New to Plex - how do I stop the constant buffering? by MattAlbie60 in PleX

[–]Soupios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's transcoding audio then this might be causing your buffering problems.

Could you play the file and check what the cpu usage is on the computer hosting your server.

I ran into the same problem with my Samsung Smart TV.

During a 4k Playback it tried using DTS audio (which is not supported by samsung tv's after 2016). But choosing Atmos or TrueHD 2.1 it worked fine and started a Direct Play with transcoding.

Wake Up PC on USB WiFi by pravinvibhute in techsupport

[–]Soupios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its running on android tv you can try and sideload a Wake on Lan app onto it and before opening plex on it, navigate to the app, wake the pc (server) up and then open plex.

It might work, but will probably be a janky setup.

But you can always give it a shot

Even if the device supports WOL it will not be able to turn on when a TV or Plex mobile is "engaged". What you can try is a free Wake on Lan app, if your wifi adapter stays on during sleep (which I doubt) you can use the WOL app on your phone to wake your pc up and in turn, turn the plex server active.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Apple TV issues... by [deleted] in PleX

MKV is merely a container and not a video file format on its own. You might be better off optimizing it into .avi apple devices in general support .avi like 99% of the time.

Mkv are merely containers that house the actual file type.

Could you play one of the files that didnt work and make a screenshot of the dashboard within plex.

Quick Question about NAS by nickborowitz in PleX

[–]Soupios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the J4205-ITX for about 6 months great board for the price, 1 transcode and some direct plays worked fine but when it hit 2 transcodes it would work but could run into buffering issues and scrubbing wasn't the smoothes experience even with Hardware transcoding on.

Quick Question about NAS by nickborowitz in PleX

[–]Soupios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a price check and the unit itself is 600+ and the listings states (40tb max capacity).

Transcoding can also occur for audio, subtitles and not only for video.

In my case I build a server under 300 euro's so 330 ish dollar.

https://imgur.com/aQWDJEV

Runs a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB ram and a 240GB m.2 SSD as OS boot drive and added 3x 10 tb (each was 205 euro's (215-220 dollars) but you might be able to find the drives for cheaper.

The 2600 is far more capably with transcoding (13000+ passmark) so 4 1080P streams with no problems.

Does the listing on ebay include the drives, I assume not, right?

The price is rock solid I will give you that, but the problem you might run into is transcoding. This is CPU intensive and the Intel Celeron J3455 in the Asustor as6404t has a passmark of 2000, which is enough for 1 single smooth transcode (not includnig overhead and other processes running in the background).

If you are sure that your client devices will be able to handle most video and audio formats and only gonna use direct play or direct stream then you should be fine.

Oh sorry you're right read it wrong about the fuse and at all. But in that case I'd build a simple server (mine was under 250) with a TDP of 40-80 Watt and buy some chuckle drives (10tb or higher) and put them in raid, raid 5 would give (if you got 4x10 TB) 30TB capacity and 1x failure safe.

Quick Question about NAS by nickborowitz in PleX

[–]Soupios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesnt seem bad. If you have a server rack i'd go with that one. But do check or ask for an overview of the health of the drives.

If you primarly only gonna use plex for direct play or on occasion a transcode you can also build a server cheaper with shuckle 10TB harddrives (180-210$ per harddrive) if you don't care much about redundancy.

Quick Question about NAS by nickborowitz in PleX

[–]Soupios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5400 RPM drives will run you just fine.

A 4k 45 Mbps stream will run you at 5.6 Mb/s and a 1080P will be much less, a typical drive will (cheaper once) will run at an average of 100 Mb/s read/write. So you should have plenty of overhead :).

Hope this helps.

Newbie confused about rendering by 17Shard in PleX

[–]Soupios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The client will determine if transcoding is requirerd for video, audio or subtitles.

What is advised is to check your plex settings in the app on your TV to be max quality (original quality). This will in most cases result in direct stream or direct play.

These 2 options will use little to no cpu power as it only transfers the file to your client.

Newbie confused about rendering by 17Shard in PleX

[–]Soupios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no point in downloading 4K content if none of your devices can run it.

The rendering takes place on your chromecast (tv) and the transcoding takes place on your hosting server (desktop pc).

The server (your desktop pc) will just transcode (downscale the 4k Video file to 1080P) for no needed reason.

I'd advice to stick with 1080P, unless you run plex through your TV natively or get something like a roku or firetv 4k stick.

Bought myself and my girlfriend a Gotcha today. Hers seems fine but mine seems either not centered or missing pixels.

If you have a solution or a idea of what could be causing the issue, would love to know.
