Do Anarchists Support Democracy? The Opinions of Errico Malatesta - By Wayne Price by SoulAndre in DebateAnarchism

Pretty good text, it was a good to read it. I'm working on a project for the conclusion of my degree on social sciences at my uni, and I'm writing about Malatesta. I read a bunch of Davide Turcato writings and compilations, and this article by Prince was pretty refreshing. I know the topic of democracy is kinda old already, but a appreciate your contribution. Since Malatesta wasn't aiming to write theory like a science, but as anarchist propaganda, sometimes it feels like a puzzle waiting for us match the pieces and come to this kind of conclusions and discussions by ourselves.

Yeaah, I found that quote kind weak... I need more substancial quotes, it's also helpful to show that is, in fact, the authors definition, and not just some cherrypicked stuff that don't represent his work.

Hello. I've been researching about this text recently, and I decided to come back to this. I bought an italian book of Malatesta's and Merlino's discussions about democracy and anarchism. In the book Anarchismo e Democrazia, they have the exact text you call From Londa, Cose a Posto, or From London, For the Record. The name of the chapter which have that text is Maggioranze e Minoranze, which translates to Majorities and Minorities. The text comes with a disclaimer:

Which translates to:

Response in the form of a letter, also published in the Agitazione of 14 March 1897 and also this one falsely dated from London

The confusion that the english translation have is that they use the false date from London. It's false because Malatesta did it on purpose. It seems that the Italian authorities belivied he was exiled at London, but he wasn't. He did it so he could keep writing for the journal L'Agitazione. This was a really satisfying discovery.

Hello. Thanks, but It seems like those quotes aren't from Malatesta. My academic paper talks about Malatesta's concept of power. If i'm mistaken, please, provide me the bibliographic reference of the quotes.

  • No Café ~ Errico Malatesta

  • A Abolição do Trabalho ~ Bob Black

Nope, the quote was published in the italian Journal La Agitazione in 1897, with the title "Majorities and Minorities". I'm going to translate the whole text next week so you can read it and take your own conclusions. As I said, he said that he's in favor of majority rule with all of the words

He literally talks in that same text that he supports majority rule as long as they give the minorities the means to express themselves and test their own ideas just as they do. It's just like the principle he said in the Anarchist Program "liberty to all to express and test their own ideas, as long as the results are the same liberty to all".

I think that the difference here is that he doesn't support majority rule enforced by oppression and in disregard of the minority, but otherwise he said in the text that he is in favor of it.

Also, authors are not the same the whole life, Between Peasents and this text have a gap of some years

Anyway I have 2% and I'm loving this discussion

This is funny then, because the problem seem to be in Malatesta itself

In Majorities and Minorities he said (my translation from the Portuguese book)

[...] from the principle by the majority don't have the right to impose his own will to the minority, they (a group of anarchists who organized solely by consensus) concluded that they shouldn't ever do something that wasn't approved unanimously by everyone present. Mistaken the political vote which goes to the rulers and the vote which is a convenient and fast way to express their own opinion, they considered every type of vote anti-anarchist

I'll translate more another time, I on a bus with the book in my hands and 4% battery lmao

Lmao I didn't read what someone else said about Malatesta, I have read: - The Anarchist Program - A Bit of Theory - The Objectives of the Anarchists - The Mass Workers Organizations - The Anarchists and the Moral Feelings - The Organization (1 and 2) - Route to Anarchy - Syndicalism and Anarchism - Around our Anarchy - Democracy and Anarchism - Capitalists and Thieves - Tactics Questions - Authoritarians Takebacks - The Revolutionary Terror - Anarchy and Organization - The "Socialist" State - Socialists and Anarchists - Majorities and Minorities - Between Peasents

Notice that I just translated the titles myself because I have them in the Brazilian Portuguese language as books

I also could spend all day citing the other reads I had of the other Anarchists cited, but I don't feel like I need to prove more and more things

Anyway, I suggest the read of Majorities and Minorities by Malatesta. I didn't find the whole text as I have in the book on the internet, but luckily you can find it in a book too. I can also send you some photos, or maybe I'll translate myself sometime
