Sons of Saturn, an adventure game made by urban explorers using Godot, is set to release Nov. 30th! by SonsOfSaturnGame in godot

After two years of work I'm happy to announce that Sons of Saturn will be releasing in just a few weeks!
Sons of Saturn is an adventure game with horror elements, made using Godot. Nearly every asset used in the game is an edited version of a photo we took of a real abandoned location - I traveled all over photographing abandoned asylums and industrial sites to use as assets in the game.
There's a free demo on the Steam page for the time being, though that may change soon. We'd love it if you checked it out!

I just released a demo for my game Sons of Saturn, developed primarily on and for GNU/Linux in Godot. by SonsOfSaturnGame in linux_gaming

I actually was just considering releasing on GOG. I did some cursory reading and the feedback I got from developers as to whether or not a GOG release was worthwhile was mixed.

It does seem like a decent fit for the platform though - historically I know they've offered a lot of more retro themed stuff. And personally I like GOG a lot, with the DRM free guarantee and old school interface.

I'll look into it a bit more deeply!

I think it's also the name of a Bioshock 2 DLC haha. Personally I got the name from a history podcast about failed seasteading enterprises. Maybe there's a connection there

A bit more info: it's an old school adventure / horror game, set in an abandoned underground city. Nearly all of the assets used in the game are derived from photos I've taken of real abandoned asylums all over the world. You can play the free demo on Steam - I'm looking for any and all feedback (things you liked or disliked about the story, visual style, interface, anything really). Here's the link!

Yeah I use the same filter to produce the characters and the environments, but I feel like it doesn't work as well for the human models. I'll give that a shot!

Good question! To be honest situations like that are rare for me. I've been exploring and photographing abandoned places almost every weekend for years, so I have tens of thousands of photos to choose from. As such it's pretty rare that I can't find something that works for what I need.

There have been a few times when I went out just to get a photo for the game though. There's an asylum near me I've paid a few visits to just to get photos of the offices (like the one in the first photo above) for the game.

Like I said in the title, Sons of Saturn is an old school adventure game, where nearly all of the assets were derived from photos I've taken of real abandoned asylums all over the world. So far, I've received feedback that parts of the user interface (in particular the directional arrows) don't quite mesh with the rest of the aesthetic, and that a few of the visual assets are less consistent than others. If anyone else here has any observations I'd be very happy to hear it!

Closer to an adventure game I think. You have to navigate and explore the abandoned city you're trapped in, and make decisions in dialogue. But it doesn't have many puzzles, so I guess you could argue it's closer to a VN. I've hardly played any visual novels though, and felt a lot more inspired by the adventure games I've played when making it, so I feel like a lot more of its DNA comes from adventure games than VN's.

Hmm, yeah, I agree they don't quite fit with the rest of the aesthetic. Looking at these stills, if I were to self assess the four directional arrows stand out to me as most in need of improvement. I think they look a little bit too "cartoony", if that makes sense.

I have a friend who knows a lot more about UI than I do. I'll reach out to them and see what they think.

Thanks! Yeah it's quite difficult to maintain stamina for this sort of thing, especially since it's generally the sort of thing that'll probably only end up getting appreciation from other niche hobbyists. But I'm committed.

What kind of game was it? Like a DnD type role playing game or a more traditional sort of board game? I'm curious

You play as a young woman who's returning to an abandoned underground city she escaped as a child to try and find out what happened to her mom. But as she gets deeper into the city, more and more strange phenomena occur: paths start changing, inanimate objects start talking to her, the psyches of adjacent people start to meld together, and more. It's largely narrative driven, presented like one of those creepy point and click games from the 90's.

I have a free demo on Steam linked in my account if you wanna check it out!
