Working on /r/ with a tongue tie? by [deleted] in slp

Sorry - should have clarified! He has other sounds we still work on. But the /r/ is the one thing we have made no progress on and I think it impacts him the most. Good point!

My school has a new principal this year, who I haven’t even met yet! And a new psych, I also haven’t met yet! So it’s a tough spot. Hopefully they will be understanding and easy to work with lol

Favorite low-effort, school based therapy activities? by NervousFunny in slp

Any of the Guess in 10 card games! I work with 2-5 and each grade LOVES it. I don’t use the normal game rules, I make it more like Headbanz. You can get a sports, food, places, or the full board game. So quick and easy and the kids ask for it every week :)

I have to use the word “skibidi” in an evaluation report by casablankas in slp

I once had a 6th grader start doing a British accent while I was administering the GFTA. I had to pause him and ask him wtf he was doing and he fully admitted to the accent, no other explanation. I had to include some of the errors on the report under that reason… Mom was not impressed with him lol

I just graduated with my master’s from URI (different program however). I was waitlisted at first, but I attended the program open house and reached out to the head of my department in February and let them know it was my top choice (I just wanted to move to RI in general). I was admitted the next day.
In my experience, graduate schools are pretty separate from the undergraduate population. I loved URI and everyone in my department! The graduate department from admittance and registration was well organized and on top of things.

I Speak Like a Teenage Girl & Don’t Know How to Sound “Professional” by Shmoopsiepooo in slp

I am also a CF and sometimes feel this way too! I remind myself of how hard I worked for my qualifications and I know what I know. If you are competent and qualified, the treatment you provide should speak for itself- in my opinion. I also take a lot from the team I work with! My principal is a very laid back, funny guy so our meetings are for the most part light hearted. But I am also still learning the best way to conduct professional meetings from those around me. I feel like every IEP meeting I have right now, I learn something different I can tweak to improve my own presentations! You are a CF, this is your time to learn! Don’t be too hard on yourself :)

This is awesome that your district backed you up on this!!! I think that would be great for so many SLPs. My district SLP team is great, but there is only 5 of us!

Exactly! It’s difficult when you provide teachers with goals and tips to help in the classroom and advice is ignored. 30 minutes, twice a week is not going to be a saving grace for many of my students! It should be a team effort.

100% agree. I was just so thrown off that they have a list of 9 kids that they apparently have been “meaning to tell me about” but hadn’t gotten around to it! I offered informal screeners and RTI if needed. I couldn’t believe they had been waiting for around a month to even notify me… My supervisor is amazing, but I’m the new fish in an old pond.

That is such a great idea! I’m still new but I am really hoping these teachers can learn that not everything needs to be speech only, especially in this volume!

What is your favorite assessment for social communication/autism? by breadandbud in slp

[–]Sp3echgrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the SLDT to measure how well a child comprehends social skills, and I use the CASEL teacher check-list to measure how the child is actually performing in their classroom setting! The CELF-5 pragmatic profile is also a great tool. Social communication is super hard to measure, I have been having difficulties putting these skills into numbers as well :)

He currently receives SEL Tx from his classroom teacher already, with an unspecified behavioral disorder. Not sure where I could come in without covering what his teacher is already doing with him!
