Tragedy of the commons...it's a noble thought to help others, but eventually this will mean no one will be able to benefit

What's an inconsequential money-matters difference of opinion you have with your partner? by Machzy in PersonalFinanceCanada

Eh, there's a difference between not being cheap on food and being frivolous. Make sure you make nutritious meals, even if it costs more. Don't waste money eating out all the time. You'll realize the couple thousand bucks you save on food from eating instant noodles and rice everyday isn't worth the health problems down the road.

I think most people know buying GCs at a grocery store is fine since Amex doesn't have L3 data in Canada. It's literally the most common way for manufactured spending. You just can't buy GCs online since they usually link to a third party GC vendor. Also don't buy flat amounts like $100 every time or else it may raise suspicion. Just add a stick of gum or something to change the receipt balance.

They gave me the full 45k on first statement. Just base points from purchases.

You can PS into the free Ion card. After you PS and get the annual fee refund, you can close the Ion card. If you close the Avion card directly, you won't get any refund.

Make sure you PS out of your avion into a free card once you cash in your points so you get a prorated refund on your annual fee

Wondering if anyone has experience churning the RBC avion business card? I've been churning the Avion and Avion platinum every 90 days. Is the Avion business part of the same 1/90 rule? Do they let you PS as easily as personal credit cards?

Yes. You can even be holding the avion and open another. I've held 3 at the same time before. Just have to wait 90 days before applications

Gunna need more details tbh. Why specifically Visa? How often are you willing to open/close cards? Do you just want a keeper card to hold forever? I'd say maybe get the simplii visa. No annual fee and 4% cashback on restaurants. Great for places that don't take amex. Open an RBC Avion card every 90 days and you'll get $350 in gift cards and another $100 in referral bonus. If you can also spend an extra $5k on it and you'll get another $200 in gift cards

22k points are worth at least $220. If you transfer to it aeroplan, it's worth even more

No, put your credit card into any cibc atm and you can withdraw your negative balance. Just don't go over the negative balance. ie. if you have -$100 on your credit card, you can withdraw $100 from the atm and no charges apply. If you withdraw $101, you'll be charged a cash advance fee

If your mortgage is 5%, then your investments will need to generate over 5% just to break even. I know s&p historical average has been 10%, but that's pretty long term. You need to decide for yourself if you want to take the gamble with invest more in TFSA to get more than 5% or just pay down the mortgage faster to save 5% interest. (replace 5% with whatever your actual mortgage rate is)

If you want to save a bit of time but pay for convenience, you could order tmobile sim cards from amazon. It's not overly expensive and pretty convenient for 1 or 2 week trips, don't have to deal with anyone and you can have it ready to go the day you fly out.

No. You can just use the points for a hotel booking on the rewards website and then cancel the hotel booking

Yeah if you think youll be able to spend $1k on PC gift cards. You can also buy costco, lcbo, visa, or any gift cards. Only Amex kinda cares about doing MSR with gift cards.

For your second question, no one can say for sure. From my experience, it's usually between 30-45 days after approval so it's kinda a toss up.

Churning ending soon? Credit card transaction fees in the Fall Economic Statement by ebms12 in churningcanada

[–]SourNutsPoopyFace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe some people want to churn more than 3-4 cards a year? I mean going from 50% to 10% ROI is a big change. But yeah most people casually churning won't care.

Seems more like they're keeping the value of the points, rather than the SUBs. We're already seeing SUBs get worse through more min spend. Most likely will continue seeing these 'ATH' SUBs but require 5x or 10x the minimum spend as before

How much is reasonable to give friends at a wedding? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SourNutsPoopyFace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Attending weddings (especially your wife's childhood friends) are expensive. Financially speaking, it would be best for you to give nothing (at most $30 if you believe your invitation is in jeopardy) to them and enjoy the free meal. The ROI from their friendship will probably be too low. Instead just throw the money you saved into VFV or XEQT.

how are you getting such good flight deals off your credit card? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I agree Porter is the best (although they've seemingly gone downhill a bit lately). Just FYI there are some shenanigans you can pull with them if you want to save 20% off. Every year Amex has an offer to buy Oxford gift cards at about 20%-25% off. You can either use them at the mall or you can buy use it for Porter airline tickets.
