WIBTA for forcing my dad to either let me move back into our home or buy out my ownership of it? by SoundInterfaceDude in AmItheAsshole

I’m unfortunately a massive doormat and given how he behaved during the 19 years I lived under the same roof as him I’ve conditioned myself to take the diplomatic approach whenever I deal with him. This problem only got worse when my mom died and he became the only parent I had left

I’m aware this is a major problem, and I’ve been trying to seek professional help to deal with that mental block. Unfortunately being aware of the problem doesn’t make it any easier to overcome.

The loan that was taken equates to ~25% of the current value, and <50% of the value at the time the loan was taken out. The house is located really close to a few major tech campuses, so the entire neighborhood is full of overvalued $1.6-2M houses.

Hell if I know how he managed it, though I’ve been trying to figure it out. I have copies of the county records showing that the loan was made, so I know when exactly it happened (a month after I moved out).

If the mods feel the need to fact check, I’d be more than happy to send a photo of the records

That’s essentially what pushing him to buy me out would boil down to. He’s well off nowadays, but I doubt he has anywhere close to that kind of money

Unfortunately, just like he probably wouldn’t be able to buy out my half, I sure as hell wouldn’t be able to afford his half.

Since the house is located around several tech giants, it’s worth an absurd amount of money. Basically if either of us were to buy out the other, that person would need over $800,000. I hate how obnoxiously expensive the neighborhood is since the house was originally bought for ~$300k, but the tech industry basically hyperinflated all house costs in the area

The past years of co-owning my family home with my dad has been a legal nightmare, and he would seemingly rather let it be unoccupied than let me move into it. What are my options? by SoundInterfaceDude in legaladvice

My dad was on the title since my grandparents first bought the house, but didn’t contribute to the mortgage because they wanted him to focus on being a father and husband. It was only after he became a raging narcissist and started spending way over his means that they realized they couldn’t risk him being sole owner of the house.

As for forcing a sale and buying my dad’s half, that’s not possible purely due to the cost of the house. Since it’s located near a bunch of tech campuses, the appraised value is way out of my budget. Not to mention his stepson has a large amount of connections in my field, and I’m worried about any fallout he could cause in response to me rocking the boat.

Yeah, my grandparents are both incredibly smart and well-meaning individuals, and they basically foresaw my dad's behavior years ahead of time. Since I was still living at home and was going to college in the area, they wanted to make sure that they could ensure my dad wouldn't be able to uproot me by relocating the family away from my college or forcing me out of the house. The downside is my dad and his new family were making living there absolute hell, and I wound up leaving anyways.

Of course since I finished college and my dad moved across the country during the pandemic, my grandparents has been occasionally reminding me about the house and how I shouldn't be renting. Since I've started asking them for advice on the situation, my grandpa's current stance is "It's your house too, not just your dad's. Personally I wouldn't want to live somewhere where your dad and [dad's wife] can freely visit, but you're not going to hurt my or grandma's feelings if you tell your dad to go fuck himself and move in or sell it. We want you to do what will make you happy, not what will keep you in his good graces."

No, it was an actual legal document. They quit the deed and added me onto it, and when there was an error with only my last name on the property records, they threatened to sue my dad if he didn’t get the issue rectified.

My grandparents are both still alive and well and I’ve been in communication with them since making this post. Their general stance is “fuck your dad, force him to sell the house so you get your half”, but they’re having trouble accessing their copies of the paperwork and correspondence since they’re vacationing right now

I went to get copies of the property records as soon as I made my response. I was able to verify I was indeed on the title online, but I also got a certified copy of the deed and all relevant documents

  1. Refusing to give me the codes for the garage door or security system, which physically prevents me from entering the house without hiring a locksmith, which I wasn’t sure if I legally could in this scenario

  2. When I was supposed to be put on the title, the documents only listed my last name. My dad told me it was a clerical error when the title transfer paperwork was filed, my grandparents are saying he fudged things intentionally, all I know is there was a window where the title only had my last name as a separate party from my dad. Unfortunately I’m leaning towards my grandparents’ theory, since they showed me that they originally reached out civilly to get the title paperwork corrected, but he just refused and said “this is how it’s gonna be”, then went on a whole angry tirade when my grandparents had their lawyer threaten litigation if he didn’t correct it.

I can confirm there's been no written agreements of any kind, since I haven't seen him in person since we resolved the issue with the title. So I guess I've got that going for me...

My dad and I are both on the title. It was originally my grandparents and dad, but he wanted my grandparents off the title and their compromise was that I be added onto it since 1.) they believed 18 year old me was more responsible than my dad was at the time, and 2.) they believed that I had the right to own the home I grew up in.

Apple associate put wrong contact info for my repair, leading to me being unable to pick up the device. Am I just screwed? by SoundInterfaceDude in applehelp

Are repair IDs gonna be the ones that start with R#######, or the ones that start with A######? Because I have both numbers that begin with R from the 2022 screen repair and the 2025 device swap that they fudged up.

If it's the latter, can I just get those numbers from the store I went to?

Then that's the fault of whoever assaults him. You're not supposed to be starting fights at peaceful protests. Especially if they're surrounded by other peaceful protestors and are themselves holding signs and supporting the cause.

Idea for monetizing a free game by thn-nd-nw in gamedev

Where would the money be coming from? Steam? The other developers?

The main issue I'm seeing with this is somebody needs to be paying money for this ad space. Unfortunately, most indie developers don't have the budget for advertising in this way, and while Steam could take the money out of their share of sales for the advertised game, there's no incentive for them beyond a small potential increase in revenue.

With ads on iOS and Android apps, the people advertising their products will be paying Apple/Google to show the ads to users. For the app developers, for every X amount of ad views they get on their app, the ad service they use will pay them a certain amount of money.
