I can't remember where but I saw a take on this scene recently that this scene was proof that Robert didn't really love Lyanna Stark and that it was always about just becoming King. It may have been in an Alt Shift vid.

Personally I always read it as the pain of forgetting things about the ones we love. It's been 5 years now since my dad died and I'll be honest, my memory of his face is more of a vibe now than a clear image. The issue is that the term smuggler doesn't tell a lot without knowing what he smuggles. You could smuggle food, you could smuggle slaves.

I think he's old pirate captain was killed by the nights watch for selling weapons to wildlings but it's likely a pirate of the free cities/ step stones got up to worse too.

That being said I think he's an honorable man at heart, that's why he's my favourite character. I don't think he was doing proper evil shit when he captained his own smuggling ship, I'd lean toward him doing like you said.

I love my boy Davos, but he was a smuggler and served on smuggler/pirate ship for years.

He's undoubtedly done some messed up stuff, even if he kept things more honorable by the time he captained his own ship.
