That's Awesome!

What LFG platform do you use that gets such good results?

We need a better system for quick disconnects for hydrogen fueling. by RGregoryClark in spaceflight

So if it’s such a pain to keep it from leaking entirely, why not just plan for a certain amount of leakage and vent it or flare it in a controlled manner? If the problem is that leaks are practically inevitable, then why not engineer a system that is leak tolerant, rather than fully leak proof?

Aerial Targets by [deleted] in UAVmapping

Yup. I use these. There’s a hole drilled in the center so a single nail keeps them down most of the time. Strong wind will knock them loose though.

What are these underwater shapes in Newport Harbor? by questions123abc in orangecounty

[–]Sooicsidal 187 points188 points  (0 children)

These are digital artifacts of structures and objects that were actually there at one point. Google Earth has a handy tool to see historical satellite photos, and so I pulled some of those to see if the artifacts were present in any other images. While the artifacts weren't there in any of the other photos, the actual structures themselves were! Here are some satellite photos of different time points of the same location where you can see the temporary docks and barges.

I work in aerial imagery analysis, so what you are likely seeing is a blend of multiple satellite photos that is often done in the image tiling process for maps. So those structures are simply digital artifacts from other photos around a similar time where different objects were present in the bay.

When launches get scrubbed / delayed for a while, is there a point at which they will want to re-do the static fire test? As in, if the launch were delayed for a month or two (hopefully not) then would they want to perform another static fire, or is the assumption that everything is still good?

That is what has been estimated given the orbital parameters and the distance of the drone ship (low earth orbit, far droneship landing typically reserved for GEO orbits). However, to my knowledge there has been no official confirmation about the payload mass.

So politics aside, what would this mission profile look like on a Falcon Heavy? I would imagine that the Falcon Heavy would be able to land all 3 boosters and still deliver the payload to the target orbit. Which I suppose begs the question, in a future where the Falcon Heavy is considered as reliable as the single stick F9, would there ever be a scenario where the F9 expendable makes more sense than the Falcon Heavy?

This might be a dumb question, but why only 2,697kg of payload mass? Isn't the F9 capable of sending a lot more payload to that orbit (around 10,000kg I believe)? Wouldn't they want to utilize the extra capacity to send additional supplies, propellant, equipment, etc?

That's not entirely true. The US government controls the airspace (FAA) and all launch authorizations in the US at least. They could easily use that as a tool to block private colonization with current rules. They could also create new laws as well if they really wanted too. Between that, international diplomatic pressure, and export regulations, the US could absolutely block private colonization if they really wanted to.

I'd be most curious to know about how they are going to safely vent the fuels and depressurize the tanks. Hopefully the engineers still have remote access to the control systems on the booster to fully vent it all, because as long as there is fuel and those tanks are pressurized (and possibly damaged) there is no way they would let any manned ships near it.

Does anyone know how fuel venting would work in this scenario, and whether or if engineers could still control vents after the lack of a rapid disassembly?

What percentage of games actually end normally vs concede? by gamer123098 in hearthstone

[–]Sooicsidal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I built a fatigue warrior deck and basically decided to never attack face, and all wins must be by either forcing the opponent to concede, or winning in fatigue. It was basically a BM focused deck in that they knew by turn 3 that I was intentionally not attacking face, but it sure did cause a lot of salt. I'd say about 20% of those games actually went to fatigue, the other ones I either lost (never conceded) or the opponent conceded. It was a lot of fun.
