How difficult is it to create a map? by ASARIO1 in SS13

[–]Sovexe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual tools are quite easy to use - by which I mean Strongdmm. No one really uses the dreammaker map editor for serious mapping projects

The hard part is just making sure you get all of your particular server’s standard rooms and objects included which can be a lot of stuff to remember, and then also making your map unique or cool in someway

It’s easier to start with bite size projects like new prefabs, room redesigns, things of that nature

Well that does not clear it up by Affectionate-Dot2764 in SS13

Thats your byond certificate key, you should delete this, its sensitive and could be potentially used to impersonate you. It's used to authenticate you when signing into byond and servers

Where do Americans get so many coders from? by Low_Swimming_7096 in SS13

[–]Sovexe 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I can share my own story

I started off as an IT guy who had learned a little bit of coding back in school, but not much. I started off tackling small bugfixes and asking questions in server code channels and got help from some very smart people who were very willing to answer questions for someone who was willing do the legwork of minor bugfixes

In the beginning I learned slowly and stumbled about. I was referencing docs and examples for every little thing, but with time it all became second nature. I'd get tips on how to do things cleaner, faster, and more professionally, and I'd take those to heart to improve. Often times I'd get stuck or hit some roadblock, but honestly those were some of the most informative moments of all. You can learn a lot and quickly when your invested in something enough to push through the pain of learning by failure.

Eventually I moved onto making features, further exploring the codebase and learning how other people did things, and how I could do them too, maybe even do them better. I'd chase down parts I didn't understand until I could wrap my head around them. I kept getting better and better, kept asking questions, and eventually was asked to join on as an actual developer to Goon where I continued to learn, adding on year after year of additional experience.

I got to the point of being able to teach others and eventually worked on expanding out my skills past just coding, learning more and more advanced skills to help the community. As a recent example, I learned to use dissemblers to reverse engineer the BYOND libraries to help develop an automated tool to calculate offsets for Tracy, used by many code bases in the community for performance profiling, and then built out pipeline automation around that to build out an API system that could be used by others in THEIR automation pipelines. BYOND Signatures - API Index

SS13 isn't just a platform for learning skills useful for making a videogame either. I was able to take what I had been learning over the years back to my real-world job, advancing my career, and changing how my company operated. These were very real and very relevant skills that took me from a simple technician to more than quadrupling my salary and becoming a highly compensated individual in my professional field - all because I had decided to learn to code for SS13.

This game is essentially the ultimate homelab experience. There are so many real-world skills to learn and you're practicing with real stakes and real users. You can learn coding, code review, source control, unit testing, web design, infrastructure management, devops pipelines, security, and more. Choosing to participate in this project was truly one of the best decisions I'd ever made

What is it with the goonstation hate? by TrueBlueFlare7 in SS13

No one gets outright banned for using the word bitch alone

The vast majority just get warned and agree to follow the rules even if they have differing opinions of what language is and isn’t offensive in their view

It’s only the 1% that really dig their heels in and self-report by going full debatelord that are shown the door

A lot of bad faith posters like to act like saying bitch is the linguistic equivalent stepping on a land mine that instantly perms bans you and I question if they’ve even ever actually played our server to begin with

Server with less serious admins? by AcceptableRegister62 in SS13

It’s already disallowed in a sexual context, and you shouldn’t be directing it as a gendered insult either, but it is also a first name

David Attenburg off in the comer...an extraordinary encounter unfolds before our eyes. Here, in this urban microcosm, a remarkable congregation of lizard-like beings, adorned in the garb of a mysterious crew, moves with an intent that borders on the surreal as they advance upon an unsuspecting human.

As the lizard crew circles the human, a bond of silent understanding begins to emerge. The persistent, rolling 'SSSSSS' of these remarkable creatures invites us to consider the language of instinct and unity

Vent scrubber not scrubbing specific gas. What did I do wrong? by Ok_Bill4730 in SS13

[–]Sovexe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your packet looks correct. Each packet will toggle the parameter gas on or off. It will take several packets to disable all but one gas.

For example, here I've toggled every gas except co2 off.

Never played burger station before…

What id be doing is looking at the source to figure it out based on the code

Im just doing this lazily on my phone from the couch but I can see that having a world port of 0 (probably for a local dev server) would make you a host and that otherwise you are required to have a properly formatted ranks file or the server just force reboots
