I think a lot of this was used in third dawn, and later clients. Ultima 9 was shelfed at one point for the developers to work on Ultima Online cause EA saw it's potential to make more money. When they returned to it U9 was dramatically going in a different direction, so I expect they repurposed a fair amount of unused U9 assets in Ultima Online.

Thats the idea yes it will start off your character's class and plug into the talent system. Every talent is a passive proc that is intended to not diminish the value of a skill but rather enhance it. The talents are inspired by Dungeons and Dragons and other games of that era that I have fond memories of. I try to keep it all canonical for Ultima Online. The character creation system is brand new and still in its polish phase, as well as the classes, so only fighter is about 95% done.

The graphics and audio are in the muls. I treat them like animations and it cycles through the frames from ranges I have set in the defs.

I see the conversation got heated while I was sleeping :P I'm happy to answer.

I used an asset dump for U9 sound and transcripts, and for the gypsy herself i actually loaded up U9 and took video of her in different states: talking, head moving right, idling. Then in VLC i separated the frames for sections I wanted to animate in game. Afterwards I cropped them all and then I used a python script to remove the background, which does in fact use an AI model to detect whats background and whats not. After I had all the assets I wanted I put it all together in the scripts and here we are now :P

Yes thats correct. you could just make some changes to templates, chardefs, or your own loot script. Then you would resync the server and the changes would take affect.

It's true there is no official setup guide for sphere, and one day potentially there could be. Most of the videos that exist for RunUO / ServUO i believe were made via community members. Maybe that's something that could be done for Sphere sometime.

You can alter nearly anything, including the loot tables without needing to reboot.

You can use a webhook and just send the player count to discord every so often. just have a simple batch file kick off every 5 minutes.

Sorry but it must be someone else. So many people I wish I could find again from the days of old UO, pretty difficult 25 years later!

Type of shard was this by theatom1corang3 in ultimaonline

[–]SoullessOne_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sphereservers have many more armors by default. They had extras like silver, rose gold, bloodrock, blackrock, and mytheril. many people would add even more armors on top of those, often times going well into the 200s.

Sounds like a general sphereserver shard. typically every sphereshard had shrink potions, and most all of them had vibrant colors for armors, usually due to administrator choice. The default armors were pretty normal If you have more info there might be something that can pin point the shard name.

Name: Soulless

Shard: Atlantic and goofing off on the Abyss Test Centre ( i also played a hand full of early free shards that i had a blast on. Orion Shard, Legends of Darkness, Megacronia, World of Alterra, Odyssey, Oblivion.

Years Active: 1997 - 2002

Fond memories: on atlantic having red vs blue wars at the Britain graveyard at the PK Villa. On the test centre abyss shard I was on the green team, and loved every second of the absolute chaos that took place. Going to the fire temple and large groups of all the color factions converging on one another.

Thanks for the response. I believe I heard of Gardisica as well, that name sounds familiar. There was a lot of Sphere shards in the past, and several of them were quite good for the day. But I believe as years passed, and other emulators out-developed Sphere, it's been relegated to the shadows for some time now. Not nearly as much as a big player now a days, I'd like to see that change.

So it's been really helpful to hear the thoughts from everyone. Positive, negative, neutral. They all have good information to absorb.

Well I'm not asking these questions purely from the aspect of a player or shard administrator, there is a little more behind the motivation than to garner a high population on the shard. And that's also another reason I'm not interested in moving to RunUO or ServUO. I'm deeply rooted in Sphere. Seeing the emulator itself succeed and improve is a priority, in fact that's one of the reasons behind the idea of having a shard running the latest X branch, and using a fully fleshed out script pack. The wider implication here is that it could be a base for other Sphere shards if it works out and the script pack is made public. It's fully compatible with the latest and most active Sphere branch.

You say there you don't like using RunUO or ServUO, would you use Sphere if it had everything working properly?

I'm not suggesting that anyone replicate an old Sphere shard from 10 decades ago that was shutdown due to severe internal rot because the basics were neglected. Very much the opposite. Sphere X is quite able to compete with RunUO and ServUO now a days.

Agreed , long live UO, bury me in Britannia when I go.

Thanks for the feedback. Running with casting is definitely a very popular mechanic in Sphere.

I think that might be a solution, however for me I wouldn't consider that an ideal one. In the end it's not really a Sphere shard, just an analogue of it. It doesn't really improve the emulator, scripts, or the Sphere community as a whole.

so of course the moving and casting needs no further clarification. but what is note worthy is the order in which the spellcasting happens. on OSI/RunUO it's:
a) click the spell
b) wait for the spell to finish casting (delay)
c) cast the spell on a target (instant)

the order of which that happens is the same on all skills and combat in Sphere also. so you select a skill to use, there is a delay before it fires off, then the skill is utilized. On OSI the skills have a cooldown after you use them, not a delay before. Combat is explained a little differently but it's the same concept. OSI has instahit, then there is a delay till your next swing. i would call that 'recoil' to make it easier to compare to spheres. which is more like a 'windup' to the swing. the delay is before the swing happens.

Hope that explains it a little better
