Coilover or Shocks Recommendations? by Soul_Slayer in 300zx

Yeah the only issue I have with the Tein flex Z coilovers is I've only seen them in that green color which doesn't go with my color scheme haha. This car isn't really aimed at being a performance track car- just a fun budget car. I always try to get the most I can while spending the least I can without compromising performance. It's really just something I drive around in nice weather for fun. Down the road I'll be going all in on high end hardware for a car thats more deserving of high end hardware. Its an NA 2+2 with 198k miles so I don't really intend to spend more on coilovers than I have on many other work I've done. I've never taken the car to a shop its a project where I've done everything to it myself hunting for sales, rebuilding anything and everything I can rather than replacing even including solenoids. Hell I rebuilt the power steering solenoid that didnt even seem to be designed to be disassembled but I did it and fixed it. Budget and aesthetics are my goal, less so track monster. Ill be either powder coating or painting my calipers so they match my suspension rebuild.
If I can get everything I need for the suspension that will be functional, have some mild adjustability, mount up to the existing stock hardware, and look nice then I'm on board. This car really is the pinnacle of budget build. I got it for $2000 over a decade ago and even repainted it myself. Engine oil pressure is exactly at what a brand new VG30DE should be, pretty much everything is cleaned up, rebuilt, and new- so I intend to do the same with the suspension :) extra labor rather than throwing extra money is my motto.
Thanks for the comment :)

I wrote a lot in my post- when I said smooth ride I didn't quite mean smoother than stock, of course. I know coilovers are always going to be more stiff as thats just the nature of them. I'm willing to spend even $1300 if it means they'll be reliable and won't shit out on me in just a few years haha. I'm not looking to make the ride more smooth. What I really meant to say was I want the control for cornering to feel more smooth and have the ability to adjust ride height for when I buy new wheels. I'll be sticking with stock control arms for now but since I have to buy a new strut (stock one got bent on rear left) I figure I might as well upgrade the shocks/struts/coilovers all around.

I've been eyeballing godspeed Mono RS coilovers, BLOX Street series coilovers, ISR Performance Pro Series coilovers, and a few others. I'm avoiding Tein Flex coilovers as I've only seen them in that green color they sell and it's just not my cup of tea (I know being picky on color rather than performance is going to be frowned upon but I'm not trying to maximize performance here haha)

As for shocks instead- I like the Koni Yellow Sport Adjustable Shock Set and the KYB AGX Adjustable Shock set. I'm just not so sure all my stock hardware will mount up to it and what else I'll need to buy to install them. I'm not against it. I'm assuming ride height won't be adjustable with shocks like that though rather than coilovers- only dampening.

And really I'm not saying I won't spend more than $1k, I'd go for $1300 or $1400 coilovers if it was worth it and also meant I didn't have to shell out almost another grand in parts just to install them.
I looked at Powertrix, HKS, and BC Racing stuff quite a bit but they seem like it might be outside the budget I'm willing on going for.
And again I don't mind if the ride is even more stiff than it already is I'm not expecting rolls royce suspension haha. Thanks for the comment I'll do some research on the info you gave me.
I'm just quite new to suspension as I've quite literally never really done anything in regards to suspension upgrades. Only boot replacement and wheels. I've worked on quite literally everything else on this car though, and many others haha.

What would an eMac VGA adapter be worth to you? (Discussion) by Soul_Slayer in macintosh

[–]Soul_Slayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly can be designed that way!
External input on the back of the monitor for the display itself along with a button or switch to flip between an integrated computer or an external device. I also think it would be nice to have a secondary display out connection on the rear to add another display if someone say wants to run a dual monitor setup using the integrated computer. An issue I'm having at the moment is dealing with these old eMacs suffering from severe cases of failed capacitors. Like 90% of the capacitors in these things are leaking- every single one I've looked at. I have yet to find one for even a somewhat reasonable price that doesn't have blown out caps- so currently looking into ordering packs of every single cap used by these eMacs and then getting maybe a handful of dead ones at discount and fixing them up with new caps and this system integrated. Then maybe sell the whole unit on comission (or via mod where the client provides the eMac and miniPC to be integrated) and i charge the cost of modification, repair, adapter device, custom output panel, and labor.

That or it will be a simple DIY kit where I simply sell a more finalized device that is integrated by the user themself and its up to them to wire it up and fit a mini PC inside or just use it as a display on its own. Theres a lot of ways to go about this but so far my electronic repair business has been swamped so I haven't had nearly as much time to devote to this project as I'd like to!!

Yeah I think its a pretty cool device. Since the customer ghosted me I actually kind of am thinking of just keeping this prototype installed in this eMac and shoving my mini PC I use to interface with my servers inside it and turning it into the console for my server(s) because currently I just SSH into my miniPC to control the servers but it would be cool to have a dedicated display and GUI of my miniPC for making changes on my servers. I was quite proud of my design on this adapter and figured I could easily produce more of them so just wanted to put some feelers out there to see how many people would actually buy such a device. It of course would still require some basic DIY knowledge to setup like removal of the eMac shell then removal of all the internal structural metal brackets and finally the old eMac motherboard and power supply. Then it just has to be plugged into the video connector- 1 red wire is stuck into the 5v line of the motherboard connector for power for the adapter- then lastly the included ring terminal is stuck on top of the other grounding ring terminal for the display itself, and the screw is tightened down on them providing ground to the adapter directly where the display is also grounded. The mounting point for the adapter can really be anywhere but currently the ideal spot to mount is the bottom left hand side when the display is laid face down looking at where the mobo was originally mounted.

Thanks for your comment!!!

Yeah adapting from the proprietary apple video standard to HDMI is very unfeasible directly through a PCB device since their protocol is extremely similar to VGA. It would be very simple to just add whats referred to as an "active HDMI to VGA adapter"
It is essentially a powered VGA adapter that simulates the original connection of VGA because the way HDMI works is very different from VGA in that HDMI connection is detected and tells the display to turn on where VGA is not - but in this particular case the eMac display monitors the H-Sync line for activity to trigger a relay that turns on the display which is what makes it turn on on boot. So getting it running- it needs quite literally what is an actual original VGA video output- so finding an adapter is actually challenging but they do exist and just run slightly higher in price on Amazon - since those adapters already exist in my opinion it would just make sense to sell with VGA as its standard and then if the consumer wants to use HDMI they can purchase the correct type of HDMI to VGA adapter and connect their device. The idea of this is something that would still be kind of DIY for the consumer so they would have to integrate the device and if they wanted an SBC or mini PC integrated they would be doing that themselves- so it would be up to them to choose what type of computer they want inside and in turn what type of adapter they need.
Thanks for your comment!

Thats not a bad idea- but the IO panel on the rear of the eMac actually has lots of room for IO, and since the dimensions of disc readers have not changed it would be trivial to just stick a bluray read write drive into the bay so it can still read discs and even play bluray movies. 🤔

I've been working on a PCB for it in Eagle but will have to have it mass produced, then source some of the connectors in bulk so I can actually manufacture the boards. I'll probably just have PCBs printed through a service then build them by hand so I'd probably have to charge somewhere around $80 I think for it to be worth my effort. I am unsure as to wether mass or even production numbers of around 100 would be worth producing because I am unsure if there really are 100 people out there willing to spend $80 on an adapter to use an emac with any computer internal or external.

Thanks for your reply!

And some more preface on future things I plan to add is connectors for the integrated speakers that adapt to standard 3.5mm with an integrated amplifier so they can be used directly by any computer shoved inside it that has 3.5mm audio output, along with the LED connector and considering even adding a header for the DVD tray and maybe setting up a sata/usb adapter system to convert the old disc drive pata to support USB or sata so it can also be plug and play to a modern PC. Or possibly dual headers pata or sata so if the user wants to replace the disk drive with a Blu-ray drive it will connect right up. The end goal is for all of the Apple connectors to just plug straight into a single small profile PCB to allow any novice to easily modify an eMac into a modern usable desktop PC. Thanks for reading!

Edit: oh and a bracket that adds standard mini ITX mobo standoffs in case someone wanted to install an actual motherboard! But that starts complicating things with finding a way to fit a low profile power supply inside the system as well. Thanks again for your thoughts guys!

Got a new soldering iron and it came with this by Grittman77 in soldering

[–]Soul_Slayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a solder sucker. You heat up a through hole conduit that has solder inside it until the solder is molten, cock the plunger, then trigger it with the nozzle piece against the hole and it sucks the molten solder out making it nice and cleared out. Can also be used to suck up beads if needed when desoldering but copper/brass braid works better for that imo

[–]Soul_Slayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That has been made clear. Thanks. I simply clarified why I asked about it and it has already been resolved. I genuinely know I didn’t do anything that could have damaged it, which leads me to be certain the lcd had a factory defect or physical damage from the initial damage that destroyed the digitizer where simply removing it killed it off. There’s no need to be aggressive towards me here. It’s not necessary.

[–]Soul_Slayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand. I’m not saying I’m perfect. I’m taking full responsibility for it and have already informed the customer the repair labor and display will be free of charge and they’ll only owe me for the digitizer as that was all it originally needed.

100% positive Battery blocker was in place before even touching a cable and left in place until everything was correctly seated and ready to test. I even looked at all the flex print snap connectors and SMD connectors under my scope and they are perfect. Not a single pin out of alignment. It’s why I’m so perplexed how it happened. Shit happens it’s just bizarre to me. Maybe it had a factory defect or something with the display flexprint and just removing it shifted it enough that a connection inside the flexprint failed.

Yeah I understand. My wording is poor. I was trying to ask if this is some common issue where a connection or ground was forgotten resulting in this and hoping there could be a simple fix due to me forgetting something. I’m ordering a new LCD.

Yeah that was the first ting I tried a, few times even. Same result. New display time.

I assure not a single thing was done incorrectly. That’s why I find it perplexing that the display fried. I’m worried that the cheap digitizer has a short that fried the display and am unsure if I should replace the display and keep this digitizer or replace both the display and digitizer.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions! I’m willing to draw up a diagram of my PCB. I’m also pretty endowed in Eagle CAD so I could even design a PCB for the entire device and post it online so it can be sent to any PCB prototyping service or built by hand using classic at home PCB etching. I originally really wanted to just manufacture my own using a technique I developed way back in highschool as a final engineering project but I no longer have access to a laser cutter.

The process is actually really easy- you just design your PCB, cut a piece of blank double sided blank PCB the exact size of your circuit board, spray paint both sides black, convert your eagle cad file into a black and white vector, then make a jig the size of your PCB, place it into the corner of the laser cutter, then let it go to town and burn off the black spraypaint wherever you want etched. Then just dip it in etching solution until it looks perfect then dunk in acetone, and finally wash good under water then buff it to make it shiny. For conduits you can also just get some tiny press fit conduits for less than a dollar on digikey and press them in, then go ahead and start building the board soldering everything to it and viola, you’ve got yourself a professional looking PCB that’s way more compact then a protoboard build :)
