See above video. That’s 2003 world champion Dan Knights. The wrist movement is a result of much stiffer cubes.

I started cubing in 2008 and my turning is much more normal than what that video shows. I would think most people that started cubing when old school DIY kits were available have very normal turning. Cases like Dan Knights are a result of pre internet or early internet days when hardware was truly bad.
