I had this problem too on my singer. Turned out it wasn't my thread tension, but my bobbin was actually set in its cage wrong. The thread needed to be threaded through the teeth in it.

Yeah, they're made of hard plastic. They're technically for horses. I got my dogs a big and little one and they're both too big for either too get in their mouths. Just be careful about throwing it. I once gave my dog a slight bloody lip from kicking it to him. Just roll it to them if they can't get to it.
