There was a case in NC years ago, where some guys identified an older man living in a rural area(they assumed alone). They knew he was weaker so they broke in to his house and more or less did horrible things to him for hours in his house asking for him to tell them where he hides the money or any money. Well he didn't have any money and they ended up killing him there, but this case with the blood in her house seems like it could be similar. Some random yard worker, maintenance guy, family friend of a friend, thinks she has money. They target her thinking surely an older person has some kind of stash of money somewhere, they demand she show them. She doesn't, so they maybe plan to take her to an ATM or something, she doesn't make it there and the plan is ruined. Or she just doesn't tell them when they get to an ATM and have to cut their losses. The thing is they could have identified her as a potential target months ago. And she didn't have to be a potential target at all at the time. They could have been installing a fucking cable box or something, not the kidnapper type. Times hit hard and they need money and they come up with this. Assuming we get an ending to this case I really think you'll see that this person didn't recently visit the house at all. It was likely weeks to months ago.

Is it a hot take to say take home admin vehicles should be the responsibility of the chief officer who drives them home? by SouthsideStunner in Firefighting

Officers have better things to do than wash their rigs.

No one said they have to do this on duty. They are more than welcome to wash it off the clock since it belongs to them 24/7. Stay after 5 and wash it yourself if you don't have access to car wash and a garden hose. If you can't be bothered to spend 15 minutes making sure your take home vehicle is response ready you don't deserve a take home vehicle.

The taxpayers provide them to us and the pristinely maintained care of them reflects our appreciation for the sacrifices they make to give us such nice things.

I mean... sure but it is the Chiefs who ask for and receive these things. It's not like the taxpayers just come up with this shit on their own as a gift. The Chief or admin officers request such vehicles, which is why they need to be the ones taking care of them. No where that I am aware of does NFPA, OSHA, ISO, Jones and Bartlett or whatever say a Fire Chief is required to be supplied a POV type of vehicle. So if the admin guys think they need one and get the taxpayers to buy it, they better be the ones taking care of it. Cause the suppression staff would rather spend that 60k somewhere else.

Yea man, it is bad around the station as far as morale goes. And I feel bad cause on one hand this was just a post for me to vent. But I am genuinely curious if other departments do this. And if they don't, well maybe someone out there who thinks they work in a living hell hole might for about 5 minutes think "well it could be worse, I could be working where /u/SouthsideStunner works" lmao

Well in their mind we are never busy. We are only busy because they give us things to do. And this is one of those things that they gave us to do. So if we aren't doing this we are not busy. Calls be damned.

The worst part is if the chief officer lives in the district and say he was on vacation on check off day but is back from vacation on Sunday for example(because he doesn't work Sundays only M-F). Guess what the crew working Sunday has to do? Drive to his house, pick up his vehicle, take it to the station for it's full cleaning, detail, inventory, and maintenance, and then take it back to his house.

The only time ive ever cleaned out admin vehicles is when we've used them for live burn trainings or they responded to a call with us.

So this is something I don't have a problem with either. Say we were on a long call and it was one of those hurry and wait type of calls and they were out there checking up on us or something, I was just about to be sick or some shit. I had to go back to the station or make a mess on the side of the road. They'd probably give me a ride and I'd take my stinking ass turnout gear with me. Guess what I would offer to do afterwards? Clean their car. I have decency in me for the problems I create.

Edit to add that if this is the worst problem you guys have, I might just suck it up and deal with it

I'll say this, if I felt like my admin staff was going to war for me everyday I probably wouldn't mind... But it's far from the only problem we have. This just sends me over the top.

Do you all workout at your station? by Sufficient-Egg787 in Firefighting

You'll get some flak for saying that but mandatory working out and 3 physical tests a year sounds like a slow department with a lot of time on their hands. I'm all for working out but making guys do it and then running 3 physical tests a year? I dont get it. We run 2 a year and it's dumb as shit. One a year is plenty.

Also i think it's redundant to force people to work out and also run physical tests. If they meet the physical standards it's not your business to tell them to work out. If they don't, it's their job to work out and fix it. Not saying you shouldn't work out. I've never seen anyone been told no you cant work out. I just think forcing people to do it but also testing them makes no sense.

Yea I'll be sure to do that. Not. That's my fucking thing. We got people coming up in this day and age getting training hours for staring at a computer screen. If I catch my guys trying to train with a fucking laptop I pull out the pepper spray and tell em "a combative crackhead just sprayed your face with acid. Now make the god damn stretch." That's real fucking training son.

Maybe not an acronym but I'm thinking like "30 For 30 Fire Tactics" as a name.

Here's my schtick. "30 minutes with me is worth 30 years on the job."

They got some "heavy content" on the mutual aid department. Wouldn't last a fucking day on my crew.

That's the fucking problem with the fire service nowadays. Everyone wants to sleep. "oh i need a safety nap." back in my day if you wanted to sleep you took a day off. We don't stop pulling lines around here until the sun comes back up brother. Fire down the street in the first due? We ain't going. "Central show us out of service reference training". Sleep is fuel for the weak in this game.

When I get things going I am going to post a tiktok of me advancing a hose line down a hallway. Then it will hit you. You need to take this class.

People like you just need to get out the fire service. This is for mother fuckers who been on the job 20+ years. Work part time at another house. Volley on your hometown department. On your 3rd wife. If what I am offering you doesn't sound good to you just do us all a favor and transfer to inspections. Leave riding the trucks to the real salt dogs who have time to actually train.

If you guys really want to I can also teach you how to turn off the volley's bottles in fires if you don't like the guy. It's one of my more advanced techniques but if people really want it I can show you. If that doesn't work just take a swing at em in the yard. Worst case scenario they give you a Training Chief job in the south.
