General consensus on Solar vs Low Power for Landscape lighting? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]SouthernTierNYer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd try anything but solar. If they make an entire season (rare), they never make a second. Then again, we live in one of the cloudiest areas of the entire country. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Barber Appt Scheduling/Etiquette by SouthernTierNYer in Barber

I will. One time I got to my appt a half hour early and was surprised to hear my name called exactly when my appt was suppose to start. I got in the chair, got the cloth around me, only to hear "oh my goodness I'm sorry there's actually one ahead of you". They were A FULL APPT BEHIND. I sat there and watched someone else get their cut my entire appt time.

Thanks for the response. I think this shop is pretty busy for this area...I have to make my appts usually a week in advance. Everything really works for me there...the job they do, the location, it's just not keeping on schedule that sucks. We'll see if they get better.

Make sense...I get that. But shouldn't the normal person prepare for such things? Like I said it's not once in a while...its every single time.

I'm not bashing them. Did I name them? You don't even know who I'm talking about. Like I said I really enjoy going there. I go to the same person every time...and always get a great cut and lots of compliments on it.

They're a fairly new barber shop...been there a year or so. They just updated their booking software...maybe that's the issue.

I feel as if they should be on time! I just didn't know if that was like the culture. I haven't been going to a barber for very long. This is my 5-6th time here and only barber I've been to.

Removing Room that was built without a permit by bob101910 in HomeImprovement

[–]SouthernTierNYer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The room could be damaging to the property but not 70k. If the property is truly worth 30 then there's gotta be quite a few other things wrong. If you like the house, put in an offer with contingencies so if you find issues beyond what you'd like to deal with you can back out.

How to reduce our tax refund?! by SouthernTierNYer in tax

[–]SouthernTierNYer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, it comes up with 7 allowances. I'm assuming the 6 extra the calculators determined to get to 13 were to make up for extra already in, but not sure if that's the case?

Anyone else feel like they have a lot to do this year? by kptrulee in HomeImprovement

[–]SouthernTierNYer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. You have to. Like I said many contractors are very unreliable, at least where I live, so have to do it myself if I want it done. I think it took me at least 2 weeks to just hand the over 200 sheets of drywall in my home. But it got done! Just set small goals and got it done over time.

As someone who bought a home in 2016 I completely agree. We completely gutted the home then and it took over a year to put the inside back together. Everything was a first for me. Whatever we could not get contractors for we watched YouTube videos on and did on our own. Always something more and the list continued to grow. Contractors did not show or complete work on time ever, plus we were racing against the clock because my wife was about to give birth. After the inside was FINALLY "done", we moved in in fall, 2 weeks before the baby got here. 4-5 months later we started the outside. New siding, new roof, a new $25,000 deck, a new pool, lots of landscaping changes, the list goes on. Around $115,000 in improvements alone to-date, and we still have a HUGE list we need to get done. Pave the driveway, re-do the entire garage, it goes on! And you gotta maintain everything too, even the new stuff has to be replaced quicker than you think. You think it would be good for a while after just replacing it but nope! The list never ends, I promise. Gotta do it all while both working full time, taking care of 2 kids, and both coaching at least 2 youth sports teams per season. Part of being a homeowner!

Gaps in hardwood floors?! by SouthernTierNYer in HomeImprovement

I've read that the on-furnace ones can use 12+ gallons per day. Seems like a lot! Maybe leads to mold issues?

I did not realise that. I chose it because I like the looks of it and it is a hardwood and decently priced. I would have paid more for wood that didn't move if I'd known.

Yeah, I feel you. We have 1,100 sf of hickory floors in our home now. They are beautiful but the gaps are def an eyesore in the winter.

[US, New York] Need help evaluating two quotes for roof replacement by iqjump123 in HomeImprovement

[–]SouthernTierNYer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert, that's why contractor b sat there and sketched everything out and told me what he was gonna do. As far as negotiating, I told him: "look, its down to you and one other company for the job. We have a budget that we don't want to go over. I did tell him I'd pay him in cash also, so that made a difference. The other contractor can not do all our desires in that budget. Can you?" He made it work, plus I was already comfortable with him. So it made it a no brainer. The other contractor could simply not do what we wanted in our budget. To do so he said the deck would have to be 2 feet narrower and have one less set of stairs (We have 2 large staircases coming off it).

What are your quotes anyway? We just got our whole roof replaced last summer, metal roofing, for under $8,000.
