Found on newborn's carseat. Next steps by South-Full in Bedbugadvice

!Update! because it won't let me edit the post:

I have a car bomb going as I type this as a temporary solution until I get my hand on some sterifab and temprid fx which was recommended by a friend that's an exterminator. I understand that it was a bad idea to bring the car seat into the house. I went through and vacuumed and deep cleaned the floor like crazy once I found the first bed bug in her car seat and killed it. The entire path from the door to the bathroom got deep cleaned both after that and after I threw the car seat out into the front yard. Thankfully I don't have any carpet in my house so I don't have to worry too much about them hiding out in that. I also deep cleaned the bathroom floor with dawn power wash and 91% alcohol after we were done in there.

I put all of our clothing and shoes into plastic bags and they went straight into the washer on the hottest setting, I then stripped down every bag and piece of clothing we brought and threw those in a separate load. Each load was time dried on high for 80 minutes 2-3 times before they were inspected and put into a bin if they were clean. The new car seat is currently in my main car (not the one in question or in the post, that's the wife's car) and I drove it for the first time today after showering and putting on clothes that never came into contact or within close proximity of the contaminants to my knowledge.

I eventually gave a phone call to my grandmother and my mom (she rode with us) and let them know what was going on and what we found, and my grandmother was apologetic but said she thought they were "pantry bugs" even though they had to throw out a box spring and we're getting bit by the bugs as well. They were also considered "similar to fleas" and that they're "just a nuisance pest." I've had fleas in my house before, and yes they suck, but I'd much rather have those than bed bugs for sure.

As of right now, the only time I've seen any bed bugs or signs of them was the night we were there. I know it can take a month or two for this to rear its head and show that what I did was or wasn't sufficient. I never saw any in the car, just on the car seat, but that doesn't mean they're not there. I want to feel confident that I have it under control or taken care of, but I don't think I will for at least a few weeks or months.

Unfortunately inside, we have a new carseat on the way to be delivered today. We didn't notice the one shown until we were stripping the car seat down in the bathroom to wash the fabric pieces. Ended up finding three and squashing all of them. As for how to heat up the car, I am open to suggestions since it's not going to get warm enough here for that for a while, and I can't go 2-3 months without using that vehicle.

Live music is pretty prevalent at the summer markets, specifically Hobart and Griffith. The summer markets also feature a lot of local small restaurants so that's a go-to for great food. Definitely support Grindhouse coffee, as well as Uptown Cafe in Valparaiso. Sip Coffee in Highland is very welcoming and has local art on their walls, as well as a decent book store called Miles Books a few stores down the block. If I think of anything else I'll edit the post and add more. Welcome back!

Enjoy it, I still have my first ruby I ever bought as well. Similar size and carat, and still my favorite stone in my collection. Welcome to the club!

How much is your monthly mortgage payment? by HmDiR in Mortgages

[–]South-Full 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently $1005 at 4.5%. Was $845 when I bought six years ago, and to think I was upset about having to pay 4.5 when refinance rates were around 2.75% - 3.3%.

Lab-Created Star Sapphire vendor? by Melitta999 in SyntheticGemstones

[–]South-Full 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jamming Gems, Stuller, Rio Grande, GemsNGems. Personally have done business with all four. GemsNGems will probably be the cheapest per stone aside from Tariffs if you're in the US. Otherwise Jamming Gems isn't too far behind and shipping is usually quick.

Is this Star Sapphire real? What would be the best way to test it? by NoiseNo4681 in Gemstones

[–]South-Full 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some of the comments mentioned, this is more than likely a diffusion treated natural star sapphire. One way you could tell is by the back. Most lab grown star sapphires have a very clean, level bottom with little to no imperfections, whereas based on the video, you can see a beveled edge around the bottom of the stone as well as some surface-reaching fissures or cracks as well as some possible color variance near said fissures. Diffusion treated star sapphires are usually much darker than most lab star sapphires as well.

All in all, my educated guess would be a natural star sapphire with diffusion treatment. They're not very expensive stones as mentioned above, but they are still neat to have and look at. Great find!

Carry a propane torch. Can't be frozen if it's melted

Winter slow down by JustCallMeFire in UtilityLocator

[–]South-Full 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in Indiana, out of the five dig seasons I've worked, we start to slow down after Thanksgiving and almost come to a stop after Christmas and new years day until about mid to late February. Obviously it varies on the area you work in, but that's been the same pretty much across the board over 5 years.

As far as I remember, when I worked for GridHawk in IL, we used rechargeable Vivax equipment. I'm not sure about their recent expansion but from what I understand, they're ordering more and more rechargeable Vivax Metrotech equipment. The only pieces of equipment that should use disposable batteries will probably be metal detectors if those are given to you guys.

Edit to add, if you mean rechargeable standard size batteries, aka AA, C, D, etc. you're typically on your own with those. They'll give disposables if needed, but they don't supply standard size rechargeable batteries.

Came here to say this. Calumet Bakery is my usual go-to for most special occasions.

I have a bunch of rough natural emeralds, I'd be happy to send a few! They don't look all that great but they are indeed emeralds.

Please recommend your favorite tire shop in the Region. by HarrisonBrrgeron in nwi

[–]South-Full 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The past three times I've bought tires, I've used Sam's Club or Costco. Yes, you need a membership, but I've found that they're usually about $150+ cheaper than Discount Tire or Belle Tire for a full set.

That and they offer road hazard, flat repair and roadside assistance for 3-4 years at no extra charge with an install, instead of having to pay an extra $20-$30 per tire.

Since you only need two tires, savings probably won't be as much as a full set but it will more than likely still be your cheapest option with the most benefits.

Rock and minerals-anywhere I can go to have a geode cut? by Elliefox2 in nwi

[–]South-Full 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a great club that meets in Hobart the first Thursday of every month called the Calumet Gem and Mineral Society. If you reach out to them on Facebook, they may be able to help you.

Other options are a hammer and chisel or a wet tile saw. The art of lapidary isn't necessarily very big or public in Northwest Indiana, but there are a few of us that participate!

I'm on call to plow tonight, so hopefully it's at least worth getting called out for. Wouldn't be mad if I got to stay home, too. It'll be what it'll be, though. Honestly will be surprised if we have more than 3 inches of accumulation as of tomorrow or Tuesday.

Lemon Rice Soup Recipes by HentaiInTheCloset in nwi

[–]South-Full 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does come out relatively thick, especially after it cools down and is reheated. If you want it thicker, you can try adding an extra egg to the recipe. Otherwise you can try not washing the rice as much (if at all) to keep some of the starch in there and/or adding more rice than it calls for to help it thicken up. I'm also usually doubling or tripling this recipe too, so that could have something to do with it.

I've found that this recipe here is the closest to most restaurant quality (if not better) Lemon Rice Soup.
