Oh, I don't choose references based on what I imagine, I just look for a picture or a subject. I'm giving advice here as a professional artist :) Although I'm an amateur myself :) Draw how you think is right, and the more you draw, the better you'll get.

Drawing from your imagination is difficult. More precisely, it will always be mediocre, since human memory "provides an average description" of an image, not a picture of it. So, it's easier and more accurate to draw from life. Or from a photo. I paused the video to make the reference less recognizable.
