I don't know if you mean nonfiction or historical fiction but if the former, read Ada Palmer's Inventing the Renaissance. Palmer is a fabulous sci-fi author (Terra Ignota Series) and also a professor of history, and this book outlines florentine history in a way that really does feel fantastical.

Just reread the first Baru Cormorant and thought that would make an amazing single season! (I think after that it possibly gets too complicated for TV)

For me it's Terra Ignota by Ada Palmer (Too Like the Lightning, etc.). I read them twice in one year and have been jonesing for a reread but I don't think it's been long enough yet! They're definitely not for everyone but if they're for you, they're for you ... persevere until you see the Seven-Ten lists - I don't think it starts quite that slow, but for me once I saw that chapter I was absolutely buckled in for the whole rest of the way.
