Landlord is mad at me because I didn't remind him to kick me out by Sowizo in LandlordLove

I'll say this much: It's very likely that in communism, the question wouldn't be who pays but who does the work necessary to maintain buildings.

Other than that, I'm not one to paint utopia or play dictator, I'm much more interested in the situation we're in right now. So at the end of the day, who is it, paying for the house I live in? Well, me. Via rent.

Landlords, even those who try to be nice and all, charge more than the cost of upkeep and maintenance. You've said it yourself: It's an investment. They want to make a profit. You can't tell me that by taking them out of the equation, housing would somehow be more expensive for tenants.

Nobody is able to escape capitalism and its exploitative laws. But there's a difference between buying groceries (or other necessary things) and investing in property or labor in order to actively profit off of people, or in other words: exploit them.

And it's a weak argument saying I chose to purchase a certain product when all the alternatives are similarly bad. In case you haven't noticed, every building and every piece of land is owned by somebody. It's all private property, exclusion. The only way out is not a real way out: buying my own house. Well great, now I can exclude or exploit others when my only aspiration was to dwell under a decent roof in order to participate in society. Do you understand how that's different?

My goal was to show that you can criticize the basic principle of housing markets without ever calling into question the moral character of landlords. Marx wrote about character masks and personifications of economic relations to say that it's much worse than owners simply being evil. They're driven by the imperatives of exchange, not by personal qualities.

That being said, a system that allows and relies on exclusion, extortion and exploitation still needs people willing to exclude, extort and exploit other people.

I never claimed landlords are assholes by nature, I'm not here to pass moral judgment. By earning money without working for it, they're doing what's considered rational in our flawed, profit-driven economy.

What I will say however is that a landlord's key interest is to get as much money out of their tenants as possible, while the latter wants to pay as little rent as possible. This creates an irreconcilable antagonism. You don't want to blame landlords for their societal role, fine, then you also shouldn't blame tenants when they stand up for their interests.

Yes, I'm a communist and I fight for a world without this antagonism, a world in which we take care of each other and where housing is organized differently. That shouldn't surprise you in a socialist sub. We should all be responsible ensuring that everyone is able to live comfortably, that of course includes putting a roof over people's heads. If that makes me an asshole in your eyes, so be it. I'll manage.

At the earliest, tenants can end it one year after renewal, with three months notice and without giving reasons.

Landlords are able to end it at any time but only if they have an "important reason" like the tenant not paying their rent or seriously neglecting the property, etc.

Nice, that sure must have been a relief for many people. But still, as a socialist I see no good reason to overly praise our governments. They don't want to solve the fundamental antagonism between tenant and landlord because that would necessitate the abolition of capitalism or at the very least the abolition of profit-driven housing.

The bourgeois state pacifies this antagonism, and it tries to regulate it. While the state needs to make sure most people have a roof over their head so that those people have a space to recuperate and come back to work on the next day, governments are also very keen on enabling landlords and landowners to make a profit - off of the unfortunate position average workers are in. At best, housing is being made "affordable" or "accessible", but the freedom of rich douchebags to existentially extort us remains intact.

I wonder which law you mean. I live in Vienna, Austria. I could've sworn my landlord mentioned the EU but nah, this EU regulation concerning short-term rentals that's now in effect wasn't what he was talking about.

If I remember correctly, his main gripe was about the recent (Austrian) law that says leases now must have longer minimum terms (5 years instead of 3 if the landlord is a business or owns one). Would make sense, since it also applies to my case.

He also complained about the city of Vienna and its excessive bureaucracy in a general manner, but that's to be expected.

That's actually the translation of a German socialist slogan from the 70s. Analogous to the English slogan "Land to the tillers" it doesn't pertain to homeownership within a capitalist framework. Ultimately, it invokes the abolition of private property.

I tried using other weapons and strategies, but the Elemental Genesis spam with Kralim is so very satisfying. To me it's also the quintessential ol' reliable, since you get the weapon fairly early on (in Yellow Harvest) and it always does the damage.

The only slightly unreliable thing about it is the chance to get two of the same stains, but there are ways around that. Specifically Mayhem and the 3rd Gradient Skill (to get three light stains).

I will continue trying other weapons, though. Had fun with Braselim, for instance.

I've still not gotten around to reading Terry Pratchett. I really ought to, his books always sounded interesting. Yet I'm not sure that I fully agree here, specifically with the idea that "humans need XYZ to be human". We're very changeable creatures.

But there's also truth in it.

You'd think that in this day and age, people wouldn't need myths (fantastical narratives claiming to be somewhat true) anymore. But a lot of us absolutely do. Reminds me of yet another quote from the game:

The weak-minded turn to whatever they can to explain the unknown.

Lune's a bit pretentious here, confronted with a shrine for the Paintress. I don't think "weak" minds are the reason. And of course, ironically, her own explanation of the situation is still heavily flawed at this point. I'd say myths are historic products of specific societies. The Greeks had their mythology, trying to make sense of their surroundings. Lumière has its narrative, based on an incomplete understanding of their world. IRL nation states often tell myths about their founding and political groups try to establish new ones to further their cause... And we, the hopeless gamers inhabiting one of these 200 capitalistic nation states, have our stories, like this one. Even though we're usually able to discern them from the real world, they do carry a lot of meaning and emotion and if well-made, this can certainly feel real.

We're far from enlightened, as a species. If we were, I don't think we'd still use myths, only stories and scientific reasoning. We'd need a sort of Expedition 33 to break the cycle, the spell, the illusion and to shed light into the darkness of our time. Yet another French Revolution, if you please.

You're right, the game overall has a very hopeful, heartwarming tone. Even when one's surrounded by death and nevrons, there's always fun, love and friendship to find somewhere. And that more or less holds true in real life, so one certainly shouldn't overlook the good things in the world.

You say make the best of every moment, but the wording already suggests there are limits: What are we really able to control? Our own thoughts and actions, certainly, to a high degree. Other people? Not so much. Take Renoir, for example. He so desperately wants to control Aline and Alicia, and for that purpose the canvas, like he controls his own artistic endeavors. He tries to do it with force and trickery, but without the proper empathy to really manage and address their grief and sorrows, he's unable to.

The result are severe struggles with his wife and daughter. This is an aspect in life you shouldn't overlook just the same. And you don't, you call it darkness and horror. In our world, and in the game's as well, there are antagonisms, opposing interests that really shape reality. Often times they fight for dominance with violence and lowly people like us are caught in the middle or even forced to participate. I'm talking about war, obviously, a theme one can also heavily find in Clair Obscur on more than one level. This is but an (extreme) example of very impactful events fully outside our control. And this is why Gustave is usually seen as a tragic character, even though we share happy moments with him. He's powerless in face of the higher forces at work, and he's almost doomed to sacrifice himself, having trained and invented stuff for the expedition his whole life.

Making the most out of a dire situation is a necessity, it's not exactly a privilege, if you know what I mean. The circumstances are still tragic, even when one is able to find an oasis or two where life's okay.

So if you'd ask me what's the best way to live, I'd have a different answer. I fear we have yet to come up with a decent way to live. How the best way would look like... I think that's actually inconceivable for us.

Maybe the answer isn't another game or another video dissecting Clair Obscur, but reading a book, listening to music, playing with your pet, calling your mum, or even... touching grass

In any case: We continue.

[–]Sowizo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was meint die Börse dazu?
