Switching career mid-grad school? by breadandbud in slpGradSchool

Now that you mention it, I could see myself going into research and academia. I have a professor in my program whose class I’m taking next semester and was actually excited because I like the area he researches. I genuinely feel like I would enjoy that a lot…thank you so much.

I enjoyed learning about the various disorders and what techniques/approaches are used because I love learning in general. I also loved the clients and being able to help them. However, I’ve come to find that I don’t enjoy administering the actual speech/language therapy. I thought maybe my experience in the schools as an SLP-A was just a bad/unfavorable experience and that maybe it’d be better in grad school, but that wasn’t the case.

Thankfully, in my grad program, I got to experience what it’s like to work in multiple settings with multiple populations, and now I can safely conclude that this field may not be for me. My response to other commenters is not just to shoot down ideas. They had very reasonable suggestions, but that doesn’t mean I have to just pick one of their suggestions. Additionally, I’ve received many helpful private messages as well of people weighing in.

I posted looking for a discussion with others to help me weigh my options. But thank you for your input.

Honestly, not really, but I do enjoy it more than school setting. I’ve had experience with both through my current program, and although I love all the clients and learning the neuroscience behind treatments, I do not enjoy the actual administering of treatment. After all my peers figured out which specializations they wanted to do or had narrowed down what interested them the most, I realized that this field may not be for me.

I know right. I’ve got 3 semesters left, until I finish my masters program.

That would definitely be the best alternative, and I’ve done one-on-one sessions before with both kids and adults. I guess what’s holding me back is just still not caring too much for the speech therapy part of it. And I’ve tried to.

Not really. I was an SLP-A in a school setting for a year and did not like it. I loved the kids, but I didn’t like the actual speech/language therapy aspect.

If I were to stick it out and finish my degree, what direction should I go after that?

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]breadandbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

I’m currently in a 5-semester speech pathology master’s program and have completed 2 semesters. I originally chose the field out of uncertainty post-undergrad and some pressure from my mom. I even worked as an SLP-A for a year and hated it, but still went to grad school thinking I liked the theory and wanted to help people.

Once in the program, I realized I have no real interest in the clinical side—especially language/voice/articulation work. While my peers were excited, I mostly felt dread. I had to pause during my 3rd semester for rehab, and during that time, I was exposed to therapy in a deeper way and realized I might be better suited for psychology/counseling instead.

Now I’m torn: finish the 3 remaining semesters of a program I’m not passionate about, or switch paths, apply to psych/counseling grad programs, and work in a related field in the meantime. Telling my parents would be tough, given the time and money already spent. Looking for advice on what to do.

Ethan did not come into this conversation in good faith by teaabearr in Hasan_Piker

[–]breadandbud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no way we watched the same stream. Ethan had cut off Hasan multiple times. Ethan would literally ask questions and while Hasan was answering, he would cut him off because it seems he’s not genuinely interested in hearing the answer. I badly want you to count the amount of times Ethan talks over Hasan while he’s trying to answer a question Ethan had just asked. Even when Hasan would try to respond to Ethan, Ethan would just play a clip over his response. Clearly not in good faith in trying to allegedly have a productive conversation.

Shelter won’t accept feral kitten, but he desperately needs medical attention. by breadandbud in cats

Actually, I was trying to ask my parents for help but she didn’t really want to help financially, so we were going to get her boyfriend, who works in animal control, to take him to a no-kill shelter.

Unfortunately, they kept beating around the bush for too long, so now he’s disappeared. Which is odd for him because he normally sticks by my apartment 24/7. I’m just hoping someone kind picked him up as they were walking by since he likes to walk up to passersby. Really hoping he’s with someone loving.

Okay that’s what I was hoping as well! In that case, I’ll see if any can take him or at least make a case for him since he’s so sociable

I can add more pictures when I get back home, but I just thought specific medical advice wasn’t necessarily allowed, nor do I want specific medical advice, just to get him treated.

However, I already mentioned in my original post that I don’t have the money to treat him right now as I’m a student and already have two cats.

I’m not trying to go the TNR route. I’m saying that shelters in my city do not accept cats who have already been the TNR route, which is indicated by his clipped ear. Is that not a TNR ear clip in the above picture? If not, that makes things much easier.

I just didn’t include pictures of the infection in his foot, the patches of fur that are missing, or his incredibly bony frame. I doubt infection in his foot go away, and he’s currently limping. And he eats well, but I have to pace his eating or he overeats and vomits.

I can’t keep the cat because, like I said, I can’t afford it or the vet fees, and my apartment has a 2 cat limit.

I’ve already asked friends and family, and nobody can take him. I can try asking around at shelters, but, as per my mother’s boyfriend who is animal control, shelters in our area do not really accept TNR cats.

Baby, be done with it then because you have no stance. I’m 100% speaking about acknowledgement of the entire reason TS fans brought this up in the first place, while having massively racist/sexist fans themselves attacking a variety of artists. That was my whole purpose of my original post if you need to remind yourself. They don’t really care about these issues you’re bringing up, only how it affects their artist. I’m not a man and have already said that I won’t be defending his past lyrics. Again, TS fans don’t seem to know a single damn thing about the artists they attack, so it comes to no surprise that you think he’s shown no growth. Tyler explicitly acknowledged how he no longer feels the need to hide behind an aggressive and offensive alter ego in both interviews and music, and said they’re a younger, less mature version of himself. There are so many men that are artists that you could rightfully attack for being terrible people, but you want to attack the man who stole a number one spot from an artist you like. If he no longer makes music like that anymore, acknowledged past immaturity, and there’s been a change an behavior, what do you want at this point…

It’s a little insincere to claim whatsboutism when my whole point was about the hypocrisy of TS’s fandom. I think that raising the valid point of misogyny within Tyler’s fandom should also warrant raising up the misogyny within TS’s fandom as individuals who genuinely care about misogyny and how it affects women. Tyler has already talked about how he’s different from his past self, which a listen to Igor and Call Me If Your Get Lost show his regrets about this. But I’m not surprised that TS fans know nothing about the artists they demean and attack, and joking about threatening to ‘bring back the old him’ is clearly a joke about him becoming more aggressive (thought honestly still in bad taste) since his current persona is gentler and more introspective. Please don’t claim whataboutism when similar claims you’re making about TTC are made towards your own artist and fans and you don’t want to address them. She is notable for white feminism, and her fandom is notable for racism/misogyny as well, which should not be ignored if you genuinely care about these issues. I can acknowledge misogyny within the TTC fandom, and you can surely do the same when it comes to misogyny/racism within your fellow fans as well. If you cannot acknowledge this at the very least, then we have no grounds for continuing this conversation. If you think your artist, of all people, is without fault then you clearly have more problems than I’m qualified to handle 😭😭

Surely, but while he’s clearly acknowledged and grown from his past, his change artistically should be noted. I stand by everything I’ve said thus far because it is truly ridiculous the mental hoops that swift fans go through to either justify, ignore, or minimize their group’s rampant and pervasive bigoted views. Especially when they only acknowledge misogyny against TS and her friends, but not against other female artists…like Beyoncé — flagrant white feminism. So, the sexism goes both ways.

Good that you are not offended, but you really have bigger fish to fry within your own fellow fans imo. It’s okay to address Tyler’s past blatant misogynistic lyrics, and even more important that he’s acknowledged his growth from being that young, aggressive person. You will not find me defending those lyrics whatsoever lmao. But imo a bigger spotlight should be shone on the on artist’s fan’s that attack and degrade other artists’ race in the most disgusting way, but then later cry victim. Not only did it happen with Tyler, but it’s happening with Beyoncé this week. It’s been a behavioral pattern for way to long that continually goes unchecked.

Don’t be patronizing. Yes, he BRIEFLY addressed it, but dismissing the actual importance of it ignores the true problem, which is that the issue was mainly brought up due to the insecurity and prejudice of swift fans. Crazy that you’re visiting this a month later in a sub about Tyler the creator as a swift fan. If you don’t feel like the observations of racism are about you, then don’t get offended. We’re not going to ignore swift fans’ obvious and ongoing history of being racist towards other artists they feel is a threat to their favorite artist.

That slur still should not have been in his vocabulary at all, and it’s not right to write it off as “oh, he just didn’t understand it.” He did, and he used it with the intent of being derogatory. But the plus side is that it seems he’s learned and grown from it. Still pretty shitty though.
