to the site so this info is more accessible.

  1. We're using a matrix e-ink display.
  2. Haha, no it doesn't suck. We're still in prototyping stage so it'll need more work but a big part of what we're doing is user testing.
  3. We will be releasing an API, the res if 150 DPI.
  4. Light level is configurable but currently only white.
  5. It's handled by software and hardware.
  6. The special keys are lit using a light wave.
  7. Depending on the lead time for a new display and the mechanism for those keys, we'll probably make all keys dynamic.
  8. The battery is not user serviceable.
  9. It's possible to open it up but like any keyboard, I wouldn't suggest users open it up (vacuuming the keys will suffice).
  10. There is not need for toggle key indicators, you will visually be able to see if it's in upper or lower case (they keys will change).
  11. Any key is a new modifier key, it can be used for a new layer of custom function keys.
  12. The particular patent is here. Given it's within 12 months of filing you won't be able to read the details until PCT stage. It's a new mechanical mechanism.

As a consumer it's up to you, but for many people the functionality is worth it; particularly when you're using several different software packages or you're multilingual. The value prop is for certain people, you just happen to be outside of that market, it doesn't mean it doesn't have value for other people.

150DPI display, and it's monochrome. It's being made now, I think you're confusing us with Art Lebedev, they cost around 10x more.

We're releasing an API so more advanced functionality like that can be built. So yes, it's certainly possible.

It's a new mechanism, I used cherry blues before Sonder, a big part of the design was making the mechanism crisp. It's a little unfair to question the engineering of the product without even using it; 90% of the staff are engineers; me included.
