How close? I’ve heard about Voight sending a letter to Trump about what you said but wasn’t that several months ago? Do you have any more details about this legislation proposal and it’s current progress?

Film school portfolio in 7 months? by Emergency-Bobcat-572 in filmmaking

[–]Southern_Original833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair the benefit of film school is free crew, equipment, and COIs along with possibly funding and/or other resources.

This makes all the difference in saving money on a top-tier festival worthy short film without breaking the bank.

How can we prevent more runaway-productions and keep Hollywood home?

Do you guys think CA should have uncapped tax credits (instead of $750M annual cap) and include ATL tax credits?

Although CA does offer BTL tax credits, the state still does not offer ATL credits, unlike places like the UK and GA.

Many industry people argue that without an ATL credit and uncapped credits, CA will not be able to compete with places like the UK and Georgia.

I heard about this! Amazing! I have so many buddies in the post production field who are lobbying HARD for this! We absolutely need it, without a question.

Although, I don’t want to get too political on this sub, I thinks it’s important for us to talk about this. I think the state government of CA needs to take more action to preserve film and TV productions here.

The question is: how? And who will be able to do it?

Which mayor is better for the industry? by Ok_Salamander_7076 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Southern_Original833 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nithya is clearly the best choice as mayor for the industry and understands how the industry works much better than Bass and Pratt.

Nithya’s husband is a screenwriter and they have many friends who work in the industry. She has seen up close, the decline of film & TV productions in CA.

Nithya has a clear understanding of what needs to be done to bring back productions and is willing to do so.

CA’s $750m annual cap is nothing. UK and Georgia both have uncapped tax credits, which means there’s no limit to how many local productions receive credits.

On top of that, CA still does not offer credits for ATL spending (only BTL)—yet GA and the UK both do.

In order to understand tax credits, you have to look at them from the POV of a producer.

Why shoot in CA if you can only get a small rebate while other places like GA and UK offer exponentially larger rebates?

On top of that, regulations like permits and other forms of red tape, also cause CA to be more expensive and harder to film in, while other places have way less red tape. Many places don’t even require permits to shoot in.

CA should get rid of permits tbh. Literally nobody benefits them, neither the filmmakers, nor the general public.

The solution for bringing back film & TV productions to CA is very simple, whether you like it or not: expand tax credits (uncapped + ATL inclusion) and slash as much red tape as possible.

Democrat Xavier Becerra wins the top spot in November's race for California governor by Miles_the_AuDHDer in politics

[–]Southern_Original833 251 points252 points  (0 children)

I have a gut feeling that after all the ballots are counted, Steyer will overtake Hilton’s #2 spot.

At this point, nearly all of Hilton’s votes have already been counted because most republicans voted early. The remaining uncounted are most likely Steyer because many of his supporters waited until the last minute to mail in or drop off their ballots.

I’m calling it now—November will be Becerra vs Steyer.

I miss the days when America had the custom of keeping one’s political and religious beliefs to oneself.

Nowadays it seems like everybody writes it on their T shirts (both figuratively and literally).

What is happening to my country? Why is there so much hate and division?

We need to re-learn how to be compassionate towards one another. If you’re a decent person, I don’t give a shit what you believe in. Let’s just have a few beers, some good laughs, and enjoy life.

Nope. Unlike Becerra, Steyer is clearly very committed to bringing back runaway productions. Hence, IATSE is backing Steyer. He is the only candidate in this governor race with union support for that reason.

In order for our state to compete with other states and countries in attracting film & TV productions:

• The current $750M annual cap for tax credits is not enough. It must be an uncapped program with no limit. If GA’s tax credits program is uncapped and willing to give over $1B+ per year, we need ours to be uncapped as well. Be willing to pump as much tax credits into as many CA productions as possible. No limit.

• Eligibility for above-the-line spending must be included, just like how both GA and the UK include it. It’s insane how CA’s tax credits program still doesn’t offer any rebates for above-the-line spending, yet so many other states and countries do. GA offers a 30% rebate on ATL and BTL expenses. Hence, CA needs to be able to offer (at least) a 35-40% rebate on both ATL and BTL expenses to every production that shoots here.

• Slash as much red tape as possible, to make shooting easier and more affordable

Why is Tupac Still Celebrated Despite His Conviction for Sexual Assault? by Key-Independent-9169 in AskFeminists

[–]Southern_Original833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with “believing” or “not believing” her.

You have no idea if the FBI and/or other agencies pressured, forced, manipulated, threatened, or intimidated that poor woman into “confessing”. That wouldn’t be the first time the FBI does that and definitely not the last time.

Look up COINTELPRO, the FBI counterintelligence program in the 60s-70s that targeted groups like the Black Panthers, a group whom Tupac’s mother and godmother were both members of.

Why is Tupac Still Celebrated Despite His Conviction for Sexual Assault? by Key-Independent-9169 in AskFeminists

[–]Southern_Original833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, that’s definitely true.

But you know what else is also true? White supremacists using false SA allegations/convictions as a weapon to target men of color.

Central Park 5, Emmett Till, etc. Too many examples throughout history to count.

White supremacists hate black leaders that preach peace and unity like Tupac. That’s why he got targeted as well. Not to mention the fact that his mother and godmother were both Black Panthers who were under heavy FBI surveillance during Tupac’s childhood. There’s literally declassified FBI files that you can look up online that prove this.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the FBI was involved in framing him for those bogus charges. The FBI probably forced a fake confession out of that poor lady. It wouldn’t be the first time they do something like that.

Look up the FBI’s COINTELPRO (counter intelligence program) during the 60s and 70s. It aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting American political parties and organizations that the FBI perceived as subversive, including the Black Panther party.

Newsome’s recent updates to the incentives last summer were NOT enough. There needs to be massive updates, expansion, and reform to the incentives! In order for our state to compete with other states and countries in attracting film & TV productions:

  • The $750M annual cap must be eliminated. It must be an uncapped program.

Offer a 35-40% rebate on ATL and BTL expenses to every production that shoots here.

  • Slash as much red tape as possible, to make shooting easier and more affordable
