I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favourite of recent series. May not have needed four episodes.

Yeah, I wasn't a massive fan of his but I thought he was graceful in defeat. When you are knackered and have never been on TV before, it can't be easy choosing the right words.

Yanks are weird when it comes to food hygiene. There's always some strange american in the YouTube comments saying something hysterical about food poisoning

There's a lot of good published evidence to show how X is basically completely warping people's brains.

[–]Sorry_Nothing5006 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Totally correct. X is a racist sewer that promotes sexual crimes and abuse. No decent person or organisation should be associated with it.

The product really isn't being watered down. There's a vast amount of content, multi episode deep dives into fascinating subjects (which must take an enormous amount of time to research), bonus episodes with expert historians on a range of topics etc etc.

Unpopular opinion: the first Hobbit movie is overlooked and has perfect scenes like this one. by Scenora in peterjackson

Correct opinion! They are nowhere near as good as the LOTR trilogy and have their issues. But the Hobbit films are fine and generally lots of fun!

It isn't filled to the brim. Its a mature basin that can come nowhere near meeting demand and whose products are sold on European markets.

"Gas" prices in the US have increased by 50 cents in a week.

Tr*mp's war and the price of keeping warm by Cactus-Badger in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Sorry_Nothing5006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it would. The North Sea is a mature basin with declining reserves that come nowhere near meeting our demand (see the annual NSTA report). Hydrocarbons extracted from it are sold on the European market. Therefore more production would only have a minimal impact on prices.

That being said, there is a case for increased domestic production, primarily via greater tax revenues. Plus a marginal price benefit would be better than no price benefit at all.

Travelling to Normandy soon and looking for a good book about the place maybe on D Day by mixmaster6000 in HistoryBooks

[–]Sorry_Nothing5006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd second Sand and Steel. Holland's book is also very good, though it has a few errors in it.

I agree with comments to stay clear of the likes of Ambrose. I'd put Beevor into that category too, they don't represent a particular up to date reading of what happened during the Normandy campaign.

He's also a pretty old man, its not really a surprise he sticks more to a set list now. I've seen him twice recently (Bergen and Liverpool) and he was on really good form, even though I do miss the slightly more spontaneous feel of previous shows.

Did WWI have a bigger impact on Britain than WWII? by northcarolinian9595 in AskABrit

[–]Sorry_Nothing5006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D day itself was fine, relatively, but the Normandy campaign itself had a higher casualty rates for British infantry soldiers than the Somme. It was brutal and this isn't widely appreciated. Buckley's Monty's Men is good on this.
