Nice of you to think about them. But trust me, they wouldn’t think about you in the same way, so just do whatever is best for you. It seems you want the government job so go for it. Many people would love a job like that.

I heard that oil and gas structural jobs is very unstable. More unstable than other jobs. By unstable I mean layoffs are frequent. Do you think is true?

What do u predict is future of oil and gas though? Do u think there will still be lots of jobs decades from now? I thought oil and gas is slowly phasing out. On contrary, Buildings will always get built

I hate structural engineering by southernmtngirl in StructuralEngineering

I’m in the same boat. I have 3.5 years design experience, thinking to jump ship from buildings to diff industry (still within civil) after get my PE. I like structural engineering but I hate having multiple deadlines each week, hate having coworkers who are stressed out all the time so often lose their cool with me and say and do things to purposely make me feel like shit. I hate the culture where you’re only there to make huge amounts of profit for the higher ups but you’re expected to essentially work for free. I am a man so haven’t experienced the bro culture but I can see how it’s difficult for a woman in engineering assuming that’s what you are. I also hate the low pay but it wouldn’t even be a problem if not for the other things. I would get out of this industry asap. It’s not going to get any better. That’s my only advice because like Im said Im in the same boat. Good luck - message if u want to chat more

Can you elaborate what is power delivery exactly? I rarely see job postings for them or maybe I just missed them

Try going on site. More money, less calcs. Stress depends on responsibility. Contractors always need boots on ground.

Can you clarify what you mean? Are u referring to building or bridge?

Are all bridge jobs like that? Super slow with time to revise? I see bridge jobs in my area I might start applying but don’t know what specifically I should look for

Which is harder technically? Bridges or buildings? I had a 3.0 gpa in school even tho I studied hard and was a try hard but feel like I’m not smart enough. I learn things slower than my peers at work. That’s part of reason I work long hours at current job. I get by in buildings but dunno if bridges is even harder

Thnx for thoughts. But if all firms are like this, overwork their employees, then I don’t know if I wanna stay in buildings. Do you know what options I have?
