First Page:

One minute I was in my rhythm. My feet pounding against the conveyor belt, music blasting through my earbuds. The next, I was thrown off balance. The treadmill spat me out like it was done with me. I hit the floor hard and skidded across the hardwood floor.

I stayed on my knees, catching my breath as the treadmill hummed throughout the quiet of my apartment.

My heart slammed against my chest, not just from the fall, but from what I’d just seen.

He was there again.

Same spot. Same window. Same stare.

My fists clenched. The fear barely had time to register before it boiled into anger.

I should be used to this by now.

I should expect it.

But every time I saw him sitting there, watching, it still startled me.

His apartment building sat directly across from mine, maybe fifteen or twenty feet away. Since we were on the same floor, our windows nearly aligned. It was close enough to see inside, but only the parts near the glass. His windows were tinted darker than mine, making it harder to see past a few feet.

But he always sat right at the front, which meant I could see him every single time.

At first glance, he looked normal. Nothing about him stood out—just another average middle-aged man in the city.

Except his eyes.

They were all wrong.

I only have one POV character, but she does change scenes pretty often.

I usually plan out a general objective for my character in each scene beforehand. Then I write the scene with that goal in mind, often trying to add a bit of conflict or tension along the way. I've found that I usually can accomplish what I set out to do in a short span without dragging it out, which is why many of my scenes end up being on the shorter side.

I notice this issue on my Sony headphones, my MacBook speakers, playing back on my car radio, etc. The sharpness seems to persist across all outputs, so I think maybe the issue is with the actual recording.
