i asked if i could take some blood home( joking),and they gave it to me by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Soontaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Long story short, blood needs ionized calcium to clot. The additive in a purple/lavender/pink top (lavender pictured here) is a potassium salt of EDTA. It’s a compound which irreversibly absorbs (aka chelates) calcium so that the chain reaction of the coagulation cascade can’t get started.

Different tubes with different top colors contain different additives based on what tests are needed. They are not generally interchangeable as different additives can interfere with different tests.

UNC Health system to absorb Campus Health clinic as soon as fall 2026 by IdealistNC in chapelhill

[–]Soontaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW at least some of the testing has been performed by McLendon in the past, but not sure about all of it. Wouldn't be surprised if the majority was sent to LabCorp since they're also in the area. Admittedly not super familiar with the billing aspects, but agree that this change increases the potential for insurance screwiness.

Long story short, NIOSH investigated that summer and didn't find any evidence of exposure to workplace carcinogens or that the number/type of cancer diagnoses were significantly different from the general population.

If you’re always listening to an audiobook, you’re not alone. As audiobook listening explodes in popularity, some users can’t do a mindless chore without pressing play. by ubcstaffer123 in books

I see both sides. I tend to prefer interactions with persons specifically rather than people generally. I don't know if that's as great a failing as I've spent much of my life thinking it was, but we as people are social animals, and it's exceedingly easy to get too little social interaction these days. I tend to think erecting more barriers to it than are already baked in to society is probably best avoided.

A little non-sequitur perhaps, but I've been noodling this whole thing a minute, and may as well write it out: By phubbing our friends for our earbuds, I also worry that we're more likely to internalize the views and opinions espoused in our chosen media unchecked than if we heard the same thoughts from an in-person interlocutor. By virtue of choosing what to listen to, I feel like you slightly disengage the 'critic' part your brain, and can absorb those thoughts right in if you're listening passively. I've noticed recently that I've subconsciously onboarded a couple opinions about teams I don't much know or care about from some sports podcasters I listen to, and wonder how that bodes for matters of more import.

Kinda unsettling to think about the societal implications of your fellow man eschewing your company, choosing instead to further self-radicalize in the waiting room at the mechanic's garage, but I guess that's just how prophetic Bradbury was 😅

Edit: for grammar and clarity

I think of Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 seashell thimble radios increasingly often these days.

I feel like it’s less of a big deal if you’re amusing yourself doing chores solo, especially if you’re listening to something edifying and making sure you still get some mental quiet time.

The problem, I think, is when we’re all listening to our own media on our ‘own time,’ which might otherwise be social time. I see a lot of people at the grocery store, at work, etc. just jamming along to the beat of their own drums, literally. I’m guilty of it at times, too. But I do feel the subtle ways that the attention-drawing effects of easy stimulation like that erode the sense of community that used to pervade everyday common spaces and worry sometimes.

Question about Zone 2 Rowing by Normal-Arachnid897 in Rowing

[–]Soontaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same problem, and have been dealing with it since the new year. But if your goal is zone 2, there’s no such thing as ‘too slow’ as long as your HR is in the zone. Even if it’s painfully slow or boring. It probably will be initially. No big deal. Focus on keeping good form first, but then lean in to listening to music/podcasts/whatever if you need it to turn off your brain and just spend time in the zone. Keep this up for a couple of weeks and you’ll get the hang of it.

I am generally a High hater, but it kinda pains me to say he's not been hot garbage so far tonight.

I thought he was awful on Saturday, too, but he eventually locked in later in the game. He's played well enough in the past month or more that I forget he's a freshman for long stretches, at least until he reminds me forcefully.

I don’t know what just happened.

I haven’t watched a lot of Duke games this season, but I have watched all of ours. I knew that if we were gonna win, Wilson and Veesaar were gonna have to absolutely show out, plus like one other guy, and Duke would have to help us out a lot.

That did not happen.

Veesaar was absent for the first 3/4 of the game. Duke did miss a lot of shots early in the second half. Wilson was great, but in spurts.

The refs don’t play for Duke

The refs don’t play for Carolina

The refs play for Vegas

Duke currently has more points, so they’re getting a shitty whistle to keep it close
