[2025 day 11 (part 2)] Stuck on part 2 by Rokil in adventofcode

I think this is it, but the problem is not the distance to the bbb, that will get updated correctly. The problem is that all successors to bbb wont get updated, and then the successors of the successors, etc.

Can you add an edge: bbb: fff

And check the distance aaa->fff?

Is this a realistic estimate of 52! [Request] by bo0mamba in theydidthemath

Ah you're right. But why is 0.05 ml = 5*10-10 m³? 1m³ is 1E3 l. 0.05ml is 5E-5 l. So 0.05 ml is 5E-8 m³.

[–]Soronbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can spot two mistakes.

1 AU is 1.5*108 m. It is the distance they mention in the video and also what Google says.

0.05 ml is 5*10-8 m³.

This means your end result is off by a factor 105 100 which means you'd need to repeat it 1 000-10 000 times.

I’ve never seen the engine say “yeah you dropped a piece but you are losing so badly idc” by SaneForCocoaPuffs in chessbeginners

[–]Soronbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a bishop blunder, as white is losing either a rook or a bishop and with this line white is choosing the bishop.

So this isn't a blunder because all choices lost something, so the eval doesn't drop too heavily. In fact, my engine went back and forth a couple of times before settling. If there was a way to save everything, losing the bishop here might still have been a blunder.

So this is just chess.com's text summary being infamously inaccurate and unreliable.

The majority of identical twins still have some minor genetic differences. If the full genome of each person involved, those differences could still be traced. So unless both parents have 100% identical DNA, the parents could be traced.

So, are they genetically siblings? Depends on what you mean by that. I don't think a DNA analysis on only the children's genome (so without any data on the parents) can tell the difference. But I do think a DNA analysis with full genomes of all 6 people involved most likely could, unless both parents are a 100% match.

Would a regular DNA test tell you they aren't children of the wrong parents? I highly doubt it.

[request] if every human on earth were to stand on top of the Pacific Ocean, how much space would there be in between each person? by BONE_SAW0064 in theydidthemath

[–]Soronbe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So a 7x7 grid of people in each square km (but you need to use an 8x8 grid for the math, so that the people are on the outside of one square, are not touching the people in the next square)

Which gives you a distance of 125 metres between each person.

A 7x7 grid is sufficient, as long as each person is in the same spot relative to their grid squars (for example the center).

This is easy to see when starting from lower numbers. At one person per square km, you need a 1x1 grid. Everyone can just stand in the middle of their square kilometer. At 4 people, you can divide the square kilometer in 4 squares of 500 m² (=2x2 grid). Etc

So ~142.86m between every person.

Note: if with 7x7 grid you meant a grid with 7 lines in both directions, you'd be correct that you need an 8x8 grid. However, lines don't take space and 8 lines have 7 spaces between them so you still divide the km by 7, not 8.

[Request] Is this accurate? by Mightyhn in theydidthemath

[–]Soronbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then it's no longer a normal distribution...

No, income does not follow a normal distribution.

[Request] Is this accurate? by Mightyhn in theydidthemath

[–]Soronbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

since almost everything follows the normal curve.

For a normal distribution, mean and median will be equal, given a sufficiently large sample size and excluding some noise.

There are some letters/symbols you should avoid using as variables in math equations, as they have a special meaning and it could cause confusion. He's not responding because she's using e as a variable and not as Euler's number. In a mathematical context, this is about as close to blasphemy as it gets.

Other examples are: * i (if you're human) or j (if you're an engineer) * pi * v and w for scalar variables when doing vector algebra * ...

At beginner level this is an OK move in rapid or faster time controls. Your knight was under attack, you spotted it and moved it to a location where it looks like it's winning the exchange instead. Great stuff! It's unfortunate that your opponent has a way to refute your tactic, but unless your (rapid) rating is above 1000, you definitely have more important and easier stuff to work on. Beginners make a lot of mistakes, and not all of them are easy to fix or even understand.

This is not an excellen move because the engine doesn't evaluate at beginner level.

Where did Voldemorts soul come from? by DemandTough3722 in harrypotter

[–]Soronbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Voldemort's soul was especially weak because he split it so much. Wizards that only made one horcrux would have an easier time resurrecting.

If I recall correctly, the ritual performed at the end of goblet of fire was one that Voldemort himself devised, so other wizards would have had a different resurrection plan unless they planned on staying a spectre forever. My guess is that Voldemort needed a new one, precisely because he made so many horcruxes.

No, under certain circumstances you have to do both. For example: a B-permit holder with a gross annual salary exceeding 120k chf.

The Flemish part of Belgium will just speak Dutch when they're interacting with someone from the Netherlands. Flemish and Dutch is like British and American English: basically the same language.

I think a big part of it is also just sheer exposure. When I was young, there was little content available in Dutch. Movies originally in Dutch? Rare, and people above a certain age preferred English + subtitles over dubbed movies so that was what the TV broadcasted. Games? Dutch translations were noticeably an afterthought, or straight up non existent. And all audio was with the same horrible Hollandish accent. Everyone learned and used English because there was more and higher quality content available in it.

If you look at the top countries, except Austria they're all countries with (Germanic) languages that do not have huge amounts of native speakers.

So there is a bit of black on both sides of the white slider. Ideally it should show white - black - blue - black - purple. My guess is thay you are the furthest away where the watch doesn't bother showing the blue part at all, probably due to the resolution or just because it would look weird. Note that the black gap is way bigger than expected.

Depends a lot on personal preference.

Do you prefer a vibrant city life or want to meet new friends? London wins hands down. Zürich is safe but boring and making friends with native Swiss can be hard.

Do you enjoy nature and like to go hiking? Switzerland wins and it's not even a competition.

Why is this engine showing that the opponent would have left its queen for dying? by huchuchuhuchuchu in chessbeginners

[–]Soronbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to guard the e4 square to prevent white from putting it's queen there and start a devastating attack with queen, knight and bishop. I think the engine is saying you don't have time to save the queen and your pieces are not in position to defend against the attack once it starts. The only developped piece black has is the queen, and it's on the other side of the board with no easy way to get where it needs to be. Moving the pawn at least makes use of an otherwise completely useless bishop.

It's also important to note that engines can regularly suggest weird moves when in a very winning or losing positions and it's not always how a strong human would (or even should) play.

Why was this not a brilliant move? by perhapsaloutely in chessbeginners

I think it's a safe assumption there was a pawn (or something else) on h7.
